View Full Version : Single or Dual Format?

Very simple question (hopefully). With, I believe, over 300 exclusive titles between the two formats and dropping prices, I am curious what percentage of av enthusiasts are remaining "loyal" to one format only.

It's not that I am remaining loyal, its just that I don't want two players.

When I have a nice second display I can move the PS3 to, then a dual format player will probably be my next purchase, assuming it is still necessary.

I'll get a BluRay as soon as the price hits MY price point of $300.

I own players and discs in both formats but I have stopped buying HD DVD discs and stopped watching the ones I already own.

I had been waiting for a full featured blu-ray player. Since it doesn't appear that we'll have one any time soon (still no timeframe for bd-live), I waited until I could find a halfway decent one for less than $500.

I want to be dual, but don't have the money.

Waiting for the day I can get a dual format player for $400.

in this order...

- I have not found any releases on BD that interest me, aside from those that are available via import on HD-DVD (the Prestige)

- I don't care for BDA's marketing tactics

- BD players cost too much, for the little that they can do

- A gaming console should not determine the outcome of a media format

I own an A1 and a Panny BD-10, but I've stopped purchasing HD DVDs, and doubt I will resume. I havent done an exact count, but I have around a dozen and a half HD DVDs and 50ish Blu-ray movies.

I own both an A1 and a Samsung 1200. I have about 63 HD DVDs, and 7 BDs. I'm slowing down my buying, so I'm guessing that I'll probably have about 70-75 HD DVDs and maybe 10-12 BDs (plus the freebies which I probably won't watch) by the end of the year. I mostly use the Sammy for upscaling DVDs.

I own only a PS3 (to me it is not a gaming console). I don't plan on purchasing another player for at least a year, if not two or more. If somehow HD-DVD hangs in there and universal is still exclusive my next purchase will be a dual format player, and this will be no time soon.

Define "loyal"?

I'd be neutral as soon as there's a reasonably priced decently capable player. I have zero use for a game console as a player.

I don't really have any idea. I guess that's why I put it in quotes. I might get rid of it all together, because I just was curious what the breakdown was, nothing more. Surprised already - thought it was going to be about 75% dual format (around here - not the general public)

Only bluray here. Not opposed to buying into hddvd if more studios released on that format. For now, no need to spend the money on the A20 or XA2.

Blu-Ray here. I think HD-DVD is on a path to losing, and have thought such since I bought my PS3 back in March. Heck, that's why I bought the thing.

So I will not buy HD-DVD...I have patience for the movies that are exclusive, and come next month, it's not like I won't have more than enough content to buy anyway with all the movies and games I'm going to buy.

The format war is impeding adoption and must end before things move foward. There will be no future in the losing format. So it makes only temporary sense to be a dual format owner.

I only have Blu-ray, which I consider somewhat superior but not hugely so.

I am perfectly willing for HD DVD to win as long as it does so quickly and things don't drag out. The window of opportunity for adoption is here and we are losing it.

I own both.

I support Blu-ray, and buy the occasional movie on Universal for my HDA2.

Other than freebies, and the Matrix, I don't own a single HD DVD that isn't Universal.

The way I saw it was this. I have too many HD DVD's to just bail on the format, and if I'm gonna keep a player hooked up, I might as well have a selection to play on it. So why stop enjoying movies now?

I could rent... sure, but the problem with renting HD DVD's is they look like they were used to sand wood by the time I get them. So I buy.

Dual format, here. I had the XBox360, so the addon was a no brainer and got me into the market. I've since added a PS3 (used mostly for movies, right now)...

I've found that lately more of my HD money has been spent on BR, but just ordered 4 of each, this week. When a title is released on both formats, I opt for the one with (in this order):
1) the best sound
2) the best extras
3) the best price

Hoping for a dual format future (as that is what I am buying . . . when prices get into the $300 range). Right now I'm happily sitting on the sidelines buying SD DVDs. I suspect DF players won't hit my price point until this time next year (or perhaps Black Friday 2008).

I am currently HD DVD only because I have had a 360 for a few months.

I am looking to buy a PS3 shortly and then I will also be a Blu-Ray supporter :)

I've had both formats but right now and for the foreseeable future I'm blu exclusive. I have no intentions of participating in any of Toshiba's firesales.

Waiting for a sub $250 (non-Sony) BD player....actually have the cash sitting on my desk right now :D

Both formats here. Prefer Blu-ray due to superior player (PS3 vs. XA1) and greater content.

HD DVD only. No current Blu-ray movies that interest me. If Blu-ray wins out I will buy one, but probably still will watch very few movies by the current Blu-ray only studios.

Currently HD DVD only, mainly due to the lack of region encoding and the fact that so far no BluRay exclusives are must haves for me so far.

I have borrowed my brothers PS3 for a couple of the BlueRay only movies which is sufficent for me.

I will go neutral when Toshiba will put into market a dual BD/HD DVD player.

Dual format here also. I prefer HD DVD by a fair amount, but things are looking bleak. I'm still buying dual-format studios on HD DVD in support. It will be sad to see HD DVD go if it loses, but Blu-ray's pretty nice too and will hopefully continue to get better w/ the new profiles.

All but the third statement apply to me as well. Hardware prices are relatively low compared to software prices, so I think it's worth buying the "other" format for those dozen exclusive titles. The real mileage comes with television shows, and I believe it's worth getting both formats for Rescue Me and Heroes which is coming out soon. I also will buy Battlestar without a second thought when Universal announces it.

My question is why someone would buy a dual format player instead of a PS3 and XA2 for cheaper?

Blu-ray only via PS3 here. Should HD DVD turn things around and win the format war, though, I'll be happy to purchase a player.

Have considered purchasing an HD-XA2 off and on if for no other reason than its excellent upscaling, but am philosophically opposed to prolonging a format war that threatens to push both formats away from mainstream adoption. Thus far, my decision to stay with one format hasn't cost me any sleep.

Dual-format.

How else am I going to watch available movies I want in 1080p? What, am I going to deny myself some of my favorite films just because it means getting a single extra component. I love movies too much.

Thanks for all the responses. I think the breakdown is pretty clear. Mods, forgot to put a time limit on the poll - feel free to lock or whatever. I'm going to repeat 1/1/08 and see if there is anf difference.

I agree. I also do not want to own media in a dead format (if that happens) that requires an extra player that needs to be hooked up in my already overflowing cabinet.

I also want a 1080p player which is not the one at $299.
