Do I need to build a higher projector stand to raise my screen height 10 to 12 inches, or can I use a tilted stand instead. Lower, (tilted) would be better for the coffee table setup I want to use, but I think I may have read that tilting is not a good idea because there would be convergence issues or something. Any thoughts?

Hello
You are OK in that until you run out of projector keystone range or the ability to set good top/bottom focus. You could lean the top of the screen out a little providing it does not sag.

Ah yes, focus. I forgot about that! lol. I was all caught up worrying about keystone. As of now I have a fixed screen, so no tilting is possible. I will just have to set it up and find out for myself if focus is objectionable. I'll report back in later.

A fixedt screen can be easily tilted forward toward you from the top. Try to visualize putting the projector on the floor and aiming it straight up and putting the screen on the ceiling. Same as having the projector level and the screen on the wall. Soes as you rotate the projector up a little you must main parallism and throw distance. While it is easy to tilt the screen forward, with a non zoom lens you would have to move the bottom of the screen away to maintain the throw distance While you couldn't do this because of the wall you could move the projector further a away a smidge and by tilting the top of the screen forward till the trapezoid went away, you would be there.
The PERFECT setup for CRT projector that is able to do it is with the PJ in the center of the screen, (on axis) and the tubes mounted at ZERO deg within the projector.
That give the best possible image available, this is used for rear screen projection otherwise the PJ would be in the way for front projection.
Most PJs have tube mounted around 10-14 deg within them - SO the PJ although FLAT/LEVEL the tubes are already at an angle.
YES you can then angle futher the PJ, there is a reason for the top of the screen to be brought out......Direct reflection from the screen aimed at the prime viewing location.
You do need to be careful if you tilt the screen, as you go UP in screen gain you reduce the best viewing cone angles of the screen - its important to be within these perameters.
SO - screen gain, viewing position, screen tilt, PJ tilt are all related.
This is all based on an "ideal world".
The larger the screen the greater the distance to the screen, the lower the angle the PJ needs to be to raise the picture, the only real way is to try it.
The higher up the range your PJ the better equiped it is for non standard projection. - Better geometry control, Scheimpflug etc.
