View Full Version : Led Zeppelin's 'The Song Remains the Same' on HD DVD
theone2 07-27-07, 02:41 PM Zeppelin's 'The Song Remains The Same' Coming to HD DVD, Blu-ray Disc (http://dvd.themanroom.com/dvd-newsview.php?id=643)
Warner Home Video has announced Led Zeppelin's 'The Song Remains the Same' feauring all 14 songs from the original concert will be released on HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc on November 13, in conjunction with a new two-disc CD set and DVD set.
'The Song Remains the Same' will be presented in remastered 1080p video encoded via VC-1 and a newly-mixed and remastered Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track. No mention is made in the announcement of a lossless audio option being included, which would be a big blow to Zeppelin HD adopters anxiously awaiting this release if ultimately excluded.
Extra features will be comprised of 40 minutes of added bonus material, including never-before-released performance footage of "Over The Hills And Far Away" and "Celebration Day"; plus performances of "Misty Mountain Hop" and "The Ocean"; a rare 1976 BBC interview with Robert Plant and Jimmy Page; vintage TV footage from the Drake Hotel robbery during the New York concert stand; and a Cameron Crowe radio show.
Pricing should be the same for both the HD DVD and Blu-ray versions, though we don't yet know what that will be. Check back regularly for high resolution cover art as its made available.
ultradk 07-27-07, 02:56 PM Nice! :)
vladi123456 07-27-07, 03:01 PM I wonder if they would remaster the other Led Zeppelin DVD in hi def? Mine got stolen, and I've been waiting for the HD version :)
This makes my day. I do hope for the best sound treatment of course.
This is really cool. As poor a performance by the band as 'The Song' was, it's nevertheless a must have for me. I've seen the film countless times. The two disk set which was released in 2003 on the other hand is far superior in terms of performance.
Would love to get an HD version of the 2003 disks as well.
Unequivocally my favorite band.
jus10 said 07-27-07, 03:44 PM this is mine! awesome, can't wait for this to come out
DrCrawn 07-27-07, 03:49 PM I never bought this on DVD for some reason despite being a huge zep fan as a teenager. Glad I waited 'cause this HD DVD will be mine, oh yes. Hopefully Warner does TrueHD.
Awesome! Now all we need is the Stones' Gimme Shelter in HD
WOW!
I expected Pink Floyd, "The Wall" long before this one.
Great show, but I will rent before buying. I need to see the encode improvements. I never thought the DVD was that clean.
I hope a good transfer!!!!
LordofDoubleD 07-27-07, 06:51 PM Awesome!!!
MikeAnderson 07-27-07, 07:30 PM Great news. Now I can retire my beat up DVD version. Hoping for some kick ass audio...
Great news, BUT we need some lossless audio PLEASE!
WTF?!?!?!?!?!?!
No Way!!!
This is GREAT for HD Disc!
Very pleased w/this release, makes me feel like a kid again.
Yeah, L O S S L E S S ! ! !
Trackman 07-27-07, 10:53 PM Ugh, after How the West Was Won, it is going to be difficult to get excited about Song Remains, even in HD.
zero_zep 07-27-07, 11:03 PM Finally a concert in high def from a band that I like.
eapleitez 07-28-07, 01:50 AM I hope Rush will bring out there stuff on HD DVD in the future.
cajieboy 07-29-07, 02:11 AM There's a good reason why the world loves this music after over 30 years!
ChrisW6ATV 07-29-07, 04:17 AM Finally a concert in high def from a band that I like.
My thought was "Finally, a concert in hi-def by a band during their prime". I saw previews of the Cream HD disc and those guys look scary in hi-def. :)
I am waiting for a home release of "Genesis Hi-Def Live". It has been released in standard-def as "The Invisible Touch Tour" and "Live at Wembley Stadium".
Zeppelin provides an interesting study in artistic assessment and criticism. When Zep came on the scene...they were despised...I mean hated by virtualy all critics and musicologists.
Bonham was called "hamfisted", Plant was imitating Joplin, Page was sloppy and excessive.
On top of that they stole old blue's riffs, lyrics and music.
Today, Critics and historians are far far kinder. Sure they plagiarized some stuff (and they paid for it in the 80's) but wow...Bonham was an A-bomb on analog drums, Plant exquisite at his best, Page a genius and Jones rock solid.
Listening to bootleg live concerts is quite a treat. When they were on...WOW! When they were bad...yikes!

