With the $100 price drop of Sony's discontinued 60GB PlayStation 3 now in the books, many industry-watchers are eagerly awaiting July's hardware sales figures from the stat-tracking NPD Group. While those official numbers won't be available until August, a few analysts have already weighed in on the console's prospects, stating that while it was a good first step, the price cut alone won't be enough to stimulate sales for Sony's much-maligned console.
Looking to put the naysayers to rest, Sony sends word today that since the PS3's price cut on July 9, the console has received a 135 percent sales uptick at the company's top five retail partners in the US, based on its own preliminary data. Additionally, Sony's entire PlayStation hardware lineup has seen a 161 percent spike, software is up 15 percent, and accessories have risen 60 percent since the announcement two weeks ago.
johnsmith808 07-25-07, 06:26 PM After this news, Sony will be absolutely insane to keep the 80 gig model at $599. Unless of course they like having tons of stock. I have a funny feeling that this whole $499 for the 60gig "whlle it lasts" thing is just a sales ploy. "Buy now, offer won't last long!" Sounds like an infomercial.
IeraseU 07-25-07, 06:57 PM I agree, the 80gig will go to $499 at the time the 60gig stock runs out. No way Sony goes into the holiday selling season with only one SKU at $599.
brophog 07-25-07, 07:01 PM Has either Sony or MS even sniffed breaking even? I know MS hasn't, and likely never will. Don't you think THAT is insane? I don't get your insanity comment at all. What are these companies in it for if not to make a profit? Bragging rights?
Now THAT is insane.

- The point though is that the $499 price point was what a lot of people were waiting for, which is why sales increased. I would imagine that sales would go back to normal again if Sony releases the 80GB + Motorstorm - Emotion Engine for $599 since it's clearly not the better deal.

but, every PS3 owner should be rooting for PS3 sales to keep increasing. A larger install base means developers will put more effort in to making games that take advantage of the PS3 hardware.

in this generation very few consoles will break even MS finally last year started making profit no BOX alone and PS3 they predicted 2012 they will finally start making profit on each console sold. This is good news for sony fanboys I know im happy that SONY took the price down im waiting on 399.99 though then its gonna heat up.
William Mapstone 07-25-07, 07:30 PM For what its worth, according to vgchartz;
July 22nd 2007, PS3 sold is 3,892,034
July 23rd 2006, Xbox 360 sold is 3,844,532
So far, PS3 sales are inline with xbox360 sales at the 8 to 9 month mark since launch.

Agreed. Really mean for those who are like keeping track of the console battle.
johnsmith808 07-25-07, 07:53 PM Console gaming business is a tough business indeed. How do you sell a product that is worth far more than most are willing to pay for, and yet make a profit? The only answer is time. Usually 5 years. Sony and Microsoft have lost millions already, but hope to recoup it in years 4 and 5 of the system. Of course, software is where the big money is. The larger the installed base, the more software you'll sell, the more profit you could make.
It's kind of like cell phones. They sell you the phone at a loss (or even free), then make money on the service.
This generation has faced the challenge of selling relatively more expensive hardware than in the past. Try putting a pc system together with the power of the ps3 or 360, then you'll see what an absolute bargain these systems are. But most people don't see it this way, and those are the one's Sony and Microsoft are trying to sway. Thus price drops are needed, even at a loss. But don't think for a second that they won't make money at the end.
I'm not a gamer, but do fool around with the demo's here and there just for kicks. I'm proud to say that last Friday I picked up the PS3 and have since updated the software to 1.9. I couldn't be happier, it's upconversion is better than my old Denon 1920. The sound is also phenomenal. I highly recommend the PS3!
The price was part of it, but the free Blu-Rays is what tipped me. I still think $499 is too high, so when the Blu-Ray deal is done they need to get down to around $400 and I think the system will start to flourish.
Johnsteph10 07-25-07, 09:36 PM 135% increase and yet software up only 15% ?
Just shows that Sony needs software for its PS3. I have a launch day PS3 and have played only demos on it.
Sony will sell A LOT of units when some killer games come out - and they are on the horizon (some of them, anyway).
SteelRush 07-25-07, 10:11 PM I smell a lock coming.

