View Full Version : Did you know HD DVD exclusives currently out number Blu-ray exclusives?
cool8man 07-28-07, 09:24 PM I was curious what the difference was in exclusives between the two formats so using the list at DVD Talk Forum for 2007 (http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showthread.php?t=487066) and the one from here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=665702) for 2006 I started counting. I was surprised by how close the number of exclusive releases are for each format.
This only goes up through August of this year...

Things aren't as lopsided as everyone in the media makes it out to be regarding the library for each format. Honestly I think HD DVD would be doing just as well if not better than Blu-ray if HD DVD was built into any of the new game systems.

Ohh, huh that's strange I Ctrl'd F to find it but it said couldn't be found.
Anyway this clearly shows that despite have less studios to have on a pamphlet HD DVD has just as much content.

Yeah, then we could have used the millions of 360 in our player #'s to dwarf the BD players. But would as many 360 have sold? Probably not.

pointless2 07-28-07, 10:02 PM One Last Thing and The War Within are not Blu-Ray exclusives - their distributor Magnolia is neutral.
fistofsouth 07-28-07, 10:48 PM It should also be remembered that the HD DVD library is more balanced. There's no accounting for taste, but there's also no denying that HD DVD has a larger selection of older films (Robin Hood, Casablanca, Deer Hunter, Spartacus, et al) while with BD popcorn fare (Stealth, Gone in 60 Seconds, The Marine, Crank, et al) has a more robust representation. Before some Blu-bois comes on here and goes Ape-S I am going to point out that both have a little of each; BD will be getting Close Encounters and Smokin' Aces is an HD DVD exclusive, but those are the exceptions. I'm not going to bother counting, but there can't be more than a dozen pre-1995 BDs. There have been some great films since 1995, but there is also about 80 years of cinema prior to that date to consider and some of it is worthwhile as well.
As far as HD DVD exclusives go you could always add the 30-odd porn titles, not my fare, but popular with certain segments.
cool8man 07-28-07, 10:58 PM One Last Thing and The War Within are not Blu-Ray exclusives - their distributor Magnolia is neutral.
Hmmm Amazon lists them but doesn't seem to carry them at this point. They do carry the Blu-ray versions. Why is that?
cybereality 07-28-07, 11:10 PM Nice list you put together. It does put things in perspective.
I can say this much: HD-DVD might "only" have Universal, but they sure are pulling their weight.
Kram Sacul 07-29-07, 12:02 AM Aren't all those Warner Bros "exclusives" going to eventually be released on BRD?
MidnightWatcher 07-29-07, 12:06 AM Don't forget, the Matrix Trilogy is actually 3 movies, too. :)
MichaelHDDVD 07-29-07, 12:09 AM Aren't all those Warner Bros "exclusives" going to eventually be released on BRD?
The keyword is "eventually" Pirates of the Caribbean may "eventually" be released on HD DVD. So until they're on Blu-Ray they are HD DVD exclusives.
tormond 07-29-07, 12:10 AM Also left off Mr and Mrs Smith (maybe? exclusive in NA but already available on HDDVD) Also Oliver Twist is available on HDDVD (the Roman Polanski version) I would pretty much list or delist any of the films that exploited.com sells as "non exclusive" as Tony ships them fast from a NA location and has a totally English (for NA) website that isn't a mystery to click thru (unlike say Amazon.jp)
It's not really surprising since Fox has dried up, Disney is barely trickling, and Sony is having to hold up Blu-Ray almost solo. I believe Universal has released the most HD titles of any studio, which is nice, but I wish they would spend more time on some of their transfers.
Dawn of the Dead too
Not out yet.
Kram Sacul 07-29-07, 07:15 AM The keyword is "eventually" Pirates of the Caribbean may "eventually" be released on HD DVD. So until they're on Blu-Ray they are HD DVD exclusives.
There's way more of a chance of Warner releasing Chocolate Factory or Batman Begins on BRD than Disney releasing anything on HD-DVD, but nevermind.

For me this is a great point. I simply would never have built a theater just for recent releases ..thanks HDDVD !

HPforMe 07-29-07, 10:18 AM You gotta applaud Universal. Feet first in this new format and putting to shame Fox and Disney in willingness to release. If Disney or Fox put their money where their mouth was at the difference in content would be significantly wider for Blu Ray.
And the point about older catalogue titles I echo. Love when older films are remastered for hi-def that's where high definition can really be appreciated.

