The 970 does in fact support 720p..it will ACCEPT the 720p signal than scale it to 1080i.
madblazer 07-22-07, 09:28 PM cool thats realy what i needed to know, but would it be better to send to 480i to the tv since it will upscale. and are these tvs readly avaible or on there way out

but by doing that your not playing in HD..inorder to play in HD with the PS3 you have to send it an HD resolution first (720p) then have the sony scale it too 1080i and then your all set..
WJonathan 07-23-07, 08:49 AM If it's new then that's a great price. This TV is the best "combo" outputter you'll find. It does a great job with 4:3 or HD TV, old SD video games in 480i or p, 720p input, and 1080i input. It has a very smart video processor that upscales all inputs well. The only issue is that it wont do 1080p, which at some point will be a priority with your PS3. SO if you want it primarily as a high-end console display, it may not be the best choice out there.
au revoir 07-23-07, 10:19 AM "The only issue is that it wont do 1080p . . ."
My XBR 970 will accept and display a 1080p feed from my upscaling DVD player. I don't know what the TV is doing with the 1080p signal, but it does look slightly sharper than 1080i.

bkchurch 07-23-07, 11:36 AM Even if it doesn't do 1080p who cares? Other than the progressive nature of the signal it will look exactly the same as 1080i and on a 34" TV anything over 720p is pretty unnecessary unless you're insanely close to the screen.

Well, if the guy is a hardcore videophile he might. When the PS3 really gets rolling a few years from now, developers will be pushing out 1080p games. I personally can't see the difference, but I thought I would throw that one caveat out in case it mattered to the guy. Granted, in order to get a top quality name brand set that truly displays 1080p right now he'd probably have to spend 2K+ on a big plasma. To me the XBR970 is a no brainer right now for the price, but he may have different priorities.