Ginger Baker looked REAL scary in 1968!! He actually looks better now than in his 20's.
A piece of trivia. When Springsteen was looking for a drummer for his band back in the early 70's, the ad he placed included his requirements for a drummer and added "No Ginger Bakers need apply".
FrancescoP 07-29-07, 04:36 AM No lossless audio?
I'm in for this one.
Now if we can just get "Concert for George" on HD DVD
Michael

Not despised by their target audience...namely ME at 17 years of age!!
it's been a long time ago...but I can't recall ANY negative publicity from Rolling Stone or other press at the time. In fact, just the opposite. In my recollection, Led Zeppelin was a hit group from the getgo.
PS: Let me add that their very first album went platinum, and was quickly followed by their second album that set the world on fire!...despised??..maybe by Dick Clark, but not by everyone else. Remember, at that time period, most people in the "under 30" crowd got their music from music stores and NOT from the lame radio stations playing 45's.

really? I thought that rolling stone was notorius for lukewarm reception of zep albums. You may certainly know a lot more than I do (I was late to the party) but I though they were a popular, but not necessarily critical early success.

whityfrd 07-29-07, 11:28 AM zeppelin was groundbreaking from the getgo. one of the earliest bands to combine rock and roll and blues. probably the first to do it successfully imo. the performance of "celebration day", page broke two guitar strings and still managed to pull off one of the most frantic guitar solos i ever heard. respect.
MickeyDora 07-29-07, 11:35 AM Listening to bootleg live concerts is quite a treat. When they were on...WOW! When they were bad...yikes!
I think I have every single bootleg out there. I transfered all of them to mp3 when I realized that some of the tapes and vinyl were beginning to rot. Now they sit on one of my favorite playlist on my iPod.
Bud-man 07-29-07, 12:34 PM As a HUGE Zep Fan,when TSRTS was filmed 1973 at MSG, Page was at his best of his career, watch is fingers fly thru riff after riff during Dazed and you'll see why!, it's still my favorite to crank up after a few brew's and it will be awesome to see a full unedited version, esp when Jimmy starts to get fired up and they cut it to "Have you been to San Francisco"
Also after that scene it's great to see Jonsey look over to Bonham and say "oop's" when there trying to stay in time with each other!!
I used to play the album everyday in my bedroom in the 70's which i still have all scratched and worn.
This is show was proshot very nice with 35mm camera's, hence the reason they can transfer to HD, most other shows after were very dark and in poor quality after yr's of storage.
I've read months earlier about the whole MSG concert without all the imaginery and visions would be released, but i didn't expect it in HD!!
After reading the article it appears that it's just a HD conversion of the old fim with all the crap and some added song's like The Ocean which is already on the 2003 2 DVD set anyway, i'm not getting my hopes of raw concert footage without all the added scenes.
I'm totally pumped!!

Thanks for the link...very interesting. Well, I for one & along w/all my friends at school, etc. were NOT "late to the party". From the very beginning we all could not get enough of Led Zeppelin, from wearing down the grooves on our LP's at home to playing Zepplin I & II 8-Tracks in our cars so loud you could hardly drive at the same time. AM/FM Radio stunk badly at the time, and would not play any songs over 3 minutes. Heck, even "Hey Jude" had it rough at first on radio, and that was right in the middle of Beatlemania. Radio meant very little to us, but Record Stores were a big hang out. As for Rolling Stone, you read they trashed Cream & Eric Clapton...go figure.

Chris West 12-10-07, 03:30 PM Revived this thread as tommorow is the delivery date and i'm in que with netflix, so Wed will the date i get it.
let's hear any reviews over the DVD that came out a month ago.
tai4de2 12-10-07, 08:16 PM Hidefdgiest.com moved this from "in stores this week" to "postponed with no release date". WTF?
That is odd. Maybe they want to add some footage of todays show in England! I dunno. I know I've already ordered it, even though I've already got it on SD-DVD.
Yeah heard that earlier. Postponed for both formats. Really sucks.
Funny that they would cancel as of this afternoon, i mean the stores would have the stock in by now and it was already released on DVD!!! RRRRrrr!
DiCecco 12-11-07, 08:04 AM DVD Empire has one HD-DVD in stock and unknown amount of Blu-ray in stock as of 8:00AM.
replayrob 12-11-07, 09:23 AM Strange....
Best Buy will let you order it from the warehouse- no mention of backorder or pre-order. Says "Usually leaves our warehouse in 1 business day"
Amazon says- "Availability: This title will be released on December 31, 2010. Pre-order now!"
I was really excited to get TSRTS today locally but, typical cluster F**K where Zeppelin is involved :D:D:D:D I guess some things never change! I could only imagine the chaos that would ensue if they decide to go on a world tour
For those who have forgotten (or youngsters who just don't know) here's a little info on the selling power of one of our favorite bands from back in the day...

