View Full Version : Upscale rankings on BD/HDDVD players
Mr. Good Cat 07-28-07, 03:35 PM I don't know if someone wants to put forth the effort but i was curious(and it might be helpful to potential buyers) what the rankings would be on all the players.
I have a Panny 10A and IMO it upscales very good....but what about the other players ie-
HD DVD - HD-A1, HD-XA1, HD-A2, HD-XA2, 360 add on
BD - PS3, both Pannys, Phillips, Pioneer, Both Sonys, Both Samsungs, LG Dual
Twice in two days...
From Kris Deering's review of the 1200:
"With the high definition tests completed I moved on to the standard definition HQV test disc. The Samsung passed all the tests and verified the player’s noise reduction circuits are highly effective (they only function with standard definition discs). The DVD SD version of Babel appeared sharper than on any other Blu-ray player I sampled. Its performance is only equaled by the Toshiba HD-XA2 HD DVD player, which uses the same Silicon Optix Reon chip set"

My post referred to the Samsung BD-P1200. Note that Kris' comments are from April and wouldn't include a couple of new BD players or any firmware upgrades to any players since then.
Mr. Good Cat 07-28-07, 04:11 PM thanks....so i guess the XA2 and 1200 are tops....the rest fall below so they really don't matter?

What size is your screen? With a good DVD transfer, I would say that anything 60" and below that you would be hard pressed to see a difference during a normal viewing of the movie.
Plus if you are looking for pixelation and bad upconversion, how can you enjoy the movie?
dobyblue 07-28-07, 07:52 PM Yes I'd like to hear people's opinions on the upscaling of the PS3 vs. the upscaling of the A2 specifically.

Yep, a couple of firmware updates for the XA2, not too mention people that have both seem to prefer the XA2 outright as one retailer pointed out with the XA2 you have the control to go in adjust and set up different settings.

I also have that kind of control with my Panny.

Yes but no REON.

Right but there really is only so much you can do with SD DVD. I can't really believe that there is much of a difference in BD/HD DVD playback with the Reon and without.

Big difference, very noticeable a GREAT deal more than the A2 or PS3, but do what you want. If there wasn't such a big difference why is everyone going ape **** over these chips in players or receivers? Look at the new Denon, Yammaha, Onkyo etc.

You can't believe in facts?

I believe Kris will soon have a new review of the PS3 (since the 1.8 update) that should compare it at least indirectly to the A2.

Is there a big difference in BD/HD DVD playback with the REON? I know the REON improves SD upscaling but does that also improve BD/HD playback?

Ouch...snarky comment. I have seen an A2 running next to a Sammy 1200 at Best Buy. When making my decision on which format to buy I had a rep put the same movie in each player...Superman Returns.
Both movies looked great but also looked identical. the Sammy has the Reon, the A2 does not. My conclusion: They Reon did nothing incredible with HD content to my eyes.

I have the A1 and the Sammy 1200, and on my 60" SXRD, the Sammy (with REON) looks sharper and more detailed playing DVDs.

I've never tested the 1200, but XA2 vs A2 (Reon vs non-Reon) have a LOT of difference on my 46" CRT HD RPTV (ISF calibrated annually every Jan/Feb) viewed from approx 2x screen width.
Has anyone compared the scaling of the HD-A1/HD-D1/HD-XA1 to the Reon scaling?

In my post above(#15), I did. I preferred the the Sammy 1200 with the REON over my A1 without.

David Susilo 07-31-07, 10:03 AM The XA2 is better than the A1, but strangely enough I find that the A1 is still slightly better than the A2. XA2, also, is far better than the Samsung 1000 (never tried 1200)

I'm not surprised, I always considered the A2 to be a step down from the A1.
