I jumped in too quick and went way over my head. Here is my list of conditions, see if you can match a PJ/screen up with it.

Of course under 3K. I watch standard DVD's. I'm not paying for Blue Ray discs.I watch HD once in a blue moon, but i have the service.

My sound system is killer. I would like all the mains behind the screen, so a woven screen is a must, and I sit 10' away from the screen.

I would like a 100" wide screen...to fit the mains that will be going behind it.

I own a NEC 6PGXTRA/DWIN Transcanner with a draper screen that is 77" wide.

3k for the screen and PJ? How long do you plan to keep this PJ? Is 1080P important to you right now or do you plan on replacing the PJ once (if) you make the jump to HD/BR?

The Epson 1080 is getting good reviews and can be had for under 3k. Play your cards right and you can pick up the Epson 810 Cinema Pro (I have this unit and you are welcome to demo it) with a 2 year 24hr replacement warranty for under 1900 which will leave plenty for a screen...of course if you are looking for an AT screen then I think you will be spending more on the screen than on the PJ (assuming your budget is 3k total).

If you need an AT screen I would recommend you check out these...

Plenty of DIY'ers have used this material. Unfortunately I think you have to buy the material and frame now as his business model has changed.

Seems like your list of conditions is only that it be under 3k and the screen should be 100" wide. Are you looking for an LCD or a DLP? Bothered by rainbows?

There are lots of 720p units to choose from right now. Give a little more info as to what your expectations are and it might be easier.

Many/most standard DVD's look poor to terrible when projected to a large size. Standard definition material (broadcast and DVD) is inferior and it is a waste of money to get a new PJ if your not going to go HD.

Most folks here have abandoned or severly reduced their consumption of nasty SD.

SD at 100" will cause psychosis.

Well I beg to differ. I watch HD-DVDs and DVDs and like both.. But then again I don't see a huge difference in PQ with alot of movies with HD-DVD.. Bad transfer of course but there's alot of times on DVD that I think it looks damn good for only being 480P.. I have an HD70 at 102"... What about people who have or did have a 480P projector?

Waste of money, not hardly.. Maybe you have a bad DVD player or something isn't working properly..

I couldn't disagree more about the standard DVDs.
I don't watch very much sd tv on my projector, but my DVD collection looks great.

Hey P. Lincoln,
Good point on the transition.I think that i'm at the point where I would like to make this a two step move.I'm not ready for BR/HDDVD/HD.

I like my usual SD DVD's.Seems to be pointing toward a 720p PJ and a AT screen (audio transparent...I think).

My big concern is getting the sound correct.By correct I mean behind the screen for my mains.Picture quality is important, but not at the cost i'm seeing.

I'll look into a DIY AT screen and give your PJ a look when my stupid summer schedule slows down.Thanx for the invite.

This is where the forum is it's best, running idea's by you guys really helps.

SMX screen material is still available for a short period of time. I suggest you place an order soon before you are forced to buy a complete screen which will be $$$'s. I placed and order a couple weeks ago, but still waiting for a shipment.

Another alternative are these guys who have a very similar material for much cheaper, I believe there is a difference in the weave and possibly a slightly different color. I think I read somewhere that the audio is better on the SMX

http://www.seymourav.com/

There are many satisfied customers with the SMX, I have only seen 1 or 2 comments on the other material, but so far they have been positive responses.

Thanx for the feedback.I have HD through my NEC and while it looks great,I don't use my videoroom for TV. This has become a DVD only room.it just turned out that way. Most TV watching is in the livingroom on a non-HD monitor. When we go into the video room it's to view a movie.

I can see your point on wanting the best video image and on how bad SD looks blown up.I guess the best i can do is keep posting and get over to some houses to see what these PJ look like.

I beginning to see that my priority with respect to this upgrade is to get a AT screen and get the monitors to sound right behind the screen. I think I'm off to the DIY screen section.....thanx guys.

if you pick up the SMX material and go with a 720P projector you should have no trouble coming in at under 3k.

Mullen and I demoed HD-DVD on my 720 display and it still looked great so I wouldn't make 1080P a priority either. 1080 is nice, but not a must

Patrick,
Thanx for all the lessons ! Well, it looks like it's a 720p PJ with my new SMX screen material that I ordered.

This is going to be so cool
