View Full Version : Second most ridiculous sub question ever

I'm not so sure this is as bad as the pc sub question but it is close: what do I do with two subs? I know, I know, sell one but I'd rather use both if there is a good way to do it.

My original sub is the old SW Fifteen by Audio Source that I have had for many years. It is 200 watts with a 15" driver, 20hz-250hz. It worked very well but I was starting to sense some rumble, even after I replaced the amp. I got rid of it (somewhat) by placing a box of ceramic tile on the top and putting some filler in the cabinet behind the speaker. Anyway, I wanted a smaller, more efficient sub.

So, I decided to get a smaller sub and found a good deal I could not pass up on the BIC v1020, 160 watt 10". I hooked them up with the same basic configuration next to each other using my dedicated sub out line. The SW Fifteen does not have a dedicated line in so I use a pigtail Y to make the connection. The BIC could not even come close to duplicating the bass of the SW during any of my A/B tests. The SW is a side thrower, the BIC shoots downward.

I know the SW is much bigger and more powerful than the BIC but I mean there was virtually NO presence from the BIC in comparison. The foot stomps in one of those more modern Godzilla movies made the room shake with the SW whereas the BIC displayed nothing but "mush", even with the volume way up. In the submarine war movie "U571", there is a great bass scene when a series of the depth chargers go off. The SW defined the blasts like New York City's Fourth of July fireworks display while the BIC made the depth chargers sound like a kid's firecracker.

My main speakers are the old Cambridge Soundworks sat system with two separate bass modules, the Cambridge center channel speaker and two surround speakers. I have everything set up to "small" with the amp filter set to 100. The subs are set to about 90 and are located near a wall behind a sofa. Everything comes out as 5.1 Dolby Pro Logic as I have a dated amp.

I don't know, maybe the BIC just is not a decent subwoofer but the reviews have been good and it is a time tested sub in the HSU mold (some say it is in fact an HSU). In any event, I was wondering, is there a way to connect both some how and if so, how are the connections made? Would I reap any benefit? Should they be placed in the same spot or different areas? My fear is that the SW would blow away the BIC if used together and make the BIC virtually invisible and useless. Even at the SW's low setting and the BIC's high volume setting, I think the BIC would be overwhelmed.

you got the wrong BIC. The one talked about around here is the H-100. Designed with the help of Dr. Hsu but not an HSU sub. Any way you can return the one you just got?

Yea, I probably can send it back and probably will. Unless I can find a use for it in some audio installation. I think I'll play around with it and see what I come up with. I did not know the H-100 was the best one - guess I should have read a little more. Thanks for the response.

The H-100 is way above the class of othe bic subs. If you can get your money back I'd advise doing that. Using two subs isn't going to help the quality of bass your getting from either sub. It will help with room nulls and give a little more ouput but unless you're using two quality subs to start with it's a waste of time, money and effort.

milacqua: i am using the driver from an SW15 in a different enclosure. could you possibly get me the dimensions of the original enclosure, along with the tube length and diameter. then i could more accurately tune the box i am using.

thanx!, and now back to your regularly scheduled thread.

As you know, this is a dual firing sub and each port is 5" long with 3" openings. The original enclosure has the following dimensions: 21.5 H x 16" W x 19" D and weighs 68 lbs. The driver itself is, as the name suggests, is 15".

Well, after further playing around I was able to extract a little better response from the BIC but still nowhere near the SW Fifteen. I should have expected this, however, if one only looks at the specifications of both. Even though the SW is old, the dimensions noted above show it to be a big, robust sub whereas the BIC is a lightweight in comparison. I might just have to send it back.

thanx for the info! i got the driver for 25 bux delivered several years ago. i had heard good things about the sw15 as an entry-level sub, so for that kind of money i went for it. "they" also say it should have more fiberfill in it to cut down on the mid-bass peak. you might want to try that.

anyway, thanx for the numbers. now i can compare what i have to what it should be.

Yes, that is exactly what I did with my SW 15. As you will note in my op, I put some filler in the enclosure behind the driver and around the interior of the cabinet. That has helped the rumble problem and "tighten" the bass output. I also put a box of heavy tiles on top of it which help a bit as well.

when i got my sw15 driver i removed a 12" philips driver from its box (36x16x22 inches, with a 4-1/2" square x 12" long port), cut the baffle to fit the 15 incher, and added a parts express 250-watt sub amp to the back. the philips driver ended up in an 8 foot long box built into the floor joists under the center of the room, powered by an old jvc receiver (100 watts). nice thumpage for zero cost! ;)

i guess i need to model both the sw15 original box and the "new" box it's in, and then do a freq plot of the room. in the meantime, it sounds wonderful. action movies are great! master and commander is the best, with those cannon shots shaking the house :)
