View Full Version : Need A Clear Answer (monitor/ps3)
GiantRobot494 07-26-07, 02:54 AM Ive done alot of searching and there seems to be alot of factors to look at while buying an LCD monitor to use with a PS3.
So if someone could suggest me a Monitor that does up to 1080p, no stretching, HDCP compliant, guaranteed to work trouble free with the PS3 that'd solve everything.
Or if someone could answer these questions that'd help a lot too.
My questions are:
1) Does the monitor need to be HDCP compliant to play games ?
2) If the monitor does not have a HDMI, I'll need an HDMI to DVI converter correct? Is this all I'll need?
3) Does my computer have to be involved in any way? Or can I just hook the PS3 straight into the monitor?
4) I want a monitor to do 1080p so that'd be like 24" or bigger, I read so the picture doesn't stretch it needs to be able to do 1:1 pixel mapping. How many and what monitors do this?
5) Are monitors that do that almost always HDCP compliant?
6) What contrast ratio is the bare minimum i should accept? Response time?

Price range would have been nice info you could have included. From what I read you can't tell the difference between 1080p on tvs that are below 50". However I have a Westinghouse HD LCD 37" and it works wonderful with the PS3. It has good specs and I picked it up for a fairly good price around $800. It can do all you asked, 1:1 pixel mapping, HDCP compliant, 1080P, has an HDMI port. Some people are dissapointed with the black levels but I think they look just fine. I am not too picky, I think the blacks are rather good better then my last TV. Check out the thread over in the LCD section. There is a massive thread on it with like 7,000 posts. Lots of informative information. If you are looking for a decent LCD with decent specs and performs well with the PS3 at good price check out a Westinghouse 32, 37 or the 42" LCD's. Just my two cents. ;)
TheCrackedJack 07-26-07, 03:24 AM You do know that you won't notice a difference between 720P and 1080P at minuscule sizes like 24", 27" and you would be wasting your money right? If you want 1080P, at least get a 42 inch or bigger screen. Just get a 720P LCD monitor and you'll be set, unless you feel like springing for a bigger size. And you can just use component cable for 720P output, like one from an old PS2 if you have one.
Edit: I have a Westinghouse like the guy above as well, and it's worked out fine. Although I mainly have it hooked up to a DLP projector.
GiantRobot494 07-26-07, 03:27 AM The LCD Monitor I'm asking about is like a computer monitor not like a regular LCD display. just to get things up because it seemed like i confused you guys. or maybe not.
Even if I sit like i normally would infront of a computer screen, i wouldn't be able to tell the difference? So I only really need HDMI if I'm gonna use 1080p?

The westy supports 1080P over component, HDMI and DVI. Also probably not at that screen size. Like I said from what has been said and what I have read you can't tell the difference between 1080P and 720P on anything lower then 50". Unless you are going to use it as a computer screen also.

No.
Much more goes into good picture quality than simple resolution, focus on getting a good 720P monitor if your going small. Yes, HDMI is only required if you want 1080P.
GiantRobot494 07-26-07, 03:42 AM Here's my problem. My dad bought me a PS3 which as you all know is quite an investment. And we have an old HDTV 480p/1080i.... no 720p : (
So I was hoping not to spend too much on a TV, because you know he bought me a 500 gift and don't want to get greedy, so I was looking for a monitor for around $300.
Otherwise I would take your advice and get a regular 720p hd set. Are there any other good/reasonable priced tv's like in the 32" range. It doesn't have to be around $ 300. Just trying to get ideas for future reference.

You need a monitor that supports HDCP if you want to go HDMI out.
GiantRobot494 07-26-07, 04:04 AM Do you know any monitors that have HDMI ports and HDCP ?
ninjachicken 07-26-07, 04:08 AM in the same situation. i want a 24" monitor capable of 1080p and the one i've been eyeing is the viewsonic vx2435. it's still too pricey for me at this point. i'm hoping to pick this one up then later on down the line, getting a 46" 1080p tv of some sort.
Suhnder 07-26-07, 04:10 AM This is the monitor I use:

It's amazing! I think it is one of the, if not the best monitor you can buy for functionality and quality. Other than a HDTV of course.
I got my PS3 on it via HDMI - works perfectly at 1080p, zero problems. Also have a PC on the DVI, a Xbox 360 /w HD-DVD drive on the VGA, and a Wii on the component. Kind of a mini home-theater on my desktop.
The HDMI and DVI are both HDCP compliant. There's no stretching, you can select Full, Aspect, or 1:1 in the menu. Didn't have this option when it first came out, but they fixed it through firmware back in January. Contrast ratio is great, and I can't notice any ghosting or lag. And I'm usually picky about that stuff.
GiantRobot494 07-26-07, 04:18 AM Oohh way out of my range. For that much i'll just buy a tv!
By the way... do you connect the PS3 directly to the monitor via HDMI? You dont need like a computer with a hdmi graphics card or something like that

Is what I had in mind. Its HDCP via HDMI.
Suhnder 07-26-07, 04:25 AM Ah I see your budget is much smaller. :(
The monitor has a HDMI input just like an HDTV so yea, I just plug it in like a TV. No computer necessary. It is the same thing for any monitor with an HDMI input including the one you linked to.
GiantRobot494 07-26-07, 04:31 AM How does 720p look? Any ghosting? ----- PS3 related.

GiantRobot494 07-26-07, 04:46 AM Do you know if the particular one I posted is any good?
Sceptre x22wg-Gamer 22"
Remember that you also need device to take optical audio from ps3.(monitor likely does not have audio out although it may have hdmi input)
PS: i would just buy hdtv since those monitors cost also about 500 - 1k.
GiantRobot494 07-26-07, 05:27 AM Yup its got and hdmi input and speakers (which probably suck) but that can be upgraded later.
I bought a 22'' lcd monitor with dvi and hdmi (hdcp) for $268. Even if the picture is good not great. Atleast I finally get 720p!!
Does anyone have any speakers they recommend?
