If I set the PS3 to "44.1 / 88.2 / 176.4 kHz" and uncheck "Linear PCM 2 Ch. 88.2 kHz" & "Linear PCM 2 Ch. 176.4 kHz", then my receiver sees 2 ch. 16 bit 44.1 kHz .WAV files as 5.1 PCM. Sound only plays from the front R/L mains, but the other speakers have a faint white noise coming from them.

If I set the PS3 to "44.1 / 88.2 / 176.4 kHz" and check "Linear PCM 2 Ch. 88.2 kHz" & "Linear PCM 2 Ch. 176.4 kHz", then my receiver sees 2 ch. 16 bit 44.1 kHz .WAV files as 2.0 PCM. Sound only plays from the front R/L mains, but the other speakers have a faint white noise coming from them.

I am using HDMI.

What is going on here? 2 ch. sound should always register as 2 ch. PCM on my receiver coming from the PS3 and there should be no faint white noise coming from the rear L/R surround speakers!

Is this a bug???

Thanks! :)

I don't believe so. The PS3 via HDMI sends out 2.0 PCM as a 5.1 PCM track with no information in the non-stereo channels. This is not typical behavior for an audio device, but then again the PS3 is not your typical cd player. You can fix it by switching to an optical connection, as optical can only carry 2 channels of PCM information, but then you lose the benefits of HDMI.

actually, I just leave the PS3's sound setting to HDIM Automatic when playing back Blu-ray and DVD.

when I want to listen to 2-channel WAVs, MP3s, CDs, and AVI/DIVX videos, I switch the sound setting from HDMI Automatic to HDMI Manual(with only 2-channel PCM 44.1 selected) Takes a few seconds, but it work...

why doesn't Sony do something about this? I can't believe out of the millions of PS3 owners, I'm the only one who finds this annoying? :)

PS3 also takes 44.1kHz wav files and outputs them as 48kHz. I cannot seem to fix this no matter what I do. The PS3 does not allow me to uncheck 48kHz in manual mode.