Ya, there just are not that many games to buy yet. This fall is going to be fantastic though.

Indeed. I did my preorders finally since titles I want are coming out in August and I ended up putting in for about $700 worth of PS3 games through December. Lots of things I want coming up.
johnsmith808 07-25-07, 10:59 PM Why would this thread be locked? To my understanding, it's only if you are comparing one system to another, right? This is just an analysis of the effect the price drop of the ps3 has had on it's sales. Maybe I'm missing something.

Yep, basically my story too. Not a huge gamer but I do have an original XBOX that was still seeing ocassional use. I wasn't loyal to any game system so the highly regarded Blu-Ray player is what really swayed me.
It doesn't hurt that HD gaming is finally here or the fact that I can use the PS3 as a media center, web browser, and photo server . I think Sony is wise to promote the many other features of the PS3, the types of features that will attract a wider audience than just "hardcore gamers".
The PS3 may cost more to make initially... but Sony has effective ways of getting their own costs down.
MSFT seems to have difficulty doing the same. They never made money off the original xbox and Just when it looked like they were making money off their 360... 1.19 billion dollar charge(or approximately $100 per console sold)

From Kyser
"No more threads on PS3 sales figures!
All they do is incite flame wars.
Whether it be that the PS3 is selling well, or not so well."
The point is that these threads end up being havens for trolls and fanboys alike. The board decided long ago to crack down on them.
wsylvan 07-25-07, 11:36 PM Grrr....I just came out from under my bridge because I saw this thread pass by. 360's rule and PS3 lovers are looking for anything positive. Grrrrrr. Something about gears of wars....Grrrrr....Something about what ever new Ps3 games coming out will suck. Gurrrrr....Halo Halo....Grrrr....Killzone was pre-rendered....
You can try to kill me all you want, but I regenerate 3 hp per turn. Only fire...flames....can kill me.
wsylvan 07-25-07, 11:37 PM Ok, that was just a drill - get ready everyone.
NewOrlnsDukie 07-25-07, 11:38 PM I think the Lair release will do some serious good on the game sales front.
Of course, Madden is the same day, and it certainly will have the spotlight. :(

William Mapstone 07-26-07, 08:11 AM http://www.pro-g.co.uk/ps3/motorstorm/news-5667.html
R:FoM and Motorstorm sales are decent in the PAL region. 600,000 copies of R:FoM and 500,000 copies of Motorstorm were sold in the 10 weeks after launch.
Currently worldwide, R:FoM is at about 1.5 million and Motorstorm is at about 1 million copies sold.
jason10mm 07-26-07, 08:39 AM Well, they would have to wait at least a month after selling the last 60 gig at $500 before they can drop the 80 to $500, else they would get a FLOOD of 60 gig returns and have to eat that cost. But a 135% sale increase is what, 250K units at most? So at that rate it would take 3-4 months at least to clear out the 60 gig inventory and I doubt many 80 gigs will sell until that happens. But by the time the only really sure-fire PS3 fall game comes out (GTA4) the 80 gig should be the only option, for whatever price.
I really think the 80 gig will stay at $600 through the holidays, since that is when Sony will sell the most consoles regardless of price and they can save a lot of loss at the $600 price point versus $500. Then, after the holiday crush and when they have a stable of strong games, they can drop the price to keeps the sales rolling through the spring/summer sales drought.
If the 360 drops in price and the Halo3 effect sells 2 million consoles in September, then maybe Sony will have to dig deep. But if they (Sony) can clear a million units over the next three months and gains on the 360 I don't think they will be under the same kind of pressure to increase their user base.
They are still in a tough spot, but if $500 is the sweet spot for them (despite it not working so well for the 20 gig, which maybe was more because of the scarcity and early adopter cold shoulder) then all the better for Sony. I want the 60 giger to sell poorly though, so they are forced to sell it for less or bundle it with some games (R:FOM is the obvious choice) so I can buy in for less :P
FrankJ.Cone 07-26-07, 09:02 AM 135% increase and yet software up only 15% ?
Its the best deal in BR players, thats to be expected.
135% increase and yet software up only 15% ?
The amount of software sold is directly related to the total installed base of consoles, not the weekly console sales. A 135% increase in console weekly sales likely only increased the total base of consoles by a few percent.

