View Full Version : Some props on wallpaper
dpe8598 07-26-07, 11:10 PM I just wanted to give Sony some props on the ability to add your own wallpaper. Not only is this awesome because you can use your own pictures, but it looks like Sony is providing wallpaper downloads on PSN.
What is the best thing about this? Its free. With the other guy, you get nickled and dimed for the wallpapers. I actually don't mind getting nickled and dimed sometimes, but come on, wallpapers should be fun, easy, and free.
Edit: I didnt mean to say you cant get custom wallpapers on the 360 at all. I'm just liking the ability to get them through the web browser on the PS3 and through PSN for free.
joeblow 07-26-07, 11:12 PM So you wanna take the $ outta M$? ;)
I agree; I love Sony's approach to online services.
joe_six_pack 07-26-07, 11:12 PM The thing I like most about the ps3 is that it's very open. Being open has its disadvantages, but for the most part, positive.
examples: hard drive, headsets, wallpapers

Ya, there can be disadvantages. I had some relatives over and they wanted to check out some things on the PS3. So I fired it up, played some videos and demos, showed some pictures, played some music, etc.. Some of them thought it was more like a computer than a game system and they were a bit initimidated by it. I think some people might be more comfortable w/ a less open system with a simple interface and less options. Nevertheless, I couldnt be happier.

Yeah. If you have proprietary hardware like a special hard drive, memory sticks, etc etc, it will have the same functionality as everyone else's device (with the same problems if any). If you dont have proprietary equipment or software, you may run into compatibility issues like with the BT headsets.
I know 360 people that were intimidated by the ps3 when they first purchased one. The "more like a computer than a gaming system" is pretty accurate.
For me, I like the added options. When I wanted to put up wallpapers, I didn't have a USB thumb drive, I did have SD cards, but no way to move the pics on my computer to the card (no PC adaptor). So I just used the DNLA server to move the pics off my PC. I haven't tried it, but I probably could have emailed myself and gotten the pics off the ps3's browser.

Where are they doing this? Not from within the PS store?

Yep, there are 2 Heavenly Sword wallpapers available and they are both really sweet.
jling84 07-27-07, 12:38 AM I know it's very little, but I really appreciated the 2 free wallpapers from Sony. I mean it's not like it was something that was difficult for them to do, but sometimes it's just the little things that count.

Huh, I logged in earlier to grab the HS demo and they weren't there. Now there's the 2 wallpapers and the Vacancy trailer.
ninjachicken 07-27-07, 01:07 AM the playstation website (http://us.playstation.com) has some awesome screenshots of several games that you can use as wallpaper.
What's really nice is the ability to zoom and crop wallpapers. You can zoom all the way in on her face in the Heavenly Sword wallpaper and just use that and the quality still remains excellent. I've been doing that to quite a few different images and you get really neat and unique results.