1969 Led Zeppelin II - 12x Platinum
1970 Led Zeppelin III - 6x Platinum
1971 Led Zeppelin IV - 23x Platinum
1973 Houses of the Holy - 11x Platinum

Malcolm_B 12-11-07, 11:22 AM And I thought I would be playing an HD edition of the Hammer of the Gods in my HT for Christmas. Grrrrrr!
I got it on HD-DVD last week, so it seems it was shipped to some retailers at least before it was withdrawn. I wonder if there is something wrong with it.
diggumsmax 12-11-07, 11:42 AM Looks like it has been delayed to sometime in 08 (no date given).

swanlee 12-11-07, 12:31 PM My BLU-RAY order for this just shipped from DVD Empire. I think they had only 1 HD-DVD version in stock which is why I got the BLU version. If it truly is pulled I may have a collectors item on my hands.
hidefpaul 12-11-07, 01:08 PM Hey guys, the wife just picked this up for me yesterday.:)
Apparently the sales manager chased her as she was leaving the store and begged her to return the item, offering her the full refund and any other HD disk for free.
She politely said no and walked away. He asked her not to mention where she bought it!
I have it and will try to take some pics tonight!
Will comment tomorrow on my thoughts & impressions, for what its worth.;)

Just got delivery confirmation on my copy from the UK. After hearing about it being pulled I ordered yesterday from Amazon.uk. Around $38 delivered, but this title is worth it for me. I don't want to wait for a possible US release next year.
Petey Parker 12-12-07, 10:00 AM I ordered my copy the other day from Tiger Direct where it says it ships in 24 hours. It hasn't shipped yet though.
Chris West 12-12-07, 10:01 AM I just ordered from Amazon .uk also, no sense in wasting gas driving around looking for a store like above poster did, didnt say were he lives or bought it.
moose_man 12-12-07, 10:59 AM So has anybody found out why there is a recall or shortage state side? I ordered from Amazon in early November and the expected ship date hasn't changed or anything, still says it was expected to ship yesterday (11th).
Is their a huge demand for it in the UK? And because our developmentally disabled president has managed to make the dollar the equivalent of toilet paper when compared to the pound, did the studio ship everything to the UK to make a killing?
Oh boy... I think my coworker is going to upgrade to HDM now, regardless of the format. He is a MASSIVE Led Zep fanatic (you could even call him a fanboy) and just yesterday he was asking me about concerts in HD since I explained to him about the HDM having better audio as well since it's not just about the video. :)
guyutemsg 12-12-07, 11:41 AM Just got an email from amazo.com delaying this until after the new year. Expected date of arrival at amazon is 1/8/08.
Just got an email from amazo.com delaying this until after the new year. Expected date of arrival at amazon is 1/8/08.
Well that jives with the "up to 4 week delay" that Warner sent out in the e-mail that I got.
Gixxxerman001 12-12-07, 01:11 PM Seems like it's an American thing.
I got mine a week ago on HD DVD here in the UK (impatient HD DVD owners can import, surely?).
It's a fantastic disc & I'm enjoying it very very much
(Toshiba HD EP35 using analogue outputs).
The audio isn't quite the amazing quality of the Motorhead HD DVD 'Stage Fright' I bought but it's still wonderful.
I have to agree, I'd love to see more work by the heavy rock bands/artists like Rush, AC/DC, Soundgarden, Joe Satriani, The Cult etc etc treated to the new audio standards.
....and if more of the classics like say Thin Lizzy or Deep Purple could be properly re-energized like this Led Zeppelin show then I'd be a very very happy man.
(btw does anyone know if there's anything been said about releasing the recent London O2 show?
Recorded and then put out on state-of-the-art high def audio would be something I'd be glad to pay for.
Here's hoping.)
What's weird is that the disc was pulled, not that it was delayed. It seems that stores that had them had to send them back, which is very different than the usual push back of release dates we see too often. I'm really curious to find out what's going on here. I'm glad I imported. For those on the fence about importing, remember that HP & the Goblet of Fire was released in the UK a year ago and is only just coming out in the US now. People were expecting that one "any day now" for quite a while.

My understanding is that they recorded the show for a DVD release in the new year. You can almost be sure it was recorded in HD as it would be idioitic not to. Now whether it will be released on HD or BR is another question entirely.

narcopolo 12-12-07, 09:27 PM The cheapest I can get it from barnes and noble even with discount code X7A7N3M is around $30 due to shipping (free shipping gets removed after the discount code is applied) and sales tax.
Don't think I care about Led Zeppelin quite this much. May as well wait and get it later.
jeffrey r 12-12-07, 09:44 PM Not sure which code you tried, but here are a couple: N6R7C4J for 25% off; and P3D8J3L for 20% off. The 20% off coupon, paired with my member discount, brought it down to about $21.70 shipped. It was actually cheaper using the 20% coupon than using the 25% coupon once free shipping was taken into account.
Gixxxerman001 12-12-07, 09:51 PM Is there a noticeable improvement in PQ, as compared to the DVD?
- I'd say yes, very much so.
I'm not a great fan of the 'imagination' scenes (they were a little cheesy then nevermind now) but the show itself is killer IMO.
It's also worth bearing in mind that this is the restored complete show whereas previous versions were not, parts were cut.
I've read Jimmy Page saying that they had to practically scour the globe to find prints/copies in sufficiently good enough quality to clean up, restore & use, but I'd say they have pulled it off and produced something well worth buying.
I admit I'm a big Led Zep fan but I'd say it's a must have.

