View Full Version : Target to only carry Blu-Ray?
plazman 08-04-07, 02:45 PM Oh, plazman. Your lies are so easy to debunk (http://www.target.com/gp/browse.html/601-2599472-7552143?ie=UTF8&node=296579011&index=target&field-browse=296579011&rank=pmrank&field-pricebin=%24500-%24999).
Again, "not listed" in your mind doesn't translate to the real world (http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html******sc_fe_l_1_1042122_1/601-2599472-7552143?ie=UTF8&asin=B0009VXAM0).
You mean like these classic PRG lines:
600 titles by the end of the year! Well, only if you count the same releases of a title in all the different countries that we release in.
We're winning in Europe! Well, only if you don't count software sales or the PS3.
We're selling 2 million Toshibas by the end of the year! Well, actually, we mean 1.2 million, but we're 700,000 units away from reaching that goal anyway.
We're releasing Spielberg films! Wait, nevermind, we weren't allowed.
Our specs are finalized! Wait, we have TL51 discs! Oh, and if they ever come out, you might not be able to play them at all in current players.Looks like the FUD that you love to scream about is just as thick over at Toshiba.
And once again, you were proven to be wrong. Just as you were with an insider, and in sales, and as you have been many times before. So, I guess your sig is quite hypocritical, now.

So PS3 60GB does not show up prominantly in any of these search results.
Also, can someone show me what an out of stock item in electronics looks like on costco.com or target.com. I can't find one.....

The 80GB Model shows up in a Blu Ray search. However, none of the Blu Ray key word searches turned up the PS3 60 GB Player....not even a general PS3 search.

Ditto.
Chau808 08-04-07, 02:56 PM ^^ It's funny that the S300 comes up under HD DVD players...
It seems the 60GB PS3 is only sold in bundles online. (http://www.target.com/gp/search.html******sr_ln_4/602-1065689-7122260?ie=UTF8&index=target&field-browse=1038576&field-pricebin=%24500-%24999&field-keywords=ps3)

I typed in playstation 3 in the search and found the 2 bundles. now looks like you can't get the ps3 by itself but that's a long way from not selling the ps3 60gig online at all.
Before making claims like target does not sell the 60gig online to try and counter other people's claims maybe do a bit of looking around first eh?
plazman 08-04-07, 03:17 PM 1. Is Target only BD? No
2. Is Target promoting BD over HD DVD? Not if you go by their search results....
3. Is Target promoting HD DVD over BD? Depends. The xbox add on is priced below MSRP, so buying from Target saves you money. The Sony BD Player is at MSRP, so buying online anywhere else will be cheaper since here in VA Target.com is not exempt from taxes....
4. The price of the Sony BD player is outside the range of their DVD player price range. The xbox add on is not.
So which one do you think they will sell more of?
Wonder why they don't have a PS3 + Movie bundle, or show the PS3 as a BD Player? Why?
MozartMan 08-04-07, 03:25 PM 4. The price of the Sony BD player is outside the range of their DVD player price range. The xbox add on is not.
Is this the "smartest" spin you could come up with?
JBlacklow 08-04-07, 03:25 PM So PS3 60GB does not show up prominantly in any of these search results.Myself and others directed you right towards the PS3 60GB. Here it is again (replace ****** with "/ r e f =" without spaces or quotes):

To recap: Your inability to find a PS3 (60GB or otherwise) in a search ≠ You explicit claim that "The PS3 is NOT even listed as an item you can buy".
Also, can someone show me what an out of stock item in electronics looks like on costco.com or target.com. I can't find one.....In the link above, the bright red letters that say "We're sorry, this item is out of stock."
Is Target only BD? NoSeeing as how the original news was about standalones and the deal wasn't supposed to start until Oct, then I don't know why you're so worried. Maybe it's because Target said you could still get standalones from Target.com, but as of now there is no sign of the HD DVD standalones on Target.com.
Is Target promoting BD over HD DVD? Not if you go by their search results.By my search results, I get the Sony BDP300, the PS3 80GB, the PS3 60GB, PS3 bundles, and 255 movies. The same for HD DVD gets me the 360 addon, the BDP300 (hilarious!), and 218 movies. So I guess the only one that doesn't show more about BD is your search results. Again, the promotion wasn't supposed to start until Oct, so why so worried?
Shug7272 08-04-07, 03:28 PM WOW.. just look at all the HDDVD damage control. Its a awesome sight to behold. I think Plaz finally went off the edge. His last post was so laughable even my mother would know better.

plazman, you're making yourself look bad. type in PS3 in the search box at target.com. The next page will take you to all the relevant matches for PS3. The very first link in the results is "Learn More about Playstation 3." Click that link and it will take you to a page dedicated to PS3. On the very left hand side you will see a column of links. The very first one says "Price reduced! PS3 Now $499.99." If you click that link (or click the image of PS3) it will take you to the page where you can place an order for a 60gb PS3, which just happens to be sold out. Also on the left hand side of that same page, you will see a link: "Consoles+Accessories." Click that link and it will take you to a page where there are two PS3 bundles for sale.
Or alternatively you can navigate using the links on the top of target.com's homepage. Electronics > Video games > Playstation 3.
Your claim that target.com does not sell PS3 has been proven false by several posters, so drop it already.

