I hope you guys are buying as many movies as I am. The cork just blew and I have bought 18 movies in one week, including the matrix and planet earth sets!?! I am in deep now as I have spent almost 2 grand on the format!! :D Thank god I picked HD-DVD, Because blu doesn't have enough quality flicks to feed this lust.

I got around 10 movies 2 weeks back. This was the biggest purchase spree for me. I usually buy one every other week or two. Yeah, BD has everything on hold until the player specs are up to code.

I haven't gone through all of Planet Earth but what an amazing disc. You're going to love it. I agree I'm nervously looking at the titles coming (Heroes, 300, Hot Fuzz, Blade Runner, Harry Potter series, Elizabeth) and I'm thinking than I better hide my receipts from my gf. LOL

I mentioned this the other day in another thread but I buy HD DVD's like crazy! I plan on purchasing 25 HD DVD's this coming week on the 31 (6 of them being imports) and only 1 blu ray. less then a month ago I went on a shopping spree and picked up 30 something HD DVD's. Since I went HD I'm NEVER turning back. Damn near sold half my DVD collection just so I can re-buy and enjoy them in true hd. Its fun but costly. I dont mind, money comes easy to me (knock on wood) lol.

I bought my HD-A2 in April and have 61 HD DVD'S now. I can't seem to control myself. These movies look so good they are addicting. I am not a fanboy but I do find it interesting that Bluray touts having 6 or 7 or 8 studio backing. Yet most of their offerings are also available on HD DVD. And of the ones that are not, I can find only about 10 to 15 I would be interested in. I am just speaking for myself. But I do believe the HD DVD offerings are the better of the two. At least at this point.

Well I’m not the fanatic that some on these boards are (182 DVDs since 1997 & 20 HD DVDs since April 2007) and since I’m in the process of selling my house I don’t have the disposable income that some have. Still I’ve gone on a few sprees lately. How could I pass up the Fry’s $11.99 sale? I nabbed 3of those and then the next day my daughter’s Planet Earth HD DVD set (birthday gift) arrived. That means we actually had 7 new disks roll into our house in 24 hours and that hasn’t happened since DVD was a new format.

Right now HDDVD has 5 in the top100 on amazon, is this a first for 1 time. But either way there are 9 next gen in the top100.

Next Tuesday is my biggest HDDVD buying spree I got 15 on the way new releases, just passed 100 in my total this week too.

I was at new BB that opened yesterday in my town (smallest BB I've ever seen) and they are pushing to pick Planet Earth has a next gen buy and 300 this week coming up. I told the sale guy he would see he at least 3 times a week, but won't buy any HDDVD unless they match Amazon price, or I have gift cefiticates from work.

Tax free weekend in 2 weeks too.

i don't know how many hd dvds i have. around 140.

i passed 100 with the matrix set.

i had been out of the ht hobby for a few years. mostly skipped dvd. so, i am free to buy most without a double dip.

hd dvd cost me a lot of $ on speakers this year. my old setup was 2.0 and now 5.1.

i have 3 belle klipsch up front, 2 heresy ii for surrounds, 2 jbl subs and a velodyne sms-1.

All my money had been going to other hobbies for a while (ie NBA playoffs), but the next couple weeks will be pretty expensive for me with BI already purchase; Shaun, Hot Fuzz and 300 coming next week, and Heroes at the end of the month. All good stuff that I couldn't pass up though.

I am going to take a wild guess here. And I am using myself as an example. I believe a fair number of us new HD DVD owners are sitting on rather sizable collections of SD DVD's. And if you are like me. They for the most part are collecting dust on the shelf. Personally I have collection of over 700 SD's. A collection I built up over several years. Most purchased at bargain prices averaging $10 each or less. My collection was my pride and joy. Then I bought this darn Toshiba HD-A2. It is like I am starting over and I am out of control. And you don't run into a lot of $10 HD DVD's. No, these are averaging $20 plus. I look at my SD collection now and almost feel guilty. It is almost like I have to lower myself to watch one now. Then you throw in the fact that I have replaced a number of my SD's with HD's and I question my own judgement. Darn this new format.

I mean....60++ titles? What the hell is everyone buying? Im waiting for some more of the big epics/classics to be released before I go crazy.

I've been Netflixing lots of stuff and the movies have been mostly good. But, I didnt plan on buying any of them.

I've been buying HD-DVD'S and renting dvd's and I notice the quality difference right away.
The thing that bugs me is the different release dates of the same film in DVD and HD-DVD.
I rented the film "shooter" a few weeks ago in DVD then just noticed this week it's soon to be released in HD-DVD.
If I had known I would have bought the HD version and watched it for the first time, instead I watched for the first time a poorer picture quality film.

Yeah... probably many of us will watch a movie multiple times or at least some favorite scenes multiple times. It's also great to have a movie library where you may have friends over and if the movie selection is big enough you can find a consensus for what movie everyone wants to watch. I haven't thrown a movie party but someday in the near future I want to. I remember watching "Farewell my Concubine" at a movie party and eating great food and hanging out with friends. With HD we finally have a format that will not show its age poorly in a decade. The HD we have now should take us to 15-20ft screens without the picture crapping out.

