View Full Version : 808s vs. 1208

So, my 808s is sitting in the break room waiting to get tested out to see if its blue tube is usable, when lo, do I find a 1208, locally, on Craigslist, of all places.

Tubes are unknown (am trying to get more info) but it's no more expensive than the 808s was. If the tubes are good, is it worth going through billy hell getting the 1208 and trying to yank my $300 back out of the 808s? Any chance of *getting* $300 for the 808s with a shot blue? And finally, if we assume that the tubes are roughly equivalent (either good or marginal) on either, are there any reasons to want the 1208 over the 808s?

Yeesh... :p

PS: The 808s is graphics, not data!

I'd take that 808s off yor hands if you would crate it up and ship it to Sweden.

I'd have no problem shipping it (my business freights stuff to Europe all the time), but it'd probably be fairly expensive - it would probably double the price! The only known caveats for the 808s are the blue tube (which Draganm and Person99 are sure will cause seizures, convulsions, and death if viewed, but which to my wholly untrained eyes looks acceptable) and that at the moment I don't have the remote (left it with the guy! Agh!).

It's got a little comm box thing which I think might let you control the PJ via serial, but not sure.

I still haven't got a response from the guy with the 1208, so I'll have to see how that goes. If the thing has minty tubes I'll be sorely tempted, but hopefully I can get some more advice from the regs on that.

Sare there any reasons to want the 1208 over the 808s?

The most common 1208 is a 1208/2. If it is a 1208/2, the 808s will throw a better picture as it as a much better signal path. The only advantage the 1208/2 would have is that it is quieter.

Of course, yours was the 808s with the super-duper toasty tubes, right? If so, and the 1208/2 tubes are good, then it would be better.

This explains my recent difficulties at work. I suppose the only antidote is a G90 blend? :D

Still haven't heard back from the Craigslist guy. Maybe he got a better offer from someone who's sending it to his grandson in Nigeria.

Perisoft,

I saw the ad on craigslist too, Will be in Henrietta tonight and may go and look at it if he responds to my e-mail in time. I'm not really interested in buying it as my Marquee works just fine for me.

If you get a chance to see it, I'd appreciate you letting me know what it looks like! It's an hour or an hour and a half for me to get up there, and I haven't heard back yet either. So if you do and I don't, let him know that the David W. guy is seriously interested in it! :)

Will let you know what I find out.

Well, got in touch with the guy. I guess he's moving and the thing's a boat anchor... it was used in a university lecture hall; they sold it to him, and he only put a few hours on it, supposedly. Doesn't know hours, but says he calibrated with AVIA and whites are quite white (and blacks are black... go figure :p).

It is a 1208/2 - so that's my only worry at the moment: Whether I'm trading too much in real quality given the signal path as draganm says. But what I really need to do now is set up the 808s and do enough of a calibration to test whether it's really an abomination color-wise, I guess.

What do you mean "as draganm says." He doesn't even know enough about barcos to know they are better than Marquees! :p :p ;)

sure I do, a 1208 is exactly 400 doo-dad's better than an 808, it's simple math. :) Keeping track of Barco model numbers and which ones have Scheimphlug, high bandwidth, the "good" tubes, etc. is an exercise in frustration. It seems like if you want all the good features with most Barco's you need to buy 2 or 3 machines and cannibalize them to build a Frankenbarco. Who needs all that hassle?

Yeah, just buy a NEC instead - much less hassle!

NEC = less hassle. You are cracking me up!!!!! :D :D :D

Just make sure you plan to watch all movies with subtitles as the XG will drown out all dialog!

I also saw the add and sent an email to the guy but I haven't heard back. Is it sold? I am trying to upgrade from my sony 1252 and was going to drive there from boston if the tubes looked good in any pictures that he could send me. It would be 15 hours round trip and over $100 just in gass but I can't find a better deal anywhere near me!

Someone on the forum had a mint PG+ for sale in Boston...I think he wanted $350 for it! Find this guy...I'll bet he still has it. Search the for sale forum.

my pg is pretty quiet.. quieter than a g90 that is for sure... xg's are a little louder but you can always do a fan mod.