OK. I stand corrected. I do not shop at Target.com. And I can see how one can navigate from the Learn More about Playstation 3 to the product. However, I did notice that when you type in Playstation 3 into the search criteria it takes you to a page with the $639 bundle offer, but NOT the console itself. In the learn more, it does say it is out of stock...

At the very least Target needs to do a better job of associating the #1 BD Player with the BD format.
At least the #1 HD DVD Player shows up when you type in HD DVD.
http://www.target.com/gp/search.html/601-8414709-8955303?field-keywords=HD+DVD&url=index%3Dtarget&ref=sr_bx_1_1&x=14&y=12
(I also noticed the price is now back up to $179 from $169 a few hours ago).

Also not sure IF Target is more popular with gamers or AV enthusiasts. That could dictate which product sells better....

60gb PS3 doesn't show up in the target.com search results because it is SOLD OUT.
You have to type in Playstation 3 to get the currently in stock models. They are currently out of stock on the 60GB unbundled, so it will not show up in searches for it.
plazman 08-04-07, 04:05 PM I typed in playstation 3 in the search and found the 2 bundles. now looks like you can't get the ps3 by itself but that's a long way from not selling the ps3 60gig online at all.

I apologize. I was mistaken there. My searches of PS3, Blu Ray Player and Blu Ray did NOT bring up the PS3 60GB. I guess I had to type in Playstation 3 to get there. Now if you are promoting a format called Blu Ray I would expect the PS3 to be listed there....perhaps that does not seem intuitive enough for Target.
Yes. they are selling PS3 60GB with game bundles. Guess they don't want to sell the console as a BD movie player only
The only way I could find just the console was via learn more about Playstation 3 - where the console came up as out of stock - but the bundles are available to ship.
So does Target feel that the PS3 is NOT a BD Player?
Do they think the Sony BDP 300 is an HD DVD Player? Since that is where it shows up as well
http://www.target.com/gp/search.html/601-8414709-8955303?field-keywords=HD+DVD+Player&url=index%3Dtarget&ref=sr_bx_1_1&x=19&y=7

You forgot
5. You need to already own an X-Box 360 to make use of the add-on.
JBlacklow 08-04-07, 04:11 PM Yes. they are selling PS3 60GB with game bundles. Guess they don't want to sell the console as a BD movie player only  Why so confused? It doesn't just play BD movies. The PS2, X-Box, and 360 all play DVDs, but you don't see them in the DVD player section. Same concept, not some plot.
So does Target feel that the PS3 is NOT a BD Player? No, they just don't think their customers are so completely clueless as to miss these words right on the webpage:
"Playstation 3 uses Blu-ray technology--a new high definition format--that delivers deeper content than ever before for games, movies, and more...Watch Blu-ray high definition movies in Dolby 5.1 surround sound and Playstation 3 becomes a high-end home theater"
That, and if they're in the store it's mentioned on the box, including a big old logo.
Do they think the Sony BDP 300 is an HD DVD Player? Since that is where it shows up as well
Are they confusing their consumers????No, just pointing them in the preferred direction. :p

A BD player shows up in the results.

Guess not, and apparently Target doesn't consider the 360 an add-on a player either since it doesn't show up in the results for "hd dvd player"

Greg Kettell 08-04-07, 04:15 PM Geez, has Tosh outsold their stock again?
Target has sold out their stock of PS3s (http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/601-3510810-7875337?ie=UTF8&asin=B0009VXAM0) .

wreckshop 08-04-07, 04:23 PM I didn't say it was not possible. I just hadn't seen it. So is costco B&M carrying Tosh or not?
This is what you said in post #216:
I was referring specifically to Costco!
Someone said Costco was eliminating HD DVD Players from costco.com. This is NOT true. Costco AFAIK does not list out of stock items on their web site.
You have been proven incorrect. Costco.com does list out of stock items for sale on its website. The fact that it is no longer listed means it is no longer for sale online. That's not a good thing, is it? Especially considering that costco.com still sells Sony's BD player online.
I didn't say it was not possible. I just hadn't seen it. So is costco B&M carrying Tosh or not?
They still have them at the Costco in Livonia, Michigan....about 10 left as of yesterday , I saw the A2 there when they got the shipment in a few months ago, looked to be about 100 of them, so they sold about 90 of them, not too bad.
They also had the newest Sony BR player there at $449.00, but no demo with it like they had with the A2 a few months ago, just sitting there on the shelf.
Remember, the A2 is about to be replaced by the A3, maybe that is why it is no longer on Costco's website, I would guess they will have the A3 when it comes out.
plazman 08-04-07, 05:02 PM This is what you said in post #216:

