So guys -

I heard a rumor (and I assume it is just that) but want to see if you have any additional information, that Hollywood Video will be offerinig HD-DVD for rent in ther loca stores.

Anyone care to comment / elaborate?

Honestly, content (locally) is the only thing stopping me from getting an HD-DVD player.

I'm old fashioned in the sense that when I want to see something, I want to walk in and get it.

Currently, there is NO LOCAL place for me to rent HD-DVD's ;(

WHY, WHY, WHY......

I have no idea if theres anything in the works at all regarding Hollywood video. The funny thing though is once Blockbuster announced the whole Blu thing I said to myself then HD DVD should attack Hollywood. Even though Hollywood video is not that popular in some places it would be nice to have somewhere that you can walk into and rent.

Here in San Diego, I have a Blockbuster and Hollywood Video very close to my house. I have been going to Hollywood Video over Blockbuster for the past few years now. My girlfriend asked Hollywood if they are going to start renting HD DVD, and they said yes it is in the works. That is what they said, so take it for what it's worth.

My local Hollywood Video offers both BD and HD DVD rentals. Fairly limited selection though - maybe 20-25 of each format.

FWIW
I have 2 Hollywood Videos near my work and 2 near my home (I'm in the SF Bay Area); 2 out of these 4 stores carry HD DVD (and BD) - the selection is MUCH better than at the closest BB that carries BD - both of these stores have multiple copies of most of the new releases.

The store closest to my home doesn't currently carry HD DVD/BD, but I was told that they should be carrying them soon. It sounds like Hollywood Video's rollout of HD DVD/BD is on a store-by-store individual basis, so I would check with your local stores periodically.

Movie Gallery (parent co. of Hollywood) is VERY close to filing for bankruptcy. Their bonds are trading flat, wich means they are not paying interest to bond holders. Its very actively traded, even for high yield.

I too am in San Diego and I only know of one that carries both, with a limited selection for HD DVD. Robust BD selection though. I highly doubt that with their financial problems, that there is anything in the works.

That sounds about right. My local location just got done chopping their store in half and a Wells Fargo bank is opening in their previous space. It once was a big store, now it's very small.

One positive thing came out of it however. The past 3 weeks or so, all of their rentals, including new releases have been .99¢ each. They are calling it a remodel special or something like that. My girlfriend and I have been renting A LOT of movies lately. LOL.

I can see that the business is falling apart though unfortunately. While I have and love Netflix, I still do like to stroll in Hollywood once in a while to get "out". It's too bad.
