Oh hell yes. Starship Troopers is maybe my favorite movie, up there with Rushmore and Robocop.

And it comes out on my birthday, no less.

Cool. Two Verhoeven vfx cheesefests on the same day.

The longer cut of Hollow Man will probably have those shots in the trailers that weren't in the actual film and, of course, the extended rape scene that test audiences didn't like.

Wow! I have been waiting for an HD version of Starship Troopers for a long time. It was the first DVD I bought, way back when the only player I had was in my computer. This is GREAT news.

This is very good news, not so much because of the titles themselves (I won't personally buy either) but because it says that Sony is serious about winning and knows that they have to part with their content in order to win.

Starship Troopers with PCM. I might buy 3. The DTS on the superbit kicks ass.
"Come on you apes!"

That blue plasma is going to look super slick. And the scene where the ships collide, oh yeah.

Never heard of Hollow Man though. Is it any good?

Any news on the extras for Starship Troopers?

In the US Sony released the title twice (not counting Superbit), the second time around it was a very nice 2 disc set. But in the UK the title was released by Buena Vista and only had a commentary, deleted scenes and a featurette (the same as the original US DVD from Sony)

I hope Starship Troopers pans out- but I won't be surprised if it is indefintely postponed at the last minute.
This movie and Mask Of Zorro are the only two other modern Sony pictures I'm eager to get in HD- at least that come to mind. Being the films 10th anniversary, it doesn't seem out of line to expect some new re-release this year- even if its only a bare bones Bd.
Being Sony, I'm sure we won't be seeing any significant extras ported over.

yet.

Slightly OT, but Verhoeven's adaptation of "Starship Troopers" was intended to be over-the-top. It's a sly criticism of facist war-mongering (ironically posited somewhat by Heinlein's book), because Verhoeven grew up in the Nazi-occupied Netherlands. Thus, SS Doogie, "Would you like to know about the Triumph of the Will?", and the rampant xenophobia.

Thus, SS Doogie, "Would you like to know about the Triumph of the Will?", and the rampant xenophobia.

Let's set the record straight from this interview with Paul Verhoeven himself:

There was an article in The Washington Post when it came out that was not written by a movie critic. One of the editors wrote it saying that this was a neo-Nazi movie and I was promoting Fascism. That same article was published in all the European newspapers. When I went to do the publicity tour in Europe, everybody was already looking through that lens. The Washington Post is not a reliable newspaper anyway but they said the film was written by a neo-Nazi or a Fascist and directed by one. I strongly disagree with that. I saw it as a critique of American society. It is done in an ironic way but not pushing it very hard, which I hate because then it becomes dogmatic and becomes something else other than filmmaking. It was more that the novel by Robert Heinlein is very militaristic and has a tendency to be pro-Fascist a bit. We took a lot of cues out of American society at that time, which was [President Bill] Clinton, not realizing that a couple years later this whole situation would be much more acute and now you can put the film as a blueprint over Iraq or Afghanistan. But of course, I didn’t know of bin Laden at that time.

those reviewers obviously missed the point.
The film was satire on many levels.
The beautiful young (but limited range) leads were specifically cast for those qualities to put the material in the mode of a typical WWII era propganda B movie.
The impossibly beautiful, fresh scrubbed leads are the vehicle that leads us into cheering for the heroes (who are actually war mongering fascists).

Exactly - Verhoeven managed to get that message across perfectly in Starship Troopers. His commentary on the DVD is well worth a listen (especially if someone missed the point of the movie)

On the other hand, the lack of acting abilities and camp in Showgirls was not deliberate however ;)

I thought Verhoven's Starship Troopers was great, definitely following in the Robocop vein, the neo-facist gov't taken to the extreme. Yes, I know it wasn't quite like the books, if you want that go watch Roughnecks (http://www.amazon.com/Roughnecks-Starship-Troopers-Chronicles-Campaigns/dp/B0009I8QI6) (which is excellent in its own right).

I'd say the Starship Troopers movie is more like Joe Haldeman's "Forever War" and John Steakley's "Armor" (oh how I'd love to see this as a movie) than anything else.

I disagree. How do you explain the casting of Elizabeth Berkley, an actress who is neither remotely talented nor even particularly attractive? Verhoeven cast her solely for her background on a wholesomely innocuous kiddie TV series, and his lecherous desire to defile that image in front of millions of Americans.

Zwartboek has a super nice close up, that will look awesome in HD. :)
Maybe that's why the film ran so long.

2 and a half hours for a thriller doesn't work.
Verhoeven is still awesome. He loves the full frontal.

No, Sony did not announce this title. The Internet news postings were premature and based off speculation and inside information, not an official announcement from the studio. That has not yet occurred for Hollow Man or Starship Troopers.

The problem here is websites jumping the gun stating titles as being "announced" when they haven't been.

I can 100% confirm that it's region free - the UK disc plays fine on my US PS3.

I'm a terrible judge of picture & audio quality; whenever I think a disc looks good there'll be a thread somewhere saying the opposite - from the 5 mins I spent with it last night I thought it looked very nice, showing some good detail in the shots of the troopers walking through the rocky canyon. Likewise, the audio was nice & clear. Probably worth waiting for a more comprehensive review from someone more tech than me though.