Bob Black 08-18-07, 10:10 PM Anybody can clearly see that the Universal list absolutely BLOWS AWAY the Sony list! I knew Sony had quite a few garbage titles released but, seriously, 3/4 of their titles are terrible! It's no wonder I haven't felt like I've been missing anything without Blu-Ray!
Nice thread - it is obvious to anyone with half a brain that Sony have chosen the 'invest in propaganda' path over the 'release quality products' path...
So it will be interesting to see whether the consumer buys the propaganda or the quality products ;-)
xboxboi 08-18-07, 10:27 PM not all sony lionsgate and disney titles are exclusive per see. Dun forget european distributors that are releasing the titles on HD DVD. once that is done, the titles should be removed from the exclusive list :p
ryoohki 08-18-07, 11:02 PM Nice list, the only i hate is Universal threatment of Catalog title. There new title are very very good to awesome but catalog lacks a lot (EE anyone)
Warner is fairly good while some are downright crappy, other are superb (Grand Prix for example)
Paramount is pretty stable, they handle catalog pretty well, there not top notch but they are good and consistent. Can't wait to see Top Gun in October!
Sony started crappy, but since 2007 they are pretty solid in most their titles, disney too
Btw, i'am dual format owner...
Blu-ray Disc: 50+% of titles are in DCT-artifact prone MPEG-2 , and another 20+% are less than 25GB! Who is claiming superiority now?!
I agree MPEG-2 should be dropped, but you make it sound like MPEG-2 is the codec of choice. Most new titles are not using MPEG-2. MPEG-2 was mostly used before better AVC/VC-1 encoders were widely available.
A BD25 is superior to a HD DVD30 scientifically with many shorter movies because of the higher transfer rates available on BD. The BD25 can provide higher video bitrates.
Everdog 08-18-07, 11:19 PM I have Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire on HD DVD, but did not see it on that list. OK, its an import.
Rakesh.S 08-18-07, 11:40 PM The keyword is "eventually" Pirates of the Caribbean may "eventually" be released on HD DVD. So until they're on Blu-Ray they are HD DVD exclusives.
the difference is...Warner is a neutral studio (which means it WILL be released) and Disney is not neutral (which means it may NEVER be released).
I wouldn't count them as exclusives personally, but whatever floats your boat i suppose.
just for the record, i am format neutral
Topweasel 08-19-07, 12:14 AM Like he said until their available on the other format their an exclusive title. I mean whats the use of saying Batman Begins is available for both if you can't even get a release date for one while we have been able to purchase for a year now on the other one.
MichaelHDDVD 08-19-07, 12:17 AM the difference is...Warner is a neutral studio (which means it WILL be released) and Disney is not neutral (which means it may NEVER be released).

Warner is neutral* the * is indicative of how far from neutral they sway. * means more movies on HD DVD, more lossless audio tracks, more special features, etc.
Fox News is also Fair and Balanced and like Warner Bros Fox News also leans a certain direction. (Replace Fox News with MSNBC depending on your personal political preference :p)
Amazing... HD DVD has four to five times as many titles available that I'd want vs. what's on BD... and even more if you count the import HD DVDs.
That's certainly an eye opener I wouldn't have expected.
A BD25 is superior to a HD DVD30 scientifically with many shorter movies because of the higher transfer rates available on BD. The BD25 can provide higher video bitrates.
No it isn't - the BD-25s require the extra bandwidth for the mandatory LPCM uncompressed audio tracks (plural). So there is no advantage for going BD-25. Even Sony admitted this was the reason they switched to BD-50!
Face it, there are 200+ crap quality Blu-ray Discs out there - and the public can't see from the packaging which ones they are - why do you think they have the audio codec printed on the cases but deliberately leave off the video codec?! The fact that they try to promote ALL Blu-ray Disc titles as being equal in video quality is part of the disgusting propaganda from the Blu-ray FUD factory.
darinp2 08-19-07, 02:40 AM No it isn't - the BD-25s require the extra bandwidth for the mandatory LPCM uncompressed audio tracks (plural). You don't seem to really know what you are talking about here with your claim about these multiple "mandatory LPCM uncompressed audio tracks", so could you please explain why you claimed that? It's never a good idea to let FUD/misinformation go unquestioned. Stick with the science.
5thDanMaster 08-19-07, 11:34 AM I was curious what the difference was in exclusives between the two formats so using the list at DVD Talk Forum for 2007 (http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showthread.php?t=487066) and the one from here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=665702) for 2006 I started counting. Whichever media format which has bias one way or the other. My point is that Warner Bros. is not perfectly neutral. No company is.
quantumred 08-19-07, 03:49 PM @cool8man
A quick glance shows your list and this one is mostly in agreement.
http://hddvdstats.com/index.php
mva5580 08-19-07, 05:04 PM I'm honestly surprised some Blu-Ray owners haven't jumped ship to HD-DVD just on the fact that Blu-Ray has all of this studio support, but nothing is being released for it. Fox, Disney, and others are essentially just sitting on all these titles and if I was a Blu-Ray owner, I'd be pretty upset at that list. There are TONS upon tons of movies that have not been released for Blu-Ray yet, and who knows when they ever will be? Where as Universal just continues to push out the movies on HD-DVD and people are buying them up.
I don't know what it is, but Sony must really have something on Fox and Disney for them to just sit idly by and not do much of anything in this whole situation. I'm always amazed whenever I go Fry's, Best Buy, wherever, and look at the differences in the selection of both formats.
Blu-Ray has (almost) all of the studio support, yet HD-DVD definitely has the all around better selection of titles available. I don't know how long that will last, but seriously if I was a Blu-Ray owner I'd be pretty upset at that fact.

