View Full Version : Which sub for an Onkyo HT-S605 or Yamaha V661, ~$100-$300 budget

So I'm either getting a Onkyo HT-S605 or a Yamaha V661 to replace my HTIB onkyo, which only had HDMI passthrough. I'm leaning towards just getting a very solid 2.1 setup now, and buying the other channels as I can afford it, as I'd rather have a good 2.1 setup to build on, than a subpar 5.1 or 7.1 now.

So I need a sub...

Looking to spend ~$100-$300, maybe more if there was a real good reason to.

#1. I don't need or want something that's going to blow down the walls, I live in an apartment complex, and I can't be keeping people up at night.

#2. Keep in mind the Onkyo HT-S605 OR Yamaha V661 has to be able to drive it.

#3. Quality sound reproduction is more important than volume, I like to feel the rumble, but again, don't want to knock the walls down.

I'll be purchasing this weekend.

My main use for this will be movies (playing on the PS3 hooked through HDMI), with some music.

Eventually this sub will be part of a 7.1 setup for watching blu-rays on the PS3.

#1 Anything you get quality or not will probably have the capability of keeping your neighbors up at night but when setup properly it'll be less of an issue. That's what the volume control is for. Placing the sub close to your sitting position helps, that way the sub doesn't have to output as much.

#2 Any receiver will be capable of driving it. The amp is in the subwoofer not the receiver. The receiver just sends the signal to the subwoofer.

#3 for low end extension and imo the best choice at just above your budget check out the ED A2-300. Price includes shipping so actually it's right at your budget.

My second choice (if your placing it near your seating position) is the X-Sub from av123 very clean and accurate. It doesn't have quite as much low end extension or output as the A2-300 due to it's smaller 8" driver and enclosure but for your requirements especially placed close to the seating position it's a great choice.

Third would be the Bic H-100. Especially if you can't place it close to the seating position. It'll give you a little more low end extension and output than the X-Sub at basically the same price.

Check ebay for the authorized seller. You can do a lookup for the H-100 or I think the sellers name is acousticsoundesign.