So your saying the HD-DVD is the whole show WITHOUT the Fantasy scenes?
Are you REAL?
It would be a dream come true to see that, i've read that the scenes are there due to missing footage by a stoned film crew, so they added the fantasy scenes to make up for stopped or lost footage.
Gixxxerman001 12-13-07, 07:42 AM So your saying the HD-DVD is the whole show WITHOUT the Fantasy scenes?
- No.
Where did I say that?
Are you REAL?
- I think you've misunderstood me.
It would be a dream come true to see that, I've read that the scenes are there due to missing footage by a stoned film crew, so they added the fantasy scenes to make up for stopped or lost footage.
- I would give that the status of 'urban myth'.
(edit to add - OK, after watching again I'm quite prepared to believe this one; there are certain points in the movie where the framing of the action on stage is, er, 'eccentric' to say the least! )
The truth (in as much as I've read it) is that the old release was not the complete show.
This version is.
But yes it still contains the fantasy scenes.
So what is the verdict on this?? Has it been pulled or not?
Chris West 12-13-07, 09:30 AM that sucks, i was hoping they had all the footage, your the one that said it was all there, you big C@#k tease! :)
"It's also worth bearing in mind that this is the restored complete show whereas previous versions were not, parts were cut."
Then i'm sure it's no different than the dvd thats already out for a month, also did they add in the concert the songs that were on the 2nd dvd?, synced it into the original as 1 complete show?....is that what you mean?
Or does the extra songs as a menu in the extra section?
Petey Parker 12-13-07, 09:37 AM they cant charge u until its shipped
In theory a good company would do that but after my order hadn't shipped right away I did some looking around for reviews on Tiger Direct and found several where people had their Paypal accounts charged before their item was shipped. They were a couple years old though so maybe the company has improved since then. I'm not sure since this is the first time I tried to order from them. Better to be safe than sorry.
Chris West 12-13-07, 09:42 AM Well my amazon UK shipped today says DEC 20th delivery, couldn't cancel it, and i cancelled the pacific dvd order as it said backorder, i also have on order a copy from barnes and noble, i'll sell either on ebay if they come.
Petey Parker 12-13-07, 10:21 AM Decided to try with B&N after giving up on Tiger Direct. Fingers crossed. Came to $26.45 with the 25% off since I don't have a membership.
Petey Parker 12-13-07, 11:11 AM And its already ready to ship so it looks like its still in stock.
ken52787 12-13-07, 11:17 AM So has anyone figured out what is with this disc? Seems like it's supposed to be pulled, but there are still plenty of discs in circulation. If it was supposed to be pulled, it'd be interesting to know why. I put it in my blockbuster queue and got the disc 4 days before street date (which is odd considering blockbuster never gets HD DVDs to me in any sort of hurry)
replayrob 12-13-07, 11:18 AM Just ordered from DVD Pacific, in stock and a good price... $19.76

FWIW (this was posted in the Blu Ray section by Slim GoodBooty)
One more time. The discs have the same content and all three (4 actually) have been recalled from distributors. The remaining DVDs will remain at retail until sold, but no further discs will be shipped. The HD discs were never supposed to have been in stores.
So are they never coming out?
If that's the case then I need to order from someone before they are gone
Gixxxerman001 12-13-07, 12:24 PM that sucks, i was hoping they had all the footage, your the one that said it was all there
- Ah, ok, I can see how you might take it that way.
What I meant was that the new disc has the complete set, the previous release was not the complete show.
Both have the fantasy scenes (played over the band playing).
, you big C@#k tease! :)
- Flattery will get you, er, everywhere, um, probably. ;)
Then i'm sure it's no different than the dvd thats already out for a month
- Aha, this also goes a long way to clearing the misunderstanding.
I didn't know there was a DVD release recently
(sorry, I just saw they had a lot of new material coming out & when I saw HD DVD I fixed on that as my next buy)
Chris West 12-13-07, 12:30 PM So Gixxer, when you watch the HD version the missing songs like Celebration Day and Misty Mt Hop are in the movie without going to the extra's?
ken52787 12-13-07, 02:32 PM So Gixxer, when you watch the HD version the missing songs like Celebration Day and Misty Mt Hop are in the movie without going to the extra's?
They weren't in when I watched it. I had to go to the extras to see those songs. They also didn't appear to be in HD. I had no way of being sure of the resolution, but they were very soft.
Gixxxerman001 12-13-07, 03:32 PM So Gixxer, when you watch the HD version the missing songs like Celebration Day and Misty Mt Hop are in the movie without going to the extra's?

