Need a little help here. I'm upgrading my subs in a 4300 CF room with cathedral ceilings. Music sound quality is higher on my list than spl and slam.
I used to think I needed two subs, but having tried an HGS-12, I realize now that one better sub does way better than two lesser subs and that part of my peaks/nulls problems were actually introduced by the old subs. In some measuring, the response curves bore out what I was hearing and upgraditis has set in and I'm hunting for a sealed servo sub solution because I like the sound.
I'm interested in your thoughts about one vs. 2 subs in this case. The two 12" velodynes have more cone area than a 15 and would have similar frequency response. Would there be a compelling reason to go with one vs. two subs in this case?
Thanks.

IMO, 2 subs are better than 1. You have a much better chance of getting even bass response throughout a room with 2 subs. While you are right, 1 great sub will outperform 2 "ok" subs any day, if you get 2 great 12 inchers you will be a happy camper. I used to own an NHT U2 system, these subs were passive with a sealed design but they sounded awesome despite their diminutive size. I was quite blown away by the advantages of a dual subwoofer system, although space constraints has forced me back to a single subwoofer setup, 2 subs are the way to go. If you're considering getting (2) HGS12's you better look into getting your furniture nailed to floor :). I would put two of those up against almost anything.
Just my .02 ;)

go for two dd18.
i understand that this wasn't your question, but two years ago i began trying to make the same decision as you. my room is only 2300 sq feet. all that i learned didn't help me decide and i ended up ordering two dd18s. just an awesome, fun set up that i can not even imagine being without or upgrading. what would be an upgrade? maybe if velo came out with another dd18 that had high output down to 5 hz i would go for those, but nothing else. if you get the dd18s your low level is set or life!

bumping this thread again....
I now have a single HGS-12 and am looking for another 12. If i get a dd-12, can I use it to help configure the pair in any way? Or is the dd only capable of dealing with it's own EQ? For similar money, I could probably get an HGS-12 and an SMS?
Much as I would love a dd-15, I would only be able to use ONE due to WAF considerations. dd-18 isn't an available option in my house :^)
So, I guess the question is 2x hgs-12 (or HGS12 and dd12) OR a DD-15.

You can definitely use the DD12 to configure itself as well as help second sub at the same time. But you are right, you would ONLY be EQing one sub though, but you would be using the onscreen display to see the effect of changing whatever settings you have available (volume, phase, crossover) on the other sub.
If you bought the SMS/HGS you could EQ both subs at the same time (both share exactly the same EQ settings)
If I could afford the DD15, I'd just get one of those...but that's just me. I just like the idea of one very high quality sub over two lesser subs. The DD15 will just extract more lows from the soundtrack than a smaller 12
just remember the dd-15 goes lower with less distortion as per their specs on the website.

Thanks guys. So with all of this, would the dd-15 end up likely with a smaller "sweet spot" than I might get with the dual 12's?

only your room will know for sure. no good answer on that as each room
alters what dips and peaks it will have hardwood floors carpet drapes
few or many windows one or more doorways.
