I asked this about HD-DVD a while ago since I had an HD-DVD player.

Now I've switched to BD.

Since Sony is a big BD supporter, they have any plans anyone has heard of for music on BD?

Music on DTS-MA would be nice but I doubt that will get touched until a player supports it.

As I mentioned in another thread there is a rub to this....I thought one of the audio formats for BD/HD-DVD was just DVD-A's MLP format in a different wrapper.

So if Sony were to release some catalog stuff on BD in one of the lossless formats....they'd be doing DVD-A for the most part.

I'm thinking if hi-res music has a future they will need to tie into a more established format. Both formats allow for a format that would work as hi-res.

Sony abondoned it's own baby the SACD format, which had/has a very hard time to stay afloat , I doubt that Sony will worry about any new music format till the HD video format war settles.

I just watched Bruce Springsteen "Live in Dublin" on blu-ray this afternoon. The 5.1 Uncompressed PCM soundtrack sounded pretty sweet!

Sony hasn't "abandoned" SACD. If they had, they wouldn't have bothered includung SACD playback in the PS3 or some of their DVD players. I will admit that it hasn't caught on really at all with most people going the opposite way in sound quality by using iPods for playing music.

I just wish Sony wold be more willing to open up the format to everyone (other companies) instead of trying to control it so much.

If it comes it will probably now be in the form of HD video like music videos or live performances (or even just pretty pictures) along with the high resolution audio. There's a lot more space on a Blu-ray disc.

The studios probably think SA-CD and DVD-Audio didn't take off because there weren't shiny images on your TV. Obviously, people have no imagination any more! Listening to music and creating your own images that fit the music and your mood like reading a book without illustrations... how absurd! ;)

Oh... one nice thing about Blu-ray is that you can have 6 channels at 24/192 resolution (rather than 2 on DVD-Audio) and 8 channels at 24/96 resolution (rather than 6 on DVD-Audio).

I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't see discs come out (especially concert recordings) that had not only side hall acoustics, but back of the hall acoustics too for an 8 channel mix.

There was talk of expanding the MC experience so the listener could choose to be either in the band (direct sound all around) or in the hall watching the band on stage (direct/ambient approach). Right now we don't have a choice, but get what the studio puts out.

This concept plus HD video might just be the future...

Sony just released a number of SACDs on its Living Stereo series. Not to mention one of the biggest SACD release of the year....Bach: Goldberg Variations - Glenn Gould (re-performance), which include binaural versions for both the CD and DSD layers.

Nice try! It means nothing to those who don't care for classical music, which is where this format exclusively[and jazz] "lives now".

this is what SACD is doing today: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mr19EQe0qaU&mode=related&search=

And we now have a point that proves that with Success of "Uncommon Bach" on HD DVD that is a good starter. So we know by now that people interested in HD Music and Sound as Well as HD Video.

There is a profile created for BD players, profile 3.0. It is an audio only spec. As of now, there is now details about it and perhaps it will not become reality.
But so far, the concerts on bluray have been pretty phenominal !
I.e. Legends of Jazz, Chris Botti(only one with a 96kHz sampling i believe), Incubus, NIN and dave matthews is coming as well.
