I am going to plug it into the Onkyo 605. Thanks.
josephmckinney 07-29-07, 02:28 AM Either one will work just fine. I'm running the 8mm and it works great. The 8mm's got a thicker jacket and fancy connectors. It's definitely a nice looking cable, can't go wrong for the minimal price difference.
Mustang1 07-29-07, 04:40 AM anything but monster cable, those cables from monoprice are top notch. Monster cable are rippoffs.
Anyone will work! And any brand! ;)
beezdeez 07-29-07, 12:25 PM Get the minimal distance necessary. The longer the run, the more signal noise you will notice. Also, avoid any sharp bends or coils in the cable.
Also, do not buy the "Psyclone" optical cable from Target. I have first hand experience that this cable sucks and is very noisy.
vertigo235 07-29-07, 01:08 PM Also don't get the ones with the round connector, it doesn't stay in the xbox very well.
Im using a 12 foot 5.0mm from monoprice. Its a great cable and is dirt cheap. You dont need the 8.0mm cable but of course its not going to hurt anything. I actually wanted the black 5.0mm because it matched the rest of the cabling I have and looks nicer together when everything is tied off.
krimson 07-29-07, 05:06 PM I have some of each and prefer the 5mm unless you're doing a long run. The cable is much more flexible. Also they used a weird covering on the 8mm and it's really rough to the touch, but that is just more of a pet peeve. Both cables lock into place very well.

This is optical, not HDMI.

Something's wrong with your setup, or you got a defective cable.
Also, avoid any sharp bends or coils in the cable.
Ding ding ding! One out of three ain't bad! :p
shockemags 07-29-07, 06:00 PM Thanks everyone.
formulanerd 07-29-07, 07:38 PM 605 = sex

I was told to reduce length of the cable. This goes hand in hand with the coiling and the sharp bends. The excess length has to go somewhere and people typically coil it up.
The Psyclone cable is crap. There isn't anything wrong with my setup. It's just poor quality and doesn't fit in the 360 correctly. All of them are the same. It's suggested to avoid that cable.
formulanerd 07-30-07, 12:46 AM i agree, the connectors on the psyclone suck, i would steer clear, but other than that, with cable itself, optical is optical, and it's all the same really, you dont have to worry about excess cable (under 15 feet or so) or interference, as long as the cable doesnt have any sharp bends as someone else said.
crappy cables use 1 or 2mm fiber, get the 5 or the 8 and you'll be more than fine.

You know that judging build quality of a cable based on whether it clips firmly into a 360's dongle isn't really fair. That thing spits them out like it doesn't want 'em.

while i agree with this statement as well, i do have to say that my monoprice cables are VERY firmly attached to my vga dongle.

This is true, but the Psyclone only adds to the problem. I'd venture to say the connectors are the reason for the terrible sound quality on this cable.

But monster cable can't have that much markup if they can clear out the $39.99 xbox component cables for around $4 bucks each, can they?
I can vouch for monoprice.... ordered a few times (and recommended them to coworkers) with excellent results.
savage1005 07-31-07, 01:09 AM i have the 8 mm one from monoprice and it doesnt really fit well into the xbox optical out at all! the optical plug of the 360 sucks.
Swift Mojo Hand 07-31-07, 08:33 AM I do not know if you have ever connected an Optical Cable before so I will say remember to remove the little plastic caps at the end before you try to connect in to the back of the XBOX 360.
The first time I bought a cable I had never connected one so I guessed the tiny round nubbins on the end where normal and could not connect it. I got a little pissed and guessed TOSLINK could come in different forms. I realized my error when I went to Wal-mart and bought the $20 dollar Phillips brand with larger more obvious to the eye end caps. Believe me, I felt stupid.
Returned the Phillips and have been very satisfied with my $6 dollar cable on my 360.
