View Full Version : Any easy way to adjust "saturation" on 9PG+?
My wife and I have started watching HDTV @1080i via a Starchoice DSR505 satellite receiver. We are seeing a very nice 92"-diagonal, 16x9 image on our older DaLite 4x3 screen.
The problem is that the skin color of "white" people, even on different programs on the same HD channel, is remarkably different. On some shows skin tone is perfect, while on some others everyone looks like they've just stepped off the plane from a 6-month vacation in Cancun. (Well, maybe they have, but I doubt it.)
Unfortunately, there is no "color" or "saturation" adjustment that I can find on our Sat receiver, so we just watch whatever we get, without adjusting anything.
Usually these adjustments are easily accessible in common display devices, and many times also in the source device. For example, in the past I've always used our PIII HTPC's DVD software video controls, but now that option is not available.
Is there any way to easily and quickly make "color" or "saturation" adjustment on a 9PG+?
MikeEby 07-22-07, 02:13 PM Yes there are adjustments they are different then an NTSC set. One quick question… If you can find a black and white movie, playing or your dish does it look truly black and white or does it have a tint? It does not have to be an HD movie but you want to be sure you have selected the RGB input while testing. If it has a tint then there are adjustments that can be made to get your flesh tones closer to lifelike.
Mike
Thanks, Mike.
Many times the flesh tones on a particular program look just fine. But on the very next program everyone might look as if they've been on that long vacation to Cancun.
I'll try to find a b&w movie and report back.

The problem is "probably" in the transmission and not the projector. There is no color adjustments when using an RGBHV feed (however, there is on composite). If your grayscale is correct, the projector is fine.
Get used to it. The people that are supposed to monitor broadcast levels are not doing their jobs anymore. It seems no one gives a crap, as levels are all over the map. Do NOT blame the projector, it only shows what is being fed to it. I see this BS every day.
ESPECIALLY on a calibrated display.
Sigh....

That sounds to me like what is happening.
I called Starchoice today and asked a tech rep if there were any video controls anywhere on the DSR505 - including any service menus. He replied that there are no such controls.
I explained the inconsistency in flesh tone from program to program and he claimed that he hadn't ever noticed it.
I don't see how one could not notice it, but I guess some people are more sensitive to this than others.

It's very hard to notice something if you NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER look at it...
I cancelled my Cogeco HD cable because the compression artifacts were so bad you couldn't tell what you were looking at sometimes. I called Cogeco dozens of times, they promised at least 6 times to send a head technician out to see it for themselves, and NEVER did.
NO ONE CARES EXCEPT US. Really....
Jesse S 07-22-07, 10:01 PM Roger's Digital cable is the same mess of overcompression. My $10 antenna looks better than their cable feed.