They are in the extras (which aren't in HD on my UK version).
But it is the complete Madison set on the disc, that's the point, surely?

it never said "back ordered" I ordered on 12/11 and it just said "in process", called today confirmed it is the HD DVd version, was told yes and that it would ship today, so it looks like they do have it in stock and are selling it
bordo32 12-14-07, 12:19 AM I bought my one at Best Buy today, it was not on the shelve, it was on the cart where they keep all the new items. Only one pcs was left, a cashier had problem to ring it. It was not any stickers, labels on it, the SKU was not on the their system, a manager just entered a description and guess estimated price manually.
I have also ordered other copy, just in case, on BarnersNoble bookstore. They still have them.
Hope it helps.
sbrown712 12-14-07, 01:40 AM I saw this at Brandsmart the other day and almost picked it up. Looking forward to getting reviews from you guys.
The first real concert I went to was Zepplin, back in '72 or '73, can't remember for sure, too many dead brain cells? I do remember how great the show was. Watching Paige play the guitar with a violin bow was incredible. I was hooked and have been a fan ever since.
Guess who the opening act was........... Santana. Those were the days. I think the tickets were real expensive too, pretty sure it was about $15.

So what is it what Warner caused to pull the disc?

Thanks to some tips here, got a copy on its way.:)
bordo32 12-14-07, 09:45 AM Late last night I opened my disk and was surprised, the security device, the plastic strip, was attached to the bottom side of the disk, not on the surface of the case but on the disk it self.
It was attached on the working surface of the disk.
I have removed it carefully, but still some peaces of sticky glue left.
I will try to clean it gently, will se what happens.
Just an idea, but I guess it might be the reason why the disks were recalled.
It might be many of boxes-disks were assembled like that.
The manufacturer finally found it and recalling the disks.
narcopolo 12-14-07, 11:28 AM I saw the SD DVD version at a store last night but no high definition versions. Were the SD DVDs recalled also?
Yes, I believe all were re-called. Looks like I'm getting a copy from DVD Pacific as well. I went to 5 stores in the greater Vancouver area and couldn't find one copy. Some guy has a HD-DVD on the bay for $65:eek:

the blu-ray is quite a bit cheaper there.
I ordered by HD DVD since it qualified for free shipping. I would have had to pay shipping for ordering the blu-ray since the order would be under $25, plus I can play the HD DVD on my laptop computer if I want, which is a slight bonus (very slight, considering the sound isn't very good with the laptop computer).

Slim GoodBooty 12-16-07, 01:34 AM the sd versions have been out for a while and were not recalled.
All the discs have been discontinued and the reason that the HD copies are tougher to find is that the "recall" happened before it was supposed to hit retail. There obviously were some out there and retailers decided to sell them anyway, even though Warner reps tried to collect them. At any rate, this disc is going to be buried next to the ET games and will not be rereleased in it's present form.

"Not be rereleased in it's present form?"
Does anyone know what that means? I read that one extra looked to be SD, was it suppose to be in HD? Maybe that's why it was recalled.
Intersting to note that a few know enough that it was recalled, and for some reason not giving us the answer as to why it was recalled.
What is suppose to be on this disc that's not on there now? Or what is on the disc that's not suppose to be on there.
I've seen this movie on HDNet movies before, so maybe the HD copy for home video is from an old HD trasfer. Do they have a newer and better HD trasfer to use for HD home media?

And again for a split second a minute later. I think it may be something wrong with it because the bitrate dropped from around 2MBps to 800kb when the sound went out, and went back up when it returned. Yep I'm there, there's a wire freak out picture in my sig tag. Look for the guy keeping his elbows in while clapping slow. Hey I owned a 68 Les Paul Custom and same time frame Marshall 100w Super Lead Stack. $500 for the new Les Paul at Manny's, $900 for the new stack at Sam Ash in Brooklyn. I could play like Jimmy Page, but even tuffer could sing like Robert Plant, somebody had to do it. Think Black Dog, Song remains the same. But I think album 1 is my favorite (How many more times) :)

