On every display I have ever owned I see flicker in 1080i rolling credits with a black background. It bugs me so bad I always run at 720p. I think it is just the nature of interlaces signal, or is there something wrong with my setup?

How clean is your power? some times dirty power can cause stuff like this. And even if you have a power conditiner if its old it can be worn down from areas that have very dirty power. I had the same problem years ago. Used the cheaper surge protectors then went to a mid priced Monster power unit and things got much nicer , but then after three years it poped up again, so i went out and bouhgt the same power conditoner and the problem went away. I checked the old power conditioner again just to see, and sure enough the flickers came back.
this might not be right at all but worth checking out.

What frame rate are you running at 1080i?

You will see this on credits with an interlaced signal. The faster the credits "roll" the worse it is. It is exacerbated by a 60 Hz refresh (instead of 72 or 96 but there also).

Fortunately, interlacing artifacts like this are rarely visible on movie content and since the movie is much more important to me than the credits, I run 1080i for the extra detail over 720p.

60 HZ I think on Toshiba HD-DVD via analog, I don't think you really have much choice unless you install an external scaler.

My HTPC runs 720p @72HZ no flicker mostly SD-DVDs some OTA HD. For a NEC XG 1351, 720p is a walk in the park. I did mess around with 1080p but was soft. I think I could dial it in pretty sharp but haven’t taken the time. I know that’s pushing a 7/8” too hard.

I am really close to getting the $300 Blu ray drive for the HTPC, then I can experiment with other higher resolutions/refresh rates with a decent source. I’m tempted to remove the HD-DVD out of the Toshiba if the BR works out well. From all the reading, it should just plug and play with the right software. The xbox upgrade is also an options, but I really don’t want an external drive. I can always reinstall it back in the Toshiba later when lower cost HD-DVD internal drives are available, besides it will be out of warranty in a few weeks and I love taking things apart. :) I already have a video card with HDMI w/HDCP so I should be good to go on that end.