Mr. Blu-Knight, this thread is about HD DVD having more movies out than the studio-filled BDA.:p
Since you couldn't defend the Blu as you so valiantly often do, you naturally pounced upon a subject that would derail and move this thread in another direction; be it incorrect or factual.;)
The case in point is that HD DVD and their few studios are releasing more movies than the studio-stacked BDA.
If you have anything with which to spin it in the BDA's favor, or prove the thread topic wrong, I am sure that you would do your best to do so.;)

Since you couldn't defend the Blu as you so valiantly often do, you naturally pounced upon a subject that would derail and move this thread in another direction; be it incorrect or factual.;)
The case in point is that HD DVD and their few studios are releasing more movies than the studio-stacked BDA.
If you have anything with which to spin it in the BDA's favor, or prove the thread topic wrong, I am sure that you would do your best to do so.;)
First off, I'm format neutral. I have 3 times as many HD DVD's as Blurays because that is where my tastes lie.
Let's not forget that these forums exist to provide information and further knowledge of our hobby. Why anyone gets so bent out of shape over one side vs the other is beyond me.
That said, I don't believe Darin can be called a fanboy. He is simply pointing out an incorrect statement. You seem to have no problem in letting off topic statements that support your cause stand. I personally would rather see facts discussed in this forum than misinformation - even if it is off topic.

I could do this with your entire list, but I gotta go work out.
High_Def DVD 08-20-07, 11:11 AM Mel Gibson's Apocalypto goes for HD DVD (http://www.monolith.com.pl/film.asp?kod=Apocalypto-HD) :)
High_Def DVD 08-20-07, 02:03 PM I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse.
Filmfreak04 08-30-07, 06:05 PM Are they gonna release The Bourne Identity and Supremacy on Blu ray?
dildatonr 08-30-07, 06:17 PM Well y'all have to admit that these stats for exclusive titles will not be in HD DVD favor for long if plenty some q4 titles aren't announced soon.
lrstevens421 08-30-07, 08:00 PM Nice list, under hd-dvd (universal) you have a couple of titles listed twice (the Big Lebowski, Being John Malkovich). But who's counting.
I think its time to update the OP, with the current Paramount news...
cool8man 08-30-07, 08:48 PM Nice list, under hd-dvd (universal) you have a couple of titles listed twice (the Big Lebowski, Being John Malkovich). But who's counting.I fixed it.
I think its time to update the OP, with the current Paramount news...I updated with Paramount titles, but this site is much more comprehensive:
http://hddvdstats.com/
Even better:
http://hddvdstats.com/
That site is great - need as similar one for Blu-ray.
Also they are about 100 titles behind in data.
The great stats are:
95+% of Hollywood studio titles are DL 30Gb.
100% of Hollywood studio titles are MPEG-4.
MichaelHDDVD 08-30-07, 09:08 PM Polar Express and Troy are already announced for Blu-ray. So they are in the pipeline and are not exclusive. To keep things accurate, how about a list of scheduled releases for the rest of the year?
I don't really want to nit pick, but Troy: Directors Cut is scheduled for Blu-Ray and HD DVD. The theatrical version of Troy hasn't been announced for Blu-Ray. If Troy theatrical edition keeps being pressed and released for HD DVD and not Blu-Ray it is still technically an exclusive.

Blippy2005 08-30-07, 11:44 PM I'm not sure about these but I believe they are exclusive currently to HD-DVD, even though they are imports.
Equilibrium
The Machinist
Band of Brothers
There are quite a few HD-DVD's from overseas that should be removed or at least * noted or something on the BR list as being available in HD-DVD overseas for import. And add a section for HD-DVD overseas import exclusives.
cybereality 08-31-07, 01:28 AM Its so funny that HD DVD has more exclusives and (now) more movies available and people still waive the content flag over in Blu-land.
nfinity 08-31-07, 01:47 AM Its so funny that HD DVD has more exclusives and (now) more movies available and people still waive the content flag over in Blu-land.
Well they have to somehow justify the fact they were made jackasses and that they actually spent $600-$1000 for a player.
dildatonr 08-31-07, 07:37 AM it's a reasonable assumption that with greater studio support - there are more exclusive titles. Not really a far out assumption at all. No need to call people names and drag this thread down to that level. Are people who have spent $600-600 on a HD DVD player a jack ass? and if BR pumps out more titles in q4 - will that make you a jack ass? Higher road ?
Look at the navigation bar:

Cheers - no idea why the Paramount and DreamWorks titles are still in the list ;-)
Mel Gibson's Apocalypto goes for HD DVD (http://www.monolith.com.pl/film.asp?kod=Apocalypto-HD) :)
Yes, and you get your choice of Mayan or Polish audio, and Polish or no subtitles.
Really great for those of us who speak neither Mayan nor Polish.

It is a reasonable assumption, in fact. But that doesn't change the fact that it's completely wrong.

PMSL!
Are they gonna release The Bourne Identity and Supremacy on Blu ray?
No, Bourne movies are from Universal and this studio is HD DVD exclusive.

I agree, I'm just saying it's an assumption even most HD DVD supporters had before the stat sites were put up. I also think it's a safe assumption we can discuss the stats without calling people names.