Everything I've read points to a distribution issue being the cause of the delay not an actual problem with the disc.
Hi all --
From what I understand, the title is only delayed due to internal distribution issues, i.e., Warner couldn't fulfill all retail orders on time, so rather than be unfair and favor certain retailers, the street date is being shifted so all will be able to stock at the same time.
So the title will be "officially" released soon I believe, and if you can snag a copy early, more power to ya! I know the majors like Amazon and DVD Empire didn't seem to get theirs...
P
From what Warner has told us they had distribution issues with their new plant on the title, they've been having problems with this plant since they started using it. This plant is the reason some Warner titles have shipped later than expected to both retailers and customers. Most likely a new release date for the title will be announced next week once Warner knows the issue is resolved. Since the high-def versions contain the same material as the already released DVD it wouldn't seem to be a legal issue about material that shouldn't have been used on the title since the DVD hasn't been recalled.
Distributors have not been told to ship back their already received inventory of the title, which is good news. We only received the Blu-Ray version of the title, none of the HD-DVD so far, which seems to be the case for most retailers & distributors.
Unherdable 12-18-07, 06:26 PM Everything I've read points to a distribution issue being the cause of the delay not an actual problem with the disc.
Well, there is definitely a problem with the BD version of the disc. Several people are reporting the audio drop outs on at least two different BD hardware platforms. Too much of a coincidence for me. But, sounds like the HD-DVD is all good, so lucky you! :o
(may be a bug in the Dolby TrueHD decode on the BD players that maybe rectified in a future firmware update, but this is pure rampant speculation)
replayrob 12-19-07, 10:09 AM yes.. watched last night with high quality headphones and didnt shut it off until 3 in the morning thats how good it sounds......

49er fan 12-19-07, 05:04 PM Got a Blu-ray and HD DVD coming in. Which one should I keep? I want the version with the better audio. I paid ~$6 more for the HD DVD...
Just return the HD-DVD since they both have the same audio and video, why pay more?
Bud-man 12-19-07, 05:47 PM Well guys got the HD from BN today and also coming is Amazon UK and Family video, well you know we can't get enough Zep!
First thing i notice is the sound is better, not all ehco'ey like the DVD, also another problem is when switching audio from DTS to 2:1 stereo my reciever, Yammie HTR-5450 shows no difference unlike the DVD does go to 2:1
Please tell me if thats the problem or my setup for some reason, possibly the reason of the recall?
I'm watching on a Optoma HD70 92" DIY screen in my basement, 10" yammie sub with Fluance HTB Surrounds...ole lady's at the Hannah Montana concert so the boy's will party!!
Hey Guitarman!, a guy i used to work with, Eugene, is in the movie too, at the end of SIBLY you see him with black curly hair and aviator style glasses sticking his tongue out!, i worked with him in '91-93 and he said he was at the concert.
Bud-man 12-19-07, 05:56 PM Update....... there is def a diff in the audio from 2:1 to 5:1 DTS, just my reciever is not reporting it...weird.
Maybe the A2 brainfart?
replayrob 12-20-07, 10:23 AM Well my copy arrived yesterday from DVD Pacific :D:D:D
I started playing it last night around 10pm. I forgot about the whole 11 minute gangster/intro bit so guess I had the volume up pretty loud at that point ( I also have a cold and my ears are stuffed up too). Once the actual concert started- my 11 year old daughter came in from sleeping in her bedroom and said "could you please turn that down! it's louder than the band across the street". Our neighbors 17 year old son's has garage band that's pretty loud and it annoys my 10 and 11 year olds when they practice out in the driveway during the summer.
So, it was almost like when I was a teenager living at home- I used to get yelled at for listening to Zeppelin too loud back then by my parents, and I still get yelled at now for listening to Zeppelin too loud- but now it's from my daughter!
Love it!! :D:D

There has been some discussion on this is the other forums. It appears that those who select PCM over HDMI and the Dolby TrueHD track are seeing the dropouts.
Anyway, I got my copy on HD-DVD, and watched the whole thing. No dropouts. Oh well. Now I got THREE copies of the same dang concert!

Found one at Future Shop in Toronto today.
Man, I hate you for that. I've been debating getting this. It's on order with Warner, but I'm starting to think it won't ever get released. They took it off their site for ordering and Amazon shows 2010 pre-order date.
The Led Zeppelin release is great. A bit grainy as usual, but acceptable. I received the HD DVD a few days before Xmas, together with Jimi Hendrix and ABBA, from amazon.co.uk.
Xploited now has it (it's the US release).
Borders in Redmond, WA has it right now as well.
Unherdable 01-05-08, 11:14 AM If anyone is still looking for this title, and lives in the Dallas areas, Premier Video on Mockingbird (east of 75) has a brand new sealed copy at a normal price.
Since this is a Warner release, don't hold out any hope on this one ever being released in the US.
However, the HD-DVD is still the version to get, because it has a perfect Dolby TrueHD soundtrack, whilst the blu-ray is flawed. (I have both).
Htdude14 01-07-08, 11:22 PM Score!!:D I found and bought a copy today at FS in Kitchener, On. There was 1 copy left on the shelf.
Got my copy today! :D
Picture is kept PURE. Not all stripped and generic looking like Queen. Some grain and film particles and softer look ... Not sure how much improvement in the picture there is over the DVD. Sound and extras are POPPING! Love it!
Picture is kept PURE. Not all stripped and generic looking like Queen.
What do you mean by kept PURE? I'm watching the Queen concert right now on HD DVD and the PQ looks pretty good to me. Not as clear as other concerts filmed in HD like Heart or Chicago/Earth Wind And Fire, but it looks good like a good film transfer. Just curious what you meant by "pure". Style it was filmed? Transfer?
THe Queen HD DVD looks fantastic. Pure? Stripped? Generic looking?
Ah...okay.
The Queen is overprocessed picture. They worked too hard at cleaning up the grain, so the picture comes out over-processed and unnatural.
When you first watch Queen, it looks fantastic. After about half-way through the video ... The picture kind of goes flat and you realize it's too processed/ too clean.
BTW: Who's watched the extras on Zeppelin? >>> I wouldn't even ask Blu-Ray people since "EXTRAS DON'T MATTER."
Anyways ... a little challenge for you >>>
What is "different" about Robert Plant and Peter Grant in the extra's interview on the Thames?

