You mentioned two things there that the OP did not; Fox and Blu-ray.

This is a discussion about a film being released on HD DVD in Germany by the legal Home Video Distributor for the German market; in this case Highlight Video. Since HD DVD has no region coding one can import this HD DVD and play it on any HD DVD in the World.

It looks like this film will join the likes of Underworld, Reign of Fire and M&MS as "Blu Ray Exclusive" films that were announced (and sometimes released) on HD DVD first.

There's no demo material in this movie at all. Or acting, story, or silver surfing(3mins count) or film for that matter. It's like it was made for TV.

28 Weeks Later has much better sound and beautiful cinematography(what's the deal Fox?).

Silver Surfer is a Constantin Film production. These titles are released by Highlight, whereas Die Hard 4.0 is a Fox production and will be released by Fox in Germany.

But you can expect Resident Evil 3: Extinction being released on HD-DVD cause this movie is also a Constantin movie. I think in the US it is a Sony movie.

Yeah..... If I were you skip this one and get another movie with her in it. For some reason or other, she looked quite Man-ly in this one which allowed me to focus more on the movie. Don't ask me how it's possible but the make-up artist needs to be fired! She did look much better in the first FF movie however.

But as far as the movie itself, I'll buy it on BD. It was actually pretty damn good...

This has really got to bug the BD hardcore. There are so many "exclusive only" or not even announced BD movies available from Europe on HD DVD. Yes, you have to pay more, but if you only really want a few then it is a pretty good alternative to buying a BD player!

I heard this movie was pretty bad, so I have to debate whether it is really worth the additional cost of importing it. I have to admit however that it is pretty cool that we have the option of importing many of these BD-exclusives.

Being format neutral though, I would personally rather wait for the BD release to purchase or in this case, to rent.

NO! because its not fact that the 2. is also from "constantin film" in germany.
example:
Final Destination 1 = kinowelt
Final Destination 2 = Warner Bros.
Final Destination 3 = Warner Bros.

You know what i mean?

HD DVD has no region code so we can buy them from anywhere in the world. We are more likely to get BD exclusive movies on HD DVD than you are to get any HD DVD exclusive. :p

Xploited has a bunch of HD-DVD imports.

http://xploitedcinema.com/catalog/hd-dvds-c-35.html

Fox's pricing on blu-ray was awful high back when they were still releasing. The suggested list price for Mr and Mrs Smith was about the same as what xploited is charging for it's Poland import of the title on HD-DVD.

And since Fox canceled it, it's an HD-DVD exclusive too. :)

I saw this on BD too and both PQ and the movie was fantastic. I thought it was better than the first. Special effects was amazing. I guess I'm just not that picky cause I'll take Alba with any color hair as long as she got that body. The only thing i didn't like was Galactus. They should have kept his character true to the comics. They probably didn't want to spend all that $$ on computer graphics.

I believe that grain was intentional ... that's why you saw it on both discs.

imo, the 'look' the director wants and the quality of the master are far more important than which format you put the movie on.

$15 more is not a great deal. You didn't even believe me when I said it was $13 and now you're trying to say that it's okay to pay more than double?

Imports add up pretty quick. It's better to go purple and not have to rely on some country in Scandinavia to release it on HD-DVD for $50.

$38 not $50.

And yes it is worth it for a lot of HD DVD owners.:D

Who the heck wants an uncompleted BD player right now? If BD players had completed BD specs, and sold for the same price as say an A30, then your argument would hold water.
Buying an uncompleted BD player that one would have to replace in 6 months, if, and when all BD players are fully compliant, is a waste of money imo.
In the end it would end up costing $600.

Get me a fully compliant BD standalone player for the price of an A30 (that can decode TrueHD internally), and I would be PURPLE in a heartbeat!

Not to thread crap or anything... But, just a quick question on imports.

Does the studio get the numbers for imports? If they see a lot of people buying up BD exclusives for HD-DVD imports, would they eventually start supporting HD-DVD also?

No issue here whatsoever. Grain? What friggin' grain? A gorgeous transfer that is top tier in my book. The soundtrack is no slouch either. Highly recommended.

I too had the issue of freezing about 5 minutes into FFROTSS.

I did upgrade my A1 to the latest and greatest.... Did the intialize and cleared.

So, anyone else have issues?

I am returning to xploited cinema for an exchange...

Has anyone had any issues playing this on a 360 HD-DVD drive?

No problems with my copy in the ol' A2. But other A1/1st gen owners (2-3 in this thread) have reported freezing issues. No idea if there are bad disks in the mix or if it's a 1st gen problem.

Let us know how it works out.

Anyone own both the BD and the HD import? How does the HD DVD hold up against the blu-ray version?

Tony said it appears first gen players have playback issues with this disc. I have arranged an exchange for a different title HD DVD. Working with Tony was very smooth.

Interesting that Tony hasn't updated his website to let purchasers know of the issues on the A1...
