View Full Version : Need help deciding on budget subwoofer...
aztecnero 07-20-07, 10:54 PM I have it narrowed down to two subs that cost less than 100 dollars. I only want to choose one and it will be plugged into a low end Onkyo receiver. Which one is better? Yamaha YST-SW216BL or Sony SA-W2500 Thanks for the help in advance guys.
mailiang 07-21-07, 12:36 AM Stay away from Sony, it ain't the one and only. ;)
Ian :D
Andyisc00l 07-21-07, 02:21 AM I'd say don't waste your money. Wait until you have at least $250-300. You can buy a Velodyne on Ebay for that price. I'd really look in to a Velodyne DLS-4000R which is fantastic.
Or you could check out www.**********... check out their X-Sub. It's $200 and everyone likes it. I personally would never buy a 8" sub..doesn't hit low enough.
Jakeman02 07-21-07, 02:31 AM Agreed. save your money untill you at least hit the $200 price point. Anything below that and you'll be throwing good money after bad trying to get where you should have started from.
You may want to look into the VELODYNE VX-10C at your local Fry's Electronics if you have one. If you're lucky, you may catch it on sale for $150. It's actually a decent subwoofer for under $200.
aztecnero 07-21-07, 02:54 AM The yamaha is a 10 inch sub. So you guys recommend going without a sub until I can hit the 200 dollar price point?
Buckeye911 07-21-07, 02:58 AM I just picked up a wonderful Klipsch KSW10 on ebay last week for $163.
I would recommend going without a sub until the $350 sub range. The difference between $250 and $350 is large and immensely satisfying. Once you're at close to a $1000, you really can't get much better bass without spending close to 2x more.
Andyisc00l 07-21-07, 03:10 AM Not sure if you are new to home audio. From the sounds of it you are. There is a rule of thumb with people who are new. They think they want something kinda cheap, then they buy something kinda cheap, then they figure out it sounds pretty good but they want more. Be smart and save up a little..even still you'll probably get the upgrade bug soon after. :-) $200 is a minimum...personally, I'd say spend at least $500+, but from the sounds of it you want something kinda cheap. I'd say shoot for buying the DLS-4000R. If you look around you can find it for around $300-350..it is a $600 subwoofer. Actually I'd say get a DLS-5000R...3 times as much power and a 15" driver. You can find it for $450 in the right spots, people always say they spent $450 online somewhere. That is a $1000 sub.

yea, you nailed it...although it looks like the times are a changing. :)
Hey..actually this guy, Spezzy, he has a DLS-5000R that he wants to sell. Ask $450 including shipping :-).
aztecnero 07-21-07, 03:15 AM Yeah I am totally new at this. I am upgrading from a HTIB and I am just getting started. Thanks for the help.

Yeah, I'm willing.
$450 is fine. Might have to wait a bit however. I'm waiting on final design decisions for my sub from Mr. Seaton.
Jeremy112 07-21-07, 08:42 AM The best thing I got out of my old HTiB was the subwoofer, but when you pay $1,100 for a HTiB you better get something good!!
Id try a HSU Subwoofer if your new to HT, For my first subwoofer, the HSU STF-2 was quite astonishing! And its not expensive either. It filled my 14'x16'x8' HT room with bass, thats for sure!
mailiang 07-21-07, 12:12 PM What size room do you have? Room volume is a very big factor when it comes to performance and is a major consideration when it comes to your budget. If you let us know what your dimensions are, we can provide more specific recommendations.

aztecnero 07-21-07, 12:43 PM The room is 16x12x8. Thanks for the help.
I believe the standard set of sub-$500 recommendations here go something like this (price new & shipped):
Rocket X-sub ($240)
Bic H-100 ($240)
Elemental designs A2-250 ($300)
Elemental designs A2-300 ($350)
Elemental designs A3-300 ($400)
Hsu VTF-1 ($430)
SVS Audio PB10-NSD ($470)
I may be a little off with the street pricing, but I think I'm in the right ballpark. Did I miss anything?
IMO, there's a really noticeable (even to lay people) and dramatic drop off under $250 in sub quality; as you go up from there, you're still getting better subs, but the cheaper sub won't be bad enough to sound bad (to a lay person) without something else to compare it to. If you go with used equipment, of course, that opens up a whole new set of possible purchases.

What about the infinity PS212 you can get it on ebay new for 350.00. 400watts rms and 700peak power.
Theo-Prof 07-21-07, 02:11 PM My Local Fry's has the PSW-10 on sale for $99. I do not know a lot about this sub, but for that kind of money, I think it would beat the Sony and Yamaha. I might pick one of these up myself. What are your thoughts on this sub?
art vandalay 07-21-07, 04:31 PM Seems like the bic H-100 might be a good starter sub for you. Around here ive only seen positive things about it regarding the price-performance ratio. If your willing to wait longer to get more cash together, i dont think you could go wrong with HSU or SVS.
mailiang 07-21-07, 06:28 PM Any of the subs mentioned thus far will provide more then enough output in your room. The more expensive ones ($300.00+) will give you better extension below 25hz or so. Good luck!

Vedder323 07-21-07, 11:56 PM another vote for the X sub @199, great deal
Sony SA-W2500 is damn fine for 80 bucks. My HT on a budget has impressed many of my "better off" HT buddies.
42"Maxent Plasma
PS3
360 w/add-on
Onkyo TX-SR601
Bose Bookshelf Pair
2.1 Til I can afford 5.1

First thanks for bringing back the dead and 2, your buddies while better off may not have better stuff..
lalakersfan34 09-29-07, 01:24 AM I agree with bori. The Infinity PS212 is a pretty good sub (I have it and like it much more than my Velodyne Vx-10 that I had before), and I've seen it online, shipped, for around $265. I don't think you can beat that. It is definitely plenty for a room your size. Just my two cents.