You also have to think about it in terms of a movie is 10 bucks a person for entry and if you buy popcorn and drinks for two that's 30 bucks right there. Many people are just avoiding the theatre and buying the HD movie when it's delivered after the theatrical run.

I feel far more safe about collecting HD than I do about collecting DVDs.

Friday I bought 300, Hot Fuzz, Scary Movie 4, Darkman and Monty Python's Meaning of Life at a couple of stores. Could have bought Disturbia and Shooter on either BD or HD-DVD if I wanted to (and yes, you can get movies before street date if you know where to shop in New York City). Between this five-disc haul and the two Bourne HD-DVD movies I bought on Monday this week I've spent more money and bought more HD-DVD movies than any other week. Ironically it's the same week BD spanked HD-DVD sales in the Nielsen sales numbers by a 74/26 ratio. :(

Just before I bought a refurb A1 for $ 175 I made a list of HD titles I wanted.

player made my initial decision not a difficult one.

Those numbers are from week ending July 22 which means all these movies you purchased will be on the next breakout. The July 22nd WE results are affected by the July 10 and 17th release dates which were pretty barren for HD DVD.

^^^ None whatsoever. I just got an HDTV in March (a 1080p Olevia 747i 47"LCD) and HD-DVD via my XBox 360's add-on has been consistently giving me more enjoyment and fun than even my 360 games. I've got over 35 movies and while some have been mistakes (why did I ever buy "Lady in the Water" I'll never know! ) at no point have I regreted going HD-DVD. The money it would have cost me to buy a BD player has covered plenty of HD-DVD purchases that I don't intend to re-purchase on BD (should that format prosper and ultimately win over HD-DVD) because I ain't throwing away these movies or player. It's all about the movies and the company you keep, and in both instances I'd rather hang with the HD-DVD movie-loving crowds than the PS3-loving BD crowd and their loud shoot-em up flicks with no heart and soul. :o

I was going crazy buying HDDVD movies, but slowed down since joining Zip.ca, in my first months membership, I got, Matrix complete set, vanhelsing, u571, superman. Saves alot of money considering I can't rent them locally, I am buying 300, and shooter on tueday, then back to the rentals.

More movies than I have time to watch, I call a movie night, and my wife says, isn't that every night ahahah the 106" screen makes movie watching so enjoyable

So did I. Thought it was going to be a "I bought HDDVD and what a fool I was" type of thread. HDDVD is awesome. I wish I had more desposible income as I have had my A2 since June 1 and am up to 12 titles. But 300, Hot Fuzz, Blade of Glory, Bourne Identity, Heros are all must buys for me.

So far I've been good about only buying titles that I don't already have on DVD. The only overlap I got was when I bought the Matrix at Best Buy when they had their "buy the Matrix and get 2 free HD-DVD's" deal. My two free HD-DVD's were Batman Begins and King Kong, both of which I had on DVD. But I don't regret it-- both movies look fantastic in HD.

What I've been doing is running through the entire HD catalog on Netflix. It's save me a lot of money.

But I will be getting 300 when that comes out tomorrow.

Eventually, when I can get a Blu-Ray player for as cheaply as I got my HD-DVD player ($250) then I'll make the Blu-Ray investment. Hopefully, by the time that day comes, the Blu-Ray players will also have reached a standard, so I won't end up with a gimped player.

Well thank you for your sacrifice for such a noble profession. You could do a lot of things that make more money but you chose Teaching most likely for the love. I think Teachers are underpaid and overworked a majority of the time. My son is entering Kindergarten this year and I will always make sure he respects his Teacher.

My Grandfather had 7 kids and he told them "if it comes down to your word and the Teachers I'm taking the Teachers word every time" Some may think this is harsh but it let my aunts and uncles know that they had better work out any issues with the Teach. They all turned out ok so he was likely right on that one.

Buying HD DVD is not like buying DVD crap. At 1080p the quality is so good that is like buying the original celluloid film! And you can build a library of great classics for your children or grand children that missed the theatre show. I own a Mitsubishi HC5000 FullHD projector, and seeing the HD DVD of Casablanca on my setup is like having seen it in theatre in 1942. :D

My gf makes more money that I do and she ribs me about it but I'd rather be in a system that is egalitarian rather than sexist.

I think that we're going to be the beneficiaries of some nice movie sales by years end. Last Xmas everyone was taking advantage of the Google deal. This Xmas it should be even better with more titles available.

I fell into the same pattern that I did when I got my first SD DVD player: Buy everything. About a month ago I joined Netflix to help ease the pain. Problem is, between the large number of must-own titles coming out now and in the next several months, some killer imports and some rather expensive items (I WANT that 5 disc Blade Runner) I think I'll be falling back into old habits.

I guess eating is overrated anyway. :D

Not to mention the XA2 does wonders with its scaler for SD.. Probably as good as you can get for the price (sort of in-between cheaper DVD and more expensive external processor)...

i chose my setup because i knew it would be hard to watch dvd after seeing hd dvd.

between upscaling and a 2x zoom (120"-60" screen), can still enjoy a lot of content that is not on hd. therefore, no rush to buy catalog from certain studios.