I see no evidence of any noise reduction on the Queen HD DVD. Must be your setup.
mosman22 01-16-08, 11:58 AM I was in a Newbury Comics in the Boston area and was pysched to see this disc. As an added bonus it was on sale for less then 20 bucks. They had 4 or 5 copies on hd dvd and one on blu-ray. I am neutral and have pretty much stopped buying hd dvd but the blu ray wasn't on sale and was 10 bucks more. Since i don't expect my a35 to blow up anytime soon i just went with the hd dvd. I am considering going back and buying the rest of the hd dvd copies to sell on ebay, since this will never be released on hd dvd if i wait a while i bet i could make a decent profit and help spread around this great release. BTW while the picture is alright, the true hd track rocks.
I see a lot of people talking about how they got this already, but Amazon doesn't (pre-order for 2010). Is it only available outside the US?
shinksma 01-16-08, 02:15 PM I see a lot of people talking about how they got this already, but Amazon doesn't (pre-order for 2010). Is it only available outside the US?
The title was shipped to lots of retailers, but was apparently pulled ("withdrawn", recalled, whatever) before the release date. Amazon has delayed their release date to sometime in 2010 (probably some default day), but lots of folks are finding them in stores.
Why it was recalled is questionable, AFAIK: there seems to be a flaw in the audio (on the BD only, I think), but I don't know if that is the official reason or just an urban-myth-scapegoat.
I just ordered a copy from BestBuy.com, since I can't be bothered to wait for Amazon to make up their mind and lose a chance to own this title after Warner bails on the format in June. When the copy for Best Buy arrives, I'll cancel my Amazon order (which was cheaper, but oh well...).
shinksma
Thanks for the info, shinksma. I guess I'll have to get of my ass and actually go to a B&M to pick this up :D
Foxarwing42 01-16-08, 02:32 PM I found it at Best Buy through a fluke. However, when I went to go pay the barcode wouldn't work! It took them 10 minutes to figure out it wasn't supposed to be on the shelf in the first place, but they gave it to me anyways.

the only audio option under 'settings' is 'menu audio' which only has a box you can check/uncheck for 'button audio'.
is that all available on this disc?

I haven't played my disk yet (just got it yesterday), but I'll make an educated guess:
That doesn't seem right - that sounds like the menu for the player, not the disk.
The disk needs to be playing, not stopped, to access the audio menu.
Alternatively, press the audio button while the movie is playing - it should allow you to cycle through the possible options.

Its the disc's menu, it has the extras and chapters, etc. I accessed the menu while the movie was playing.
I pressed the audio button on my remote yesterday but the sound was muted, no cycling. I hit it a couple times but it remained muted, skipping to the next chapter brought the sound back.
Let me know how your menu looks. Only subcategories under settings are for language, menu audio, and video zoom.
***just a FYI, I get audio when my 905 is set to 'direct' as I do with other movies with TrueHD, but the quality is not TrueHD and my receiver still shows 'direct' when its supposed to show 'TrueHD'. DD+ works and was much better than whatever audio track I'm getting currently***
shinksma 01-23-08, 10:17 PM Let me know how your menu looks. Only subcategories under settings are for language, menu audio, and video zoom.
Aha. Look under "Language Settings". For some reason, HD DVD and BD audio settings, like TrueHD vs PCM vs whatever, are sometimes considered language options.
Just fired up the HD DVD, and indeed, that is where it's at.

oh bless you :D I never even bothered to check language settings.
Just checked and after switching from 5.1 to TrueHD the sound definitly improved. Only thing is the receiver still indicates 'direct' rather than displaying 'TrueHD', so I'll test more later seeing as its only 8am and people are sleeping lol. As long as I know the audio being played IS TrueHD then I won't be too concerned with it being properly displayed on my 905.
thanks again!

