View Full Version : Heads Up: Blockbuster is changing their Online-Instore Exchange Program

I know a lot of us use BB Online for HD and Blu Ray rentals, so I thought this would be a good place to post this.

An employee at my local Blockbuster told me that the online program is changing and unlimited instore exchanges will no longer be offered. Instead you will be allowed 5 exchanges per month with each additional exchange costing $1.99 a rental. If you want unlimited exchanges you're plan price will jump to $24.99 a month. All of this is for the 3 out plan, the other plans will have different monthly rental allowances and price bumps for unlimited rentals. The number of rentals you get with your respective online plan will not change. If the barcode on your online rental envelope starts with '8199' (I'm 99% sure that is the number, but maybe slightly off) it is still valid for unlimited exchanges but anything else will count under the 5 a month limit.

The one free a month coupons will also disappear although he said current subscribers MAY be grandfathered in and still get their monthly coupons. The game discount of $5 a month with a BBO return rental is still valid.

He said that we should all receive emails soon about the changes. He looked up the new prices off some official looking Blockbuster documents so this looks legit.

I'm disappointed by this but I can't say I'm surprised as this plan has allowed me to watch a ridiculous amount of movies that would have cost an arm and a leg had rented them for $4.69 a disk.

Boo, they just can't win.

I almost switch to Netflix and they pull me back in my offering BDs locally, now this.

Why not ride the current situation for a year and really hurt netflix?

edit: I am currently using both due to Netflix's superior online offering and BBs local option, not to mention the free game rental.

Well, well, well. This coupled with Netflix lowering my monthly fee means I'm not tempted to switch anymore. Thanks BB!

Any idea when this takes effect? I doubt I'll stay with BB anymore since 5 free rentals isn't really worth the hassle. Hello Netflix.

With the Netflix distribution center being closer (1 day shipping instead of 2), I'll end up with more movies through them.

<sigh> Too good to last. I exchange at least 12 discs a month; it was a great way to watch TV seasons. I'm also not happy with BB online's HD movie availability, and their shipping is slower than Netflix.

Here it is (without pictures like a sidebar):
Dear Darin,

We want to let you know about some changes to our BLOCKBUSTER Total Access™ subscription plans. This information is provided for your reference only – your subscription plan will not be affected by these changes.

Beginning July 26, 2007, there will be a price increase on your current unlimited plan. We will also begin to offer plans which limit the number of in-store exchanges available each month.

As a preferred customer, your plan will not change at this time. Please continue to enjoy your exclusive subscription plan, including no monthly limit on free* movie rentals or discounted game rentals when you exchange in-store, at today's price – far below the published rate available to new subscribers.

At any point, you can log in and review your current subscription plan or see all available plans. Keep in mind that if you want to change your subscription plan at any point after July 26, 2007, your new plan will be subject to prices and terms available at that time.

Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,
Your Friends at BLOCKBUSTER®

I'm on the 3 out plan and I got the email today. I am grandfathered in, so no change at all to my plan. But, even with 5 in-store exchanges, that's not bad. I do about 2 per week so I'd be able to deal with a 5 limit or paying a $1.99 rental for more. I really, really like the in-store option, especially for spur of the moment movie nights.

Here's a recap of the email.

No price increase! Continue at your current rate

Unlimited online DVD rentals delivered to your mailbox

No monthly limit on FREE* movie rentals or discounted game rentals when you exchange in-store

E-coupons good for FREE in-store movie AND game rentals

Rental exclusives – titles you won't find anywhere else

oh well, i guess i'll deal with the lowered netflix rates, as well as the snail mail....If I hadn't joined before and gotten grandfathered in (I changed to this 3 at a time plan from 1 at a time right after the Blockbuster announcement about Blu-ray) I would just limit myself to the 5 exchanges per month or pay a little extra those times. I doubt I'll do more than 5 most months. When you do the exchange they send you another disc too, so the number of movies starts to add up even with the 3 out at a time plan if a person is doing exchanges in store too.

I cancelled mine back in April (watch more in the winter) and I can re-subscribe with the same plan as before:

Your previous plan...

Exactly. This same thing happened with the whole get free games every month deal. I think I was on the 2/month bonus plan when they first started out and they changed it to 1/week with games not included, but I chose to remain on the old plan.

mine is the same plan except the +2, mine is only 1.

