Razor Digital Exclusively Blu-ray
Posted July 24, 2007 by Josh
Blu-ray Movies Razor Digital has announced that they will be supporting Blu-ray exclusively, and will release four IMAX titles for Blu-ray on November 13th. Those titles include 'Africa: The Serengeti', 'Alaska: Spirit of the Wild', 'Australia: Land Beyond Time' and 'Antarctica: An Adventure of a Different Nature'. More titles are promised if these sell well.
No specs have been announced at this time. Mitch Perliss, Razor Digital EVP stated that his company picked Blu-ray because of the household penetration of Blu-ray by way of the PlayStation 3.

As long as these titles are >55 min. and <$23, I'll be picking these up. :)

IMAX titles aren't typically very long, maybe 50 mins ?
But if they are priced right, i.e. under $20 they should sell very well.
I'll definitely be picking all 4 of these up when they arrive.
These sound cool.
And IMAX showings are usually of pretty decent length.
kenliles 07-24-07, 12:57 PM I have these (Africa and Antarctica) on DVD - run time is only about 40 minutes each; But they are pretty spectacular; Perhaps the BD version will be lengthened a bit, but I would get these regardless personally...

briankmonkey 07-24-07, 01:01 PM awesome. The news just keeps getting better and better :D
beatboy77 07-24-07, 01:04 PM I think with all of these smaller studios announcing Blu-ray exclusivity recently it is clear that Blu-ray is as cheap if not cheaper to produce as HD-DVD.

briankmonkey 07-24-07, 01:07 PM I do find it funny that HD-DVD fanatics constantly shouted that HD DVD would get all of the small studios, yet I keep reading studio after studio going blu.

i will buy them. i love imax and docus stuff.
anyword on the sound? because i am starting to buy only movies now with lossless audio. i am getting tired of movies not having lossless. never thought i would be so annoyed by movies not having lossless. but it is hard to listen to Dolby only nowadays when your ears are used to lossless.
Wendell R. Breland 07-24-07, 01:29 PM I have the DVD version of Africa: The Serengeti. Is the other titles as good (or better) than this one?

dam, that was incredible! Thanks :)
JAG1977 07-24-07, 01:31 PM What's that now, 4 or 5 new exclusive studios in the past 2 weeks?
Despite overall sales being low it does look as though retailers and studios are making decisions about which format to back right now, even before the important Christmas sales are in.
Look's like it's already too late for HD-DVD.
donricouga 07-24-07, 01:33 PM LOL, another one just got posted. See first post !
Maybe we should start a master thread of all studios going to bluray :p

Citing Blu-ray's larger installed hardware base for its exclusive support of the format, Razor Digital said they have no current plans to release on titles on HD DVD, although they didn't rule out the possibility.
"You have to respond to the marketplace," Mitch Perliss, Razor Digital EVP told Home Media Magazine. "We wanted to go worldwide (with the product), and we couldn't afford to do both (Blu-ray and HD DVD)."
The industry and most consumers have already made their decision. At this point we may see Toshiba going Blu before Universal!
It would be foolish to believe that HD DVD has a chance to pull out a win. Pray for the HD DVD camp that the cheap Chinese players won't need to be recalled. ;)

They’ve also got one of the most powerful creative men in Hollywood (in fact, I think he was voted THE most powerful a couple years back by EW) as a vocal supporter of the Blu-ray format, namely………… Jerry Bruckheimer.
See this link and click on the video clip entitled “Pirates of the Caribbean Event” to listen to his spiel, as well as other notables enjoying themselves :) while getting the word out.

John Lasseter is also said to be a big supporter of Blu-ray, whether that is because of Disney or because he just thinks it's great I have no idea.

No slouch either. :)
Seems the Jerry Bruckheimer clip isn’t working all the time, so people can click on the written word here………………..

B.T.W.,
Jerry B.’s dominant strength is not so much as to how he can influence Joe6pack, but how he can influence fellow friends and colleagues in the film community. :)
Kram Sacul 07-24-07, 08:45 PM Predicted response from a HD-DVD extremist:
But what about the independent film on-demand thing on Amazon.com? Only HD-DVDs! And with cheap $199 players Disney and Fox are going to go neutral by the end of the year and... 51gb discs are coming, I swear! And Blu-ray is full of DRM! That's not good! And... the specs are incomplete and... mpeg-2... uh... SONY IS EVIL! ::jumps out a window::

"We wanted to go worldwide (with the product), and we couldn't afford to do both (Blu-ray and HD DVD)."I found that quite interesting. Despite the small numbers and the apparent dismissal of places like Europe and Australia by some, it appears the dark foreign lands outside the US may play a part after all.
Assayer 07-24-07, 11:31 PM Excluding the adult industry, what other small studios of consequence have yet to align with one format or the another? That is to say, who should we be watching for future announcements in the weeks and months to come?

Can you imagine how long it took to set this up? Amazing.
XBRSteve 07-25-07, 12:11 AM This is all great but who the hell are these company's and what movies can they bring us other than IMAX films?