Hmmm, that's interesting. I wonder what could possibly need a license for distribution in the US and/or world-wise? Is there some explicit use of a corporate logo (other than Warner and Led Zeppelin) that would trigger such a need? Or is it the licensing to the film itself - forgot to pay the director or producer their cut and/or get the license for the mechanical rights from LZ for the new format?
I can't remember if any logos are splashed around - need to watch the HD DVD fully... (Like the infamous "Gigi" LP cover on the cover of Floyd's Ummagumma - whited out after the first pressing until the remastered CD in the 1990s.)

Petey Parker 01-25-08, 11:42 AM Damnit. I never cancelled my order with Tiger Direct because you had to call in to cancel and I never had time. Plus it seemed they'd never actually get it anyway. Instead I removed their authorization to charge my Paypal account. Apparently that didn't work as one month later I've gotten charged and now I've got a second copy. Its past the 30 day mark so I can't return my copy to B&N either (I haven't actually opened either copy yet so its not like I'd be frauding B&N with the new copy) I guess I'll have to find somebody that wants to buy it.

shinksma 02-11-08, 11:54 AM OK, so anyone know for sure whether there are differences in the new version? The Cameron Crowe stuff yanked as mentioned in a previous post? I snagged the original release fearing it might never see the light of day, but my curiosity is piqued now...
shinksma
I've heard that You Really Got Me, by the Kinks was heard during the Crowe segmant. Warner didn't get approval, so it was pulled. Kind of ironic, because it's been a long running rumour that Jimmy Page played guitar on that song and not Davies.
Hmm I wonder how come they are so much of these copies out in the streets, if WHV snagged them before they where schedule to hit the store shelves...I guess that's why we have the underground networks at hand.
What ever I ordered the original copy, because I want the one that's not supposed to be in are hands. But would like to know if they added more stuff to the new release, and if it's worth the extra coin.

I had ordered the BR in January from another source and from the looks of the package, they did indeed remove the "Radio Profile Spotlight by Cameron Crowe (1976)" segment. The rest of the disc looks identical. UPC code of the HD DVD is 883929010783. Did the original release have a different UPC.

narcopolo 03-22-08, 11:53 AM My question is..I have this on SD...awesome movie...but is it that much better on HD???
If you care about sound, it's lossless on HD DVD and blu-ray.
The SD DVD probably has Dolby Digital since the program is probably too long to fit lossless on there, which would have to be PCM.
The DD track on the DVD sucks! This is a huge improvement sound wise, that's well worth a double dip.
Got my copy of Song Remains The Same on HD DVD from Xploited a while back but never watched it. Just watched the HD DVD last week. I was never into Led Zeppelin, but I am now. Bought the Complete Recordings boxset from Amazon and have been listening to them all week in the car and at work (with my headphones). Love the TrueHD track and seeing Jimmy Page perform was pretty cool. Going to try to emulate some of his moves when I play Guitar Hero or Rock Band. :D

You know, I read through this entire thread last night but it still isn't clear to me what happened with the delay/recall. Some say it was the interview extra and some say it was the TrueHD issue with BD. Did Warner ever release a new version of this HD DVD after they announced they were going to drop HD DVD? I saw the highdefdigest article (http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/Warner/Street_Date_Changes/Warner_Re-Announces_Song_Remains_the_Same_Blu-ray,_HD_DVD/1448), but I don't remember seeing it back on Amazon after the recall. Yes, I used to have the new version in addition to the two copies of the "recalled" version, but eventually returned it for a refund to the local store I bought it at.

You're right. I want to have one of each so I went to Amazon and added the HD DVD to my cart last night. Sure enough I got a notification just now that it shipped out along with the tracking number. The whole time Amazon's product page says it's expected in 2010 and when I checked out it said expected ship date of 2010, too.

I would say the recalled version since it has the Cameron Crowe extra that was removed later. Not that the radio thing is all that great, but the fact that it has one more extra makes it "preferred". :D
I got the recalled version a month after the fact for about 25 bux at Amoeba.

Is that the only difference? Was that the only reason they originally pulled it? TIA
Quentin2 03-18-09, 01:40 AM Yes, that's the only difference. Warner pulled it to remove the Cameron Crowe interview and any mention of it from the artwork - then rerelease it. The original HD DVD plays fine, nothing wrong with it like with the first BD versions. Since the rerelease was about when Toshiba pulled the plug I don't know how many HD DVDs got out there, maybe most of the used ones for sale are the old version. ?? I suppose Warner corrected the playabilty problems on the BD rerelease.

I just received a brand new copy of what is apparently the recalled version from an online retailer. There must be some of them still around.
Quentin2 04-02-09, 07:12 PM Good going, WP! So it seems many of the copies for sale are the first version. Funny, Warner was so adamant to get that version out of the stores and tucked away in some warehouse but now is dumping inventory including the "illegal" discs! Guess they initially had to make a visible effort to correct the issue and satisfy the lawyers but now no one remembers or cares - just dump all HD DVDs and make room for BDs.