From your wink, (and the fact that you are saying there are more copies of RFOM sold then PS3's on the market), I'm tempted to think your are joking. Yet I don't see how it's funny. So I'm confused.

I don't like that policy. I probably wouldn't have read this news if the OP hadn't posted it. (Almost every other gaming site is blocked at work.)

I've been comtemplating buying a second copy myself.... Darn kid and his friends keep hogging the game.

If the trolls didn't feast on threads like this in the past, I doubt AVS would have to resort to this kind of policy. You can thank them for it. :(

yup, Kyser closed a thread that compared PS2 and PS3 sales in the PAL region. Damn PS2 trolls...

I personally have 3 copies and I know most PS3s gamers have more copies than I do......by buddie has 6 copies. :)

I've been lurking and reading here for a while trying to decide if the PS3 was for me - main use will be BD player and likely some small amount of gaming. I am waiting 'til the new Pioneer Elites come out in Sept before deciding betwee the 60" there or the 58" Panny 1080p plasma that recently came out.
The combination of the price reduction and the five free movies caused me to take the plunge and buy the PS3 - even before I have a TV ythat will do it justice. :(
I got it up and connected to my wireless net and found it to be a relatively straightforward process. I have downloaded a couple of demos and have pretty much confirmed that my young granddaughters don't have to worry about me beating them. :)
I called Sony to ask one question and started of the conversation by telling the CSR that my wife suggested that I tell her my age first. 65 - she laughed and proceeded to help. (Everything seems to be working except in that I own no games I can't acess on-line playstation gaming nor playstation network friends. She suggested getting a free Demo initially, however, I guess the free Demos don't allow on-line access to play against others.)
In any event, as I said the combination of price reduction and free movies caused me to buy at this time.

If I am not mistaken, I believe the Full Auto 2 demo supports on-line play. I thought I read that somewhere, I never confirmed it because I had already bought the full game and had no need to download the demo.

June 2007 Console Sales
Wii: 381,800 units
Xbox 360: 198,400 units
PS3: 98,500 units
PS3 July (est. based on Sony statement): 231,475 which would put them in second if the 360 stays the same.

Thank you! My wife came home from work to find me playing a first person shooter demo on the PS3 - and losing lots of blood. I fired up the DVD player accessory and now have a fully operational BD player and up-rezzing DVD player via the PS3. :)
Apparently sales figures threads are no longer taboo? I guess Kyser and AVS decided to let the adults enjoy their gaming forum.
I hope July shows some very strong numbers for the PS3, it should afterall.

why wouldnt it.....
I am not a marketing expert (and perhaps some of you are), but to me a spike in sales due to a price drop usually signifies a shift in sales from 1 time period to the other (ie all you really do is move sales from November-December to now assuming a price 'drop' was going to happen then). People who were on the fence to buy a PS3 now had a reason to jump in rather than wait. However, these are the same people that were going to buy the PS3 anyways. I know I have been like that. I had been planning to get the PS3 'at some point' and when Eb games had their trade in special (trade in your PS2 for a $100 credit to a PS3) it sealed the deal for me.
The real question is whether or not they can sustain the sales figure quarter over quarter, including the usual spike during the holidays and continue to see a month over month increase in sales signifing growth.

All the 120 million people that currently have PS2s will eventually want to get a PS3 or 360. I dont pretend to know what they will end up going for though.

Sony couldn't have put it any better. :D
Sony needs to keep the ps3 price at $499 or less. Even when the good games come rolling in, $600 is just too much to ask most people to pay for a console. Can't blame the customer for including bluray in your system.