MrPorterhouse
07-28-07, 08:58 AM
so how much would you save going over from BB to netflix?
It's not even an option for me. Netflix doesn't have a brick and mortar store that I can visit. This is what makes BBO a superior service for me, and one that I will pay a price premium over Netflix.

If you do not find the in-store exchange attractive, then Netflix can save you $2-$4/month. It all comes down to whether or not you'll use the Total Access or just the mail in service. I'd say, in general, Netflix mail in service is better, but the Total Access BB plan adds quite a different option, and one that I find very nice, especially with the game coupon($7.99) each month included. I would typically rent a few games each month, so that coupon alone makes a huge difference.

swifty7
07-28-07, 09:08 AM
then how come I only get one game coupon a month?

I also have the:
BLOCKBUSTER Total Access Premium
*
$17.99 / month (plus taxes)
3 at-a-time, unlimited
unlimited in-store movie exchanges
+2 FREE bonus Movie or Game Rental E-Coupon / Month

I signed up for BB Online about 2 years ago when they offered the 2 coupons. I believe when they switched to just one e-coupon those of us that already had 2 were grandfathered in. It's the 2 e-coupons that keep me with BB (plus the fact there's a BB about 3 minutes from my house). The way I look at it is I'm paying to rent 2 games a month and can watch all the movies I want for free. :-)

If you're like me and have signed up for just 1 movie/disc out at a time, this won't affect you that much. If you rent 2-3 movies at a time, yeah this makes BB worse of a deal.

Using just mail, I can rent if I'm lucky 10 movies a month. (February is more like 8). So the exchange program lets me get 20/month. Theyre cutting it to 15. I'm hoping in store returns (without getting new titles) will at least speed things up a bit. I suppose being able to return discs on Sunday should help- if I get a disc on Saturday I can return it sunday & (hopefully) get a new disc by Tuesday instead of Wed.

"I received an email stating that my current plan/pricing was changing. When will this happen?

If you joined us prior to May 15, 2007, new plan options and pricing will go into effect on your regular monthly billing date following September 1, 2007. I actually have the 1 disc at a time plan and I generally do about 8 in-store exchanges a month. If they charge me an extra $2.00 for every disc over 2/month I will end up spending about $6 more per month than the Netflix 3 at a time plan. There is no way that is worth it!

I emailed them and told them I was leaving if they don't grandfather me in!

Some people don't realize that the limit for 3 discs at a time is now 5. However, the limit for 2 and 1 at a time is now only 3 and 2 per month respectively. That is just a rip-off!

Wet1
07-28-07, 02:59 PM
Personally, I think they are both a rip-off. Buy the discs if you don't like the plans. ;)

Its not a rip off when you consider what you get. Obviously, there is intense pressure and competition between Netflix and BB. Pricing and service are cirtical for both. BB can offer an addition in-store option that Netflix doesn't have the ability to do. That adds value and/or is worthy of a price premium. BB has been subsidizing their in-store business with the hopes that their Total Access could aggressively grab market share away from Netflix. Well, BB has taken some share and caused some challenges for Netflix. But, at some point, there reaches a breaking point where you have to charge a fair market value and still be able to take share away from your competitors. The unlimited in-store exchange is/was an incredible offer and that just can't be maintained and remain profiitable. Personally, what I would have done at BB is to offer unlimited in-store exchanges per month at $1 per title. I would gladly pay $1 rentals.

I guess I won't be using any online service as in the past year the mailman has mis-delivered my mail at least 8 times (that I'm aware of) and UPS has lost 2 packages because they delivered to the wrong house.

My BB online account back at the beginning of the year was almost canceled because the mailman delivered incorrectly 3 times. They thought I was stealing. If they had in-store unlimited rents I might do that. Mail is too risky.

For everyone who switched from Netflix to Blockbuster, I guess this is the reward. Has BB ever done something nice for its customers, just for the sake of being nice? If BB raises my prices by so much as a dollar a month, then they go bye bye. They just aren't competitive enough with Netflix when considered mail-only, IMO.

Here is what I sent to them after receiving an email that my plan will change and I had to pay more for what I have now or settle for only 5 in store exchanges a month....

Absolutley NOT!