No. That is not good news for Tosh if their model will be dropped by Costco. Looks like costco online does not have any A-2 to sell and like someone said, Tosh may be ramping up for the A-3 and all A-2s have been dispatched to B&M stores.....
However, since I do see that all places are carrying the xbox add on drive, it does mean that they will sell HD DVD hardware, which means they will probably sell the standalone players as well. What else can the xbox drive do besides play HD DVD?
There has been NO NEWS reported that I am aware of that said costco is dropping the Tosh players. Just because it is not on their website now does not mean that they will not sell HD DVD standalone players. IF costco or anyone for that matter has said that costco.com does not plan to carry the Tosh A-2 I am more than happy to look at the info......so I stand by my initial position that costco.com will sell HD DVD players.
As for them showing items not in stock. Thanks. I personally have not been able to search for a out of stock product. This was the case last year when I wanted to buy a Panny 8UK Plasma. Costco was selling them, but when they were out of stock they never showed up on their website. That is all. So I assumed that they have a policy of only showing items in stock. Same for Target, a search does not show items not in stock.....
More to the point. To say or imply that target or costco is BD exclusive is stretching the truth rather blatantly. Since they are not....
plazman 08-04-07, 05:06 PM Target has sold out their stock of PS3s (http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/601-3510810-7875337?ie=UTF8&asin=B0009VXAM0) .

Looks to me like the $499 deal is hard to come by since these bundles are clearly aimed at gamers. I would say Target is selling PS3 to gamers and not to movie enthusiasts - who they believe should buy the $499 Sony player. But that can be had cheaper elsewhere. Go figure....
frasersean 08-04-07, 05:09 PM Do they think the Sony BDP 300 is an HD DVD Player? Since that is where it shows up as well

And do they think all those HD TV's are HD DVD players? The most likely answer would be when you type in HD DVD it thinks your putting in 2 words because of the space and shows you items that can do High Def. I know this is not as interesting as what you tried to make it out as but i believe it's the more believable answer.

My point was that Target is not making a big deal about either HD format. It isn't important to them yet....

Wow, a couple more of these. BR fans are all about personal attacks. When the other side starts name calling you know you've won.
Target will sell both HD DVD and Blu-Ray. I think everyone has agreed to that. They will carry one more Blu-Ray player model than they will HD DVD, so yes that is an advantage. If you want to watch HD DVD you can still buy an Xbox360+add-on at Target along with HD DVD movies.
Is Target Blu-Ray exclusive? No.
They will carry one more Blu-Ray player model than they will HD DVD
Of course you could also say that they will carry infinite times as many BD standalones as HD DVD standalones. ;)
dobyblue 08-04-07, 09:52 PM No PS3 on Target.com either! Only xbox 360 and HD DVD add on.
Also, if you factor in intention to sell. The Add on is $169, so discounted $10 from street prices. The Sony BDP 300 is MSRP - which means you can get it cheaper elsewhere....
So you see, Target really wants you to buy the Add-On :)
Hey....PS3 60GB isn't even listed on Target.com. So they have dropped the current PS2 model?
Yeah...I like how the BDA tries to create FUD out of anything....
They have around 220 HD DVD titles and 250 BD titles....
On Target.com you can buy the Sony BDP 300 and the xbox add on. So one player each. You can also buy a 360 online. The PS3 is NOT even listed as an item you can buy. NOW IS THAT NEWS!!!!!!!
Wow - it's not often you see so much FUD in a single post! Congrats dude.
Looks like costco online does not have any A-2 to sell and like someone said, Tosh may be ramping up for the A-3 and all A-2s have been dispatched to B&M stores.....
Maybe Toshiba doesn't like discount clubs: neither costco.com nor samsclub.com carry any Toshiba players at this point.
(Samsclub.com has a 'blu ray players' subcategory for 'dvd players' but no such thing for hd dvd.)
Wow - it's not often you see so much FUD in a single post! Congrats dude.
Which one?
spacejamz 08-04-07, 10:03 PM Is Target Blu-Ray exclusive? No.
I wouldn't be to smug in Target's treatment of HD DVD there...only allowing the 360 stand alone to be sold in stores during the Christmas shopping season isn't any sign of support for HD DVD...
Is retailer promoting HD DVD (that is media worthy)?? Beside Toshiba and Universal, has any retailer or major player in this format war voiced and demonstrated their support for HD DVD recently???
They have around 220 HD DVD titles and 250 BD titles....
That will be more like 166 versus 235.
(If you search for hd dvd without forcing "hd dvd", you pick up things like 'shot in hd, available on dvd' or 'wmv-hd version on dvd' ... Moreover there are a lot of placeholders. My numbers include only these which are listed with a price.)
That's indeed 'only' 40% more BD's than HD DVD's. Far from exclusive. But I wouldn't call it neutral neither ...
