View Full Version : Need an HDMI cable for PS3 -- "Made for PS3" or Monoprice?
Josh7289 07-27-07, 08:09 PM I'm going to buy a PS3 soon, and I'm going to need an HDMI cable. The question is, which do I buy? Here are my choices:
Sony DLC-HD20P PlayStation 3 HDMI Cable (http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=11039942&tab=Features): This is apparently Sony's official HDMI cable for PS3. It's available cheaper at Amazon.com, and a reviewer there said only the Sony cable allowed his PS3 to output 1080p (while his other HDMI cable allowed only a maximum output of 1080i) Is there anything "special" or different about this Sony cable from the two below, or is it all marketing hype? Are there any benefits to using this cable with a PS3 that the two below would not give me?
Monoprice.com cable #1 (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10240&cs_id=1024002&p_id=2219&seq=1&format=2&style=): This cable is more expensive than the one below.
Monoprice.com cable #2 (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10240&cs_id=1024004&p_id=2412&seq=1&format=2&style=): This cable is cheaper than the one above.
Between these two cables from Monoprice.com, what are the differences, and which should I get to just connect my PS3 to my TV or receiver? I'm not sure exactly what makes the two different.
So, which is the best cable for me?
28 gage monoprice.
The 24 gage monoprice is a hulk of a cable, you can barely bend the thing (I have 2 24's and 28's from monoprice). It has a very thick inner wall sleeve on it that really beefs it up and is simply unneccessary. The 28 gage cable is still rather thick but much more reasonable, and is great quality.
Why would you even consider the official PS3 cable? Complete waste of money. Monoprice cables are very high quality and you wont find a better price. Don't buy into the expensive cable hype.
Good luck.
Mongoos150 07-27-07, 08:25 PM I'd go for Blue Jeans Cable. A bit better made in my opinion (though they're both on par with eachother) - if you're doing runs under 3m, you don't need the 24awg. Stick with the 28awg.
charliebird 07-27-07, 08:25 PM I bought a $6 dollar monoprice cable and it works great. I wouldn't recommend anything else.
Pikasauce 07-27-07, 08:35 PM Blue jeans cables, definintely. I own three HDMI cables by them and they are top notch.
Chris22783 07-27-07, 09:36 PM Wait until next month, then buy a cable from either Monoprice or BlueJeans, you want a 1.3 cable and currently neither store offers them. If your TV doesn't support 1.3 I guess it doesn't really matter, couldn't hurt either way though. If you don't want to wait there are official 1.3 cables available (very expensive though) or other options, do a product search or check ebay.
And yes, the 24 AWG Monoprice is a beast :P You only really need it if you plan to run a cable through the wall. Probably don't even need it then but best to keep up to code.
mcmushx15 07-27-07, 09:37 PM monoprice
Pikasauce 07-27-07, 09:38 PM The 1.3 standard is for the hardware, not the cables. If cables say they "1.3" it's just marketing.

Huh? 1.3 cables? That's funny.
monoprice cables are great!

Welcome to your new education here at AVS. I came here many posts ago and was falling for the same BS. I have since seen the light, as have others I've directed to monoprice.
chrishicks 07-28-07, 12:45 AM definitely get the Sony cable. its a better cable because it costs more.
;)
SAVholic 07-28-07, 02:08 AM get the 28AWG (great cable by the way)
24AWG at 6ft is an overkill
Quikzilver 07-28-07, 03:04 AM I'll put a vote in for the 28AWG monoprice cable for sure.
johnsmith808 07-28-07, 05:54 AM Monoprice 28awg as well.
Used the money saved for a monster power s-video cable ...nay just kidding.
squidboy 07-28-07, 08:29 AM Another vote for Monoprice. All of the cables that I've ordered from them have been great.
Josh7289 07-28-07, 09:11 AM Well, between the Monoprice and the Blue Jeans, is there really a difference? It's an all-digital connection, right?
And the Blue Jeans (http://www.bluejeanscable.com/store/dvi/index.htm) six foot HDMI cable seems to be about four times as much as the cheaper Monoprice cable. Is there really a difference?
And what do you think of that guy that I talked about in the Amazon.com review?
Thanks.

Simply put he's a moron.
GMEHRA84 07-28-07, 02:00 PM just keep in mind whichever cable you go with, if later on you have problems with your ps3 (not that you are going have any problems) god forbid if you do, sony is going to ask what cable are you using just say "sony". If you say you're using any other brand they'll void your warranty. I my self use monoprice

Good point, I cant stand when these companies try to BS you like that. They would most likely try to claim something was wrong with the monoprice cable.
I still cant believe how cheap I got all of my home theater cables for. I ordered almost everything from monoprice for an entire home theater system setup for less than $75.

I my self use monopriceAbsolute good point - but what I find is more amusing is that when the PS3 was released there was no "PS3 HDMI" cable. What were we supposed to do? Wait 4 months to use the HDMI until an authorized PS3 cable came out. Come on. Just BS. If they ask you any question, cables, hard drives, etc. the answer is always a Sony product was used.
Josh7289 07-28-07, 02:40 PM Alright, thanks for the advice, everyone.
I'm about ready to order the 6 ft. 28AWG cable from MonoPrice.com, but I need to know how fast their shipping is. From your experience, if I ordered this weekend, which shipping method would I need to choose to make sure I get the cable by Tuesday?
Thanks!
$60 for an 6 foot HDMI cable?? (oops..excuse me 6 1/2 foot cable)
Red flag went up.

I did the regular shipping and it was real fast. Call customer service and see what they say would be good for you. Also I don't know about you, but I purchased a 12 ft cable needing only a 3 foot run, but since I move things around some time (entertainment center) if I needed to switch sides (8 - 12 ft run) I wanted to have room if I needed to. I know they are real cheap and I could always buy another one, but it's alse real cheap to just give your self some extra room to work with and not have to wait for shipping.

Monoprice has been tremendous for me. I think the standard shipping says 2-3 days right? The orders on mine were always completed and shipped the day it was placed, and it seems it was in my mailbox exactly when it says, 2-3 days. If you order today you should have your cable by Wednesday at the latest. I did one of my orders with the 2-day expedited and it came in 2 days.
Very good customer service and they seem to be on top of everything.
Josh7289 07-28-07, 03:16 PM The choices (and prices for this cable) are:
USPS First Class: 3-4 business days[$3.12]
USPS Priority: 2-3 business days[$4.60]
Third Day: 3 business days[$8.80]
Second Day: 2 business days[$11.70]
Next Day: 1 business day[$30.30]
I trying to decide between saving some money with USPS Priority and taking a chance or spending $7 more for second day. MonoPrice is located in CA, and I'm in NJ, so I don't know if that would have an effect on the shipping time (maybe they have multiple shipping locations?).
Based on all this, which would you choose?
$5-6, 28AWG Monoprice, I have 4-5 of them, they all work 100% perfectly.
If you need one 15-20 feet or more you might need 24AWG.
dogdoctor 07-28-07, 03:34 PM I'm cheap - but I'm not that cheap. What's a $1.48. Get the 2-3 day priority. It will be fine.
Josh7289 07-28-07, 03:42 PM Actually, I was trying to decide between Priority and 2-day. Out of those two, which would you get? :D
dogdoctor 07-28-07, 03:54 PM So the question for you is how bad do you need it? Is it worth $4 bad for a guaranteed 2 day, when for 4 dollars less it still might get there in 2 but could take 3? Up to you man.
