I need a second dvd player b/c my Oppo can't play some discs. I tried a toshiba, but it was real flaky at times. I want something that can play as many formats as possible and can rr and ff really fast.

Or files from the internet in God knows what format? :) kevin44 07-29-07, 11:17 PM I have had some regular dvd's not work, some divx files that would only have sound but no pic, and of course "files from the internet in God knows what format". I really would like a dvd player that can play window media video files, but I haven't found one yet. JohnAV 07-30-07, 12:12 AM I need a second dvd player b/c my Oppo can't play some discs. And if the 5982 still won't play those files, I don't know a player that will. :) kevin44 07-30-07, 01:45 PM I actually have a Phillips 5960 in another room and it's okay. It doesn't play everything though. Cyrano 07-30-07, 02:43 PM I have the 5960 and the 5982. The 5982 is better. PQ is better. kevin44 07-30-07, 04:08 PM Cyrano- Does the 5982 handle more files than the 5960? westgate 07-30-07, 04:18 PM ive had playing issues w/ several toshiba players, finally got pan dvds77 2 yrs ago, plays everything ive thrown at it. try one of the newer sd pannys, around $100?, should work great. tw33k2514 07-30-07, 04:26 PM i really like my Samsung DVD-1080P7. i haven't had an issue yet and the PQ is surprisingly good. Cyrano 07-30-07, 06:09 PM Cyrano- Does the 5982 handle more files than the 5960? I don't think so. But I haven't tried in a scientific way. I have found that ISO files play perfectly. (I think on both machines. I know on the 5982.) I have a Verrryyyy Sloowwww dialup connection so I haven't tried anything off the net. I'll check with wmvs. Are there any other file types to try? (AVI, MPG, or any other types?) The main difference between the two is that the 5982 doesn't do the extra "squeeze" in upconvert mode (720P, 1080i or 1080P [for 5982 only]). I didn't like the increase in black bar area or the noticable (to me) "out-of-round" distortion. I should add that I had earlier reported that both the 5960 and the 5982 have a habit of not keeping one of their menu setting. (the 1080i) Well, for some reason the 5982 has kept its 1080i setting for more than a week now. It does make for a more uncomplicated startup to not have to enter the menu each power up. :) I have not done a side-by-side with both machines. I've been glad to find a machine that does a good job all the time. My Bravo D1 (which has much better PQ) is sitting idle because I got tired of having glitches interrupt a film viewing. I do use the D1 but I am increasingly using the 5982. Good luck. pdadi 07-30-07, 06:54 PM Cyrano- Does the 5982 handle more files than the 5960? What other files you are talking about. It plays Xvid/divx encoded files very well. It also plays Nero recoded Mp4 files with standard profile. Plays Vobs, iso also. Doesn't play H264/WMV and Real formats. Hope this helps. kevin44 07-30-07, 07:07 PM I would love a player that can play WMV files, but others files most of us are talking about are short avi files. Also some divx/xvid files give some players more problems than others. I agree with you Westgate on toshiba players I am done buying those. westgate 07-31-07, 10:45 AM if ive had toshiba players w/ disc playing issues, why am i getting ready to buy a toshiba hd-a2 hddvd player. am i nuts or what? kevin44 07-31-07, 01:32 PM Westgate- good luck with the toshiba hd-a2. kevin44 08-13-07, 02:52 PM I just bought the new RCA 285 and so far it's very good and very cheap. Huey 08-13-07, 08:07 PM RCA 285/290/257 (or Sylvania line) do not pass DTS via SPDIF. |