I will not (and I mean NOT!) pay $4 more a month for what I had before. I just began using Blockbuster In-Store Exchanges because all of your franchise stores in my town closed and corporate kept a few open and were participating!! I have only done 6 TOTAL instore exchanges since i joined! and now you want to tell me that I have to limit that to 5???! Not gonna happen. I will immediately (on Aug 1st) cancel my account with you and switch to Netflix. Netflix has faster shipping and a better selection of movies.
The only way I will stay with Blockbuster is if I have exactly what I signed up for in the beginning...$17.99 a month for 3 dvds out at a time and unlimited in store exchanges.
I assure you that this will be Blockbuster Onlines Downfall!!! You cannot compete with Netflix in online movies or shipping!

Here it the response!

Hello Alexandra,

Thanks for contacting Blockbuster Online Customer Care.

I appreciate the time you have taken in sending me an email regarding your concern, Alexandra. Like all retail businesses, we must periodically review our pricing structure. In introducing a wider range of subscription plans, we considered a number of factors including the number of in-store exchanges on a given account. We’re giving our most frequent renters like yourself the option of either continuing with unlimited in-store exchanges at a higher price point or moving to a plan where the number of in-store exchanges is fixed if you'd like to continue with the same rate.

We feel we are still delivering a great consumer value and encourage you to continue your membership by selecting one of the new plans we offer. You can find the details of what is available via "My Account" in the "Subscription Plan" area. Please remember that if you do not select one of the new plans we have to offer before your next regular billing date, we will not be automatically renewing your membership. Thank you very much for your inquiry. If there is anything else I can help you with, please let me know.

Dear ----,

I expect the exact same treatment as ----!

Now here is their response to that:

Hello Alexandra,

Thanks for contacting Blockbuster Online Customer Care.

I am sorry that the recent email we sent you regarding price increase caused you confusions, Alexandra. We have indeed sent our emails to our customers regarding the changes. Some of the email notifications we sent out are just to inform our subscribers of the said change but this does not mean that your account will be affected.

I have checked your account and it shows that you have reactivated on April 04, 2007. Because of your continued patronage, the e-mail was sent to inform you that even though we did have increased our prices, your account will not be affected by these changes.

I hope this email has provided you the information you needed, Alexandra. I appreciate your patience as we work to provide you the best entertainment value. Please let me know if I may be of further assistance. Thank you for your continuous patronage.

I figured it was not to last - must have been to get market share. Funny thing is, even tho I am a Blockbuster member, I only used them for in-store - and used Netflix as my main source of rentals. I never once switched my online business to Blockbuster, although I was starting to consider it. Now that BB is changing this, it firms up my Netflix preference.

Way to go - firing your customers is always a good strategy. I know this thing has probably cost more than they anticipated and they have had to retreat, but perhaps should have staggered the rollback a bit more gently?

It's hard to criticise tho, as more changes within a year might be even worse...

EDITED: Would like to point out that I recognize that they are probably caught between a rock and a hard place on this one. The costs and logistics of moving all those locally returned discs around back to warehouses has got to be VERY significant...

The costs and logistics of moving all those locally returned discs around back to warehouses has got to be VERY significant...It appears the stores simply mail the envelopes for you. By mistake I opened one incorrectly and had to tape it shut. When I did I ended up taping my address on the outside and the next day it showed up in the mail. I figured they would have at least bulk shipped them one way or another.

Well it's official. They are changing charter memberships to the same crappy deal everyone is talking about. I just received an e-mail today stating that on August 31 there will be changes. It wants me to either pick the more expensive 3 rental plan with 5 in-store rentals or look at other plans.

We have introduced a new pricing structure for our lineup of subscription plans.

As a result, the price of your current monthly plan, Unlimited Online DVDs up to 3 at a time plus unlimited in-store exchanges each month for $17.99, will increase to $24.99, effective August 31, 2007.

I didn't see the plan I wanted.... switch to Netflix wasn't listed. Go figure. I am officially asking all my friends I originally recommended BB online to cancel and switch. I call it the F U plan. Let's see how many angry customers subscribe to that plan.

Yea I received the email below today. Basically it asked me to pick from the three crappy new plans or to cancel. I was actually impressed that they had the "cancel" option. They are basically throwing in the towel and giving up. It will be interesting to see NetFlix business absolutely sky rocket and Blockbuster will probably declare bankruptcy by the end of the year. Oh well, BB was a good deal while it lasted and I am sure I will enjoy netFlix just as much.

Due to changes in our subscription plan pricing, your current BLOCKBUSTER Total Access™ plan, Unlimited Online DVDs 1 at a time plus unlimited in-store exchanges each month for $9.99, will no longer be available at the current price.

