Hi Everyone

I have just had cable tv installed and hooked up to my XG. The cable box has a scart out and a cable that converts it to component. The component cable goes into my NEC switcher which has a component card.

The problem is that only the left half of the picture comes up. The entire right side of the picture is blacked out.

I have tried the cable box and cable on an lcd tv with component in and it runs perfectly. But not on the XG! :(

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in anticipation.

you might have blanking turned up too much ... or maybe image centering off ... do all the menus and internal sources work properly?

Hi Thanks for the reply.

Its strange al the other sources work properly...the dvd works.....etc...but the cable box only shows half the picture. I have checked the blanking and picture position and everything is as it should be.

I'm at a loss. The only thing I can think of is that the scart to component cable doesn't work too well o the NEC switcher and XG.

Why don't you update your profile with your location or give us a hint where your from?
Based on you telling us your using a Scart connection you must be in Europe someplace.
Might be a Pal thing.
I don't know why so many forum members leave out their location. You might find someone local or around the corner from you that might be willing to help.

Hi Sorry I'm in Australia.

I don't know what sort of output the cable box provides...whether it is pal, ntsc and what res it does.. I have asked Optus (the provider) but they have no idea.

Well, if you're around Melbourne, Mark_AW should be able to straighten you out - he's big into NEC and the NEC switcher, plus he knows more about your funky tv (;)) than some of us poor yanks.

just as a wild guess, any chance the cable box is putting out a different res than your dvd player or other sources? If so, you'll need a new memory block. I know that different res into my NEC moves the pic all over the screen....

It'll be PAL. I don't know if it's Progressive or Interlaced.

Which component card is in the NEC switcher?

What happens if you stick the S-Video output from the optus box straight into the projector?

BTW, whatever you do, it's going to look terrible...

Hi Mark.

I haven't tried the s-video b/c the optus box doesn't reach and I don't have a long s-video cable. The 1/2 picture that I have isn't bad, but I am prepared for an average pic.

I have a standard NEC component card in the 6020 switcher. The component card works properly with a dvd player plugged into it. It's only this funky optus box that makes it play up.

I'm in Melb too.

I reckon you might be sending Progressive to an input card that only takes Interlaced.

BTW, is your name Robert by any chance?

Yes it is....?

I'll see if I can check whether the box outputs progressive or interlaced.

I knew that because of my Psychic Powers....MWHAHAHA.

Nah, you've posted around about CRT on a forum, or sold a projector or something, I forget why I know your name, but we've never met.

Could be.....I think you're right about the progressive thing.

I checked the booklet that came with the NEC 6010-HD card I bought from NEC in 2003 and it says it is for the ISS-6010 switcher. I have a 6020 switcher. Could that be contributing to the problem?

I haven't been able to find out anything about the box or the card re: progressive or not.

Do you know anything about the Moome cards for the ISS...the component HDMI. They sound like the way to go...??

I have a Moome ISS card. It's pretty good, but not perfect - it shows "shadowing" on my Sony 24" CRT monitor - it's not clamping black properly.

But the XG manages to clamp the signal and it's ok.

I've never tried the component inputs.

And...you bought something from NEC direct?? Ouch, that must have hurt...

But I don't think the 6010 card in a 6020 switcher is the issue, I think all the cards are 6010.

Is that the latest moome card? The one with the gamma board etc? I would really like to phase out the momitsu v880 dvd player I have. Its about 3years old, with the bnc mod etc. Somtimes it is stubborn in sarting to play a dvd. I'd like to buy a blu ray and hook it up with the moome HDMI card. Is that the best way to go to hook up hdmi?

I bought directly from NEC (Noble park)...they had about 10 new 6020 switchers for $100 each...I bought 1 and told some other guy I knew who bought the rest. I think they only charged me about $150 for the card.

No way! I think that just raised up Oz on the bizarro list - when I was there, everything electronic was about double stateside price. (and that's not including the 30% higher valuation of A$ at the time.) If it weren't for the shipping, I'd ask you to grab me one at that price. Cool. ;)

They don't perchance have any new XGs for around 4 or 500 bucks, do they?

It was just an anomaly...they were clearing out old stuff they didn't support anymore and didn't care too much about how the got for it.

Yeah, a bunch of us bought the Sydney NEC switcher stock (20 or so switchers + heaps of cards) for next to nothing as well - probably at about the same time.

Mark

I have worked out that the optus tv box outputs an interlaced signal and the ISS component card only likes a progressive signal. I'm having a cypress de-interlacer sent to me so hopefully that will fix the problem.

Good call!