I forgot to check the 'detail' in the shower scene though :(

They're probably going to release it next year when the new sequel comes out.

Well, look what they did with POTC... :)

I've already ordered the UK version. Avoiding the wait for the US version is the over-riding factor.

I know a friend who is a BIG Starship Troopers fan (even though the classic book is better-- Verhoven lost its anti-military-dictatorship vibe in all the mayhem and blood and cheesy dialog/acting he loves so much).

So, for his sake I hope Sony doesn't do a Fifth Element and actually starts out with a fresh transfer from completely clean and high quality film elements.

The DVD transfers are riddled with scratches, dirt, etc.

Why would I be talking about that?

The plan was to seek a theatrical release. Who knows if it will pan out, but that's the plan. Wiki isn't very reliable, not that imdb is, but:

If you can wait a little while, it's coming out in Australia in October. Should be the same exact disc as the UK, but about $10 less. The UK is one of the worst places to import from due to the exchange rate. Korea, France and Australia often work out better.

Just to point out, this is still a relatively low budget film. Like 20 million or so, so I wouldn't get my hopes up too high.

Heck that's probably better than what you could buy it for at Worst Buy! :)

Delaying Starship Troopers is the first thing that the BDA has done in a while (Fox's azz-hattery aside) that has seriously ticked me off, not just been a major annoyance. There's no reason to play these release date games, especially with popular titles.

In the HD-DVD forum I could have sworn there was a topic called something like "Does HD-DVD really want to win?" I keep thinking to myself... it's the BDA that seems like they really could care less if their format survives.

I guess "ST" will be my first import. I'm starting to wish neither of these formats survives... I don't think I want either group to be holding the keys to my movie bliss.

I won't pay that much for a combo. What kind of audio does ST have.
Is it PCM 16 or 24.

If it has 24bit audio I might have to import.
Why the delay?

From what I have gathered online, it is going to be 16 bit. But Buena Vista has a bad habit of labeling the bit rates wrong for their titles all the time. I have my copy on pre-order from Amazon/UK so I guess I will know next week.

I don't like importing often, and I won't do it for The Rock, Crimson Tide, Con Air or The Crow since I think those have a good shot of coming out here soon.

But since I have spent ~$40 on several import HD-DVD's, I can't justify not getting this, as I love it too much.

Put my pre-order in with Amazon UK today.

While I admit I'm disappointed about the delay, I'm not in any hurry. The only thing that matters to me is that they do it RIGHT with this release, with top notch PQ/AQ and extras. Hopefully that's why they're delaying it, you can always hope right :D

My U.K. copy shipped today. I'd presume that the north american delay is because Sony can't press discs fast enough yet to truly prove "kontent is kaiser"..... ;) It's a theory that fits the facts anyways.

I just watched this again a few days ago, and have a new view of the movie. Just so we're all on the same page: the Federation sent the meteorites themselves because they needed a reason to go to war...right? There is no way bugs could have sent meteorites across the galaxy! I would guess they also had the "mormon extremists" murdered....can't have another society competing with fascism, can we? Comments?

There is an animated series called, “Roughnecks - The Starship Troopers Chronicles.” It has visuals based on those from the movie, but is somewhat closer to the book. I highly recommend it, to get a better feel for what is going on. Then, of-course, the original book is a must read, also.

No, I don’t think the federation sent the meteorites themselves. And the bugs are quite a bit more advanced than can be discerned from just watching the movie.

He was making a joke about 'some' government; I agree. The movie is always relevant. I watched it last year and is said something like "500,00 dead in 20 mins." I laughed my ass off from the sheer absurdity, and the fact that certain administrations are likely to do ridiculous things like that.

It's definently an anti-war movie, and anti-establishment movie. The interactive news, with pop-ups, the idiotic government propaganda. It's like looking into a crystal ball.

Roughnecks is cool. I liked the power suites, and the larger bugs. The water planet was really neat too. ST could be a good film franchise if it had a smart director and a budget.

How about just double-dipping and releasing the film now as a bare-bones then releasing it again as a super-deluxe special five disc edition for $60 or whatever next year? I buy and watch movies, not extras.

I got my Sharship Troopers and watched it today.

The PCM 5.1 rocks and that's the way to go. The picture is very good, sharp and the colors are bright and vibrant - I guess this was always supposed to look more like a Loreal commersial (with blood and gore) than Blade Runner ;)

The amount of grain that has been discussed in this thread is probably on the negative and not a fault of the HD master. I was not bothered by it anyway and I watched it on a 50" plasma.

The commentary was of course stripped to give room to dubbed DTS MA tracks (damn you Buena Vista!), all the other extras from the single disc DVD are present.

I guess Sony might come up with a better version extras wise, but on the A/V side I dont think they will do better than this. So if you don't care too much about the extras, then this is a given purchase. Get this BD and become a citizen! :D

I couldn't wait and ordered the UK version earlier in the week with priority shipping--arrived yesterday and I watched it last night. PQ and AQ were excellent, any grain must have been in the original film. It's a VC-1 encode that tops out at 42.5 mbps in a few scenes! For a real fan of this movie it's well worth the cost.

I also have HD-DVD and couldn't help but wish it'd been released in that format so the "Do You Want to Know More" buttons could actually work! If my PS3 can be updated for BDJ and IF they re-release a BD with this feature I'm going to double dip.
