View Full Version : Worst HD Buzz Words?

So we're more than a year into this thing and we've heard lots of buzz words from both camps regarding features, capabilities, whatever. I'm personally tired of seeing them pop up over and over again. What are some of the HD buzz words on your ignore list?

Blu-ray supporters don't like seeing:
PiP
Universal
Price
Xbox 360
Amirm

HD DVD supporters don't like seeing:
Combo disc
Bandwidth
Disney
PS3
The Digital Bits

Both sides equally hate at various times:
Chinese players
DTS-MA
MPEG-2

How's that for an objective stab at a subjective topic? :)

"Interactvity." Both sides, but especially the HDDVD partisans who seem to think they have some tangible advantage other than easier firmware updates and amidst the marketing drivel.

I think the 2 main words that are buzz killing for me now are Sony and Universal. Any links that start with either of these words are worthless on the threads anymore.

Sony states "blah, blah, blah, we won!, blah, blah, blah"
Universal states " blah, blah, blah, No you didn't!, blah, blah, blah"

Tiring. :(

Rationalization Buzzwords

More capacity: meh, 30gb is good enough.

More bandwidth: meh, PiP is cool.

More CE support: meh, the evil Sony empire is buying their exclusivity.

More studio support: meh, the evil Sony empire is buying their exclusivity.

PS3: meh, they don't count.

Harder coating: meh, its probably got disc rot.

Blockbuster: meh, doesn’t matter. I prefer Netflics.

Denon: meh, the players are too expensive.

Target: meh, they don’t have much of a selection anyway.

"Format war"

In my ancient copy of the New World Dictionary, the primary definition of war is: open armed conflict betwen countries or between factions within the same country. That isn't what this is! Nobody is shooting at anybody (I hope). All is fair in love and war, they say; but this is neither.

Let's try this instead (from the same dictionary) -- competition: 5. rivalry in business, as for customers or markets.

Wars include saber rattling, squirmishes, battles. Business competitions involve contests, debates, discussions, PR and marketing.

I think much of the contentiousness of the current situation from format supporters of each persuasion can be traced back to (or is at least exacerbated by) the metaphorical use of the term "war" in the media and in forums such as this one.

End the war. Enjoy the competition.

The term "standalone" has been one of the most useless and deceptive terms to date. It has resulted in the following inaccurate claims about "market share" and "player sales".the HD DVD format holds a 74 percent market share in Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Switzerland, citing figures supposedly from market research group GfKThe HD DVD camp was not fazed by the Target decision, pointing out that HD DVD players continue to outsell Blu-ray players

If the media had not used the term "war", I don't think we would see all this fighting in online forums.

'nails' and 'coffin' come to mind...

same with 'punches', 'blows', etc from boxing references.

If I see another 'XXXX has won the war' or 'XXXX is dead' press release I will go berzerk. You know who you are releasing that fake crap.

This isn't so much a buzz word as it is a phrase that is way over used

"(company here) goes (format here)... (different company here) next?"

So in the end, this thread turned into nothing more than people saying what they don't like about the other format, (or the arguments for the other format.) Instead of talking about buzzwords, it's just a thread about arguments people disagree with.

Disagreed, I haven't seen any format bashing. Just words and phrases people think are overused, sure some sides use some of these words more than the other, but there's not really format bashing here.

These are the buzzwords I don't like:

* Look and sound of Perfect (nothing's perfect and it doesn't seem to be grammatically correct)
* Beyond HD
* This has HDMI 1.3 so you'll get billions of colours
* This TV will give you billions of colours
* Region Coding (which is anti-competitive and racist)
* BD+ (who knows what discs will do on a per-title basis or whether they will play)
* "High definition images offer a considerably richer colour palette" - they may offer it but aren't they still using the same 8 bit colour palette that SD-DVD uses? - around 10 million colours not 16 million?
* True Cinema Experience
* Exactly as the filmaker intended
* You'll marvel at the clarity and full-color spectrum of every scene
* Pictures come to life (yeah right)
* HD DVD offers six times the resolution of standard DVD (not when they're describing a UK player, which would be 5 times the resolution)

buzzwords I dislike:

Futureproof
HDMI 1.x
"Content is King"
HDLite (especially when used to describe content in 720p)
Standalone ratios or sales comparisons

Adding unnecessary u's to words like Color & Favorite (j/k) :D

This is brilliant!

Let's get everyone who has bought into HD DVD on one side and everyone who bought into Blu-ray on the other. Then we have them fight it out. Surviving side wins the format war.

My money would be on the Bl-ray side. After all, the millions of PS3 buyers includes a large number of gamers, vastly more than the 360 add on buyers. This, combined with their numerical advantage, would be too much to overcome.

Prices on hardware would have to drop to counter the number of cheap units being sold from the dead Blu soldiers.

Hey, if we're going to call it a format war, let's have a format war!

Oh, people who are format neutral have to play the role of the Red Cross during the conflict.

"Interactive Features"

Who is to say what is interactive and what is mandatory specs ?
hddvd players don't decode dts master audio. Does that mean it doesn't have mandatory specs ?

Buying ringtones and wallpaper is not interactive features to me.

Also "Another nail in the coffin for hddvd" is the funniest one.

"Sharp" image, where...

Sharp can easily mean 'blahish' 1080i/p images that have good--or deliberately boosted--mid-range frequencies/resolutions but lack the highest resolutions possible with 1920X1080--or even far less resolution-wise. Images can seem very clear and crisp from higher-contrast middle resolutions. TV engineer Mark Schubin outlines (http://archive.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?postid=4778947#post4778947) (~ 3/4 down) how the 'shoulder' of a MTF (modulation transfer function) curve can provide the impression of sharpness--although this shoulder typically provides very modest resolutions. He's mentioned that downconverting 1080i/p can provide the appearance of sharpness (larger MTF-curve area) even when downconverted images appear on SD displays (because middle-range resolutions have been enhanced through the downconversion). Consultant Matt Cowan's "Black Paper" (http://www.etconsult.com/papers/Black%20Paper%20Matt%20Cowan.pdf) (page 26 of 36) illustrates how changing MTF-curve shoulders can influence the appearance of sharpness at the same resolutions.

But, presumably, many HD viewers, especially those with new costlier 1080p-capable displays, would prefer 'sharp-looking' images that also deliver the higher resolutions possible with full 1920X1080 resolutions. So...sharp is one of worst HD buzz words because it can potentially mask real ('full') HD quality. -- John
