View Full Version : LCD for gaming with 480p and up?

Hey there folks,

I'm just wondering...I own an xbox and a Wii, both of which the majority of titles function at 480p.
My brother recently introduced me to facts of the wide world of HDTV gaming lag, which had me looking for just a regular SDTV with component inputs!

What I'm wondering is if I'm going to have a huge problem when I'm planning to play these consoles at 480p on a set that will likely have a native res around the 720p zone. I'm mainly looking to get a nice LCD, no larger than a 32" (I'm in a small-ish apartment so anything bigger will require me moving my couch onto my bed for proper viewing :p). Though I'm looking for a 32", I don't know if they generally support 1080i, which is kinda what I'm also looking for...

I'll be doing a variety of things with it ...watching TV through my HTPC setup, using it as an HDTV preview monitor for my video editing projects, but also a fair amount of gaming. I'm really concerned that I'm going to wind up having issues with some games (like Guitar Hero and other timing sensitive games), and end up having to move back to my 24" SDTV for gaming...

Any thoughts, suggestions, etc are welcome :)

For actual sets, I'm looking for something definitely under $1500 CAD, preferably a bit less.

Thanks all!

Hmm, surprised more people haven't responded to this.

Anyway, I'm in a similar situation to you. What I did was pick up a Gateway FPD2275W 22" LCD monitor. It seemed much cheaper than getting a small HDTV, and it has higher resolution than most (1680x1050).

I think that I'm going to return it, though, because of one major issue: blacklight bleed. It's pretty bad at the top and bottom and it isn't that great on the sides, either.

Now, aside from that, it does seem to be a pretty good monitor (I haven't noticed anything in the way of lag, but I'm using it for a Dreamcast hooked up via VGA, so maybe a component connection would be different). And, like I said, they're quite inexpensive so it's at least worth a look.

Lag is not really an issue with consoles any more as long as your set was recently produced. I assume your looking for an HDTV and not a computer monitor rhough. People seem to be having more issues with lag from their PC's on an LCD; espeacially those that game competitively. You likely won't have any issues but if you buy locally the retailer may allow you to hook your system up in the store so that you can see for yourself.

I have a DLP and there is no perceivable lag..I have an LCD (PC monitor) on its way to me and all the research I did on it says there is no lag...

I'm using my 360 in my theater (Sharp 12K DLP Projector) and it's working great. The only problem is that my kids want to watch movies at the same time that I'm able to go on to xBox Live...

So, I'm thinking about getting a dedicated WS LCD monitor that I can connect directly to the 360.

Has anyone else done this? Any brand / model recommendations?

Thanks!