You will be moved to our new plan that includes Unlimited Online DVDs 1 at a time plus up to 2 free* in-store exchanges for $9.99. This plan will not include an e-coupon for in-store DVD and/or game rentals. The new subscription plan and pricing will go into effect on your regular monthly billing date following August 31, 2007.†

In addition, exclusively for BLOCKBUSTER Total Access customers, we have introduced in-store movie rentals for $1.99* per movie should you need more than the in-store exchanges included in your plan.

If you don't feel this plan is right for you, please feel free to take advantage of one of these other options:

I just received the email also...in order to keep what I have now it will cost me $7 more per month What pisses me off even more, is that every BD or HD DVD title I have in my Queve is always stating Very Long Wait...and to top it off my local BB doesn't even carry BD or HD DVD I might just hit the cancel button.

Already cancelled. 15 friends also cancelled upon my request. I've sent out a global e-mail to our 3000 employees pointing out the changes as a community service bulletin.

I may not matter by myself, but the power is with the people.

Got the notice today. I'm going to finish up Nip Tuck season 3, use my last game coupon and cancel by the 31st. Hello Netflix.

Canceled already and signed up for a more expensive plan with Netflix. I wrote them a nasty gram in the cancellation request. They didn't respond. I guess they really don't care about keeping their customer base. So what percentage of BB's business do you think they will loose this month? 30%-40%? That has got to hurt an already awful bottom line!

I hope they go bankrupt and I used to work for them!

I suppose they put a marketing spin on and call the plan "LIMITED" TOTAL ACCESS!

To be more precise: "LIMITED" TOTAL ACCESS and (SORT OF) END of LATE FEES!

Ok, enough of my whining, I've already switched

Oh what the heck, one last correction:

especially with the game coupon($7.99) each month included. I would typically rent a few games each month, so that coupon alone makes a huge difference.

Sorry, but just so people know, unless you are one of the lucky few who got "grandfathered" in, the game coupons/instore ecoupons are no more. I posted my official response from BB in the Blu-ray forum.

I was with both BB and Netflix for about a year each...got all my old movie watching out of the way (at least for a few more years). I'll just hit up redbox for now (this along with the fact that 1/3 of my mail gets mis-delivered by the post office).

Cancelled my Total Access membership yesterday when I got the email.

Upped my Netflix plan to the 4 at a time option.

Basically I was using both Netflix and Blockbuster even though Netflix has a much better online service because BB had two advantages:

1 - Free monthly game rental
2 - unlimited in-store exchanges

Those are the only reasons I was still using Blockbuster, and they took them away.

Thanks for helping me down off the fence Blockbuster.

Wow, i got a nice email from blockbuster too.
Lol at "we hope you are enjoying BLOCKBUSTER total access"

I'm going to reply, I am enjoying it so don't change my plan #$@ers

Dear Ricardo,

We hope you're enjoying BLOCKBUSTER Total Access™!
There are some changes to our subscription plan lineup that introduce a new pricing structure and new plans which limit the number of in-store exchanges. As a result, your current plan will no be longer be available at the current price.(Unlimited Online DVDs up to 2 at a time plus unlimited in-store exchanges each month for $14.99)

We'd like to extend you a new plan that includes Unlimited Online DVDs 2 at a time plus up to 3 free* in-store exchanges for $14.99. In addition, exclusively for BLOCKBUSTER Total Access customers, we have introduced in-store movie rentals for $1.99* per movie should you need more than the in-store exchanges included in your plan. Your new plan will go into effect on your regular monthly billing date following August 31, 2007. If we don't hear from you by August 31, 2007, we will automatically move you to the new BLOCKBUSTER Total Access plan referenced below as "Your New Plan".

Actually, one more correction you need to make.

NO ONE IS GRANDFATHERED IN NOW!!!!!!!!!!!

As of Friday BB has removed the old plans all together. They will see some pretty impressive losses from this policy change. I fully expect them to go bankrupt in the near future!

DID something change with the in store exchanges? I'm now showing that I get 99 exchanges per month. Which would esentailly be unlimted since there is no way I could get that many titles in the mail in one month to exchange.

It looks like it. My account reflects 99 freebies as well. Looks like unlimited changes are back. This should help Blockbuster out. They have responded with lower in-store prices and now that Netflix increased their prices, Blockbuster has responded with an increase in service by giving us unlimited exchanges (at least thats what it is showing).
