View Full Version : ANY chance we get The Simpsons Movie on HD-DVD?
mva5580 07-29-07, 11:59 PM Of course it would have to be imported (unless things change big time in the next year,) but what you do you think?
I saw it this weekend, absolutely loved it, and I'd buy it in a heartbeat. I just love The Simpsons and this would look fantastic in HD!
I think its owned by fox worldwide.
The bigger question is will fox have this day and date on BD or will they still be in a funk about putting discs out.
Digital Man5 07-30-07, 12:53 AM If only Toshiba could talk Fox in to going neutral, man it'd be nice.
CallMeJean 07-30-07, 01:01 AM Personally, I don't see much improvement in watching this movie on HD DVD or just being upconverted from standard DVD. I think they'll both look comparable given the source material.
I don't think we will see it on HD DVD any time in the forseable future. The Simpsons Movie was a major factor in my decision to buy a PS3. I sure hope it's day & date on BD.

Well according to IMDB FS Film Oy has the theatrical rights in Finland and Gemini Film has them in Russia. Perhaps one of them will publish in HD DVD.

Yeah, then neither HD DVD or Blu-Ray would get any releases! :p
We could together be equally disappointed. :D
Savageone79 07-30-07, 01:40 AM I'm sorry but did someone actually say the reason they bought a PS3 was to watch the Simpson's movie? Even if it comes out on Blu Ray (of which there is no guarantee) thats a lot of money to pay to watch the simpsons :)

Available titles makes an impression on adopters. I know you were kind of kidding with your post, though. The first titles I bought on HD DVD were Sleepy Hollow, Full Metal Jacket, and Blazing Saddles. They were HD DVD exclusive at that time. :)

Well, I meant once they get over this funk their in. I mean, let's be realistic here: Of all the studios that are Blu-Ray exclusive, Fox is about the only one that they MAY have a chance with. :)

I would say that financial reasons would be the primary reason for any exclusive studio to go neutral so I think Lion's Gate would be the first, but I don't expect to see anybody jump ship until disk sales reach the millions.

Weinstein will be the first - in Q4 07 with Grindhouse.
Fox is probably the very last studio (with the exception of Sony) to ever go neutral.
Fox = Content Protection and Region Coding. Both things are either not (yet) available or very lacking on HD-DVD.
So the answer to the original question would be NO, not until the war ended in favor of HD-DVD (which we both know isn't happening "anytime soon" ;) ).
Fully expect Fox to release Simpsons on Blu-Ray in Q4 07 - they won't miss the christmas/holiday business.

I guess he might find one or two other movies from Fox/Sony/Columbia Tristar/MGM/Lionsgate/Disney/Buena Vista/Miramax/Pixar tempting enough to justify the purchase even more :p
Some goes the other way round - I cannot believe any movie enthusiast can do without Universal titles, or is willing to wait for years till they become neutral/the war ends. Even better yet: Why don't we all import our titles from Poland and Russia in the future.
Dual-Format is the way to go. (If you can afford to do so)

You have sources of course. If not then thanks for the fortune telling. I'll be sure to note those Q4 07 predictions; I'm going to file them right next to the "Universal will go neutral in Q1 07" predictions.

PLEASE file them. We talk in Q407 again. Wanna make a $100.- bet?
Why even waste a thread on this? FOX is blue..

Some prefer speculating aka day dreaming about studios to get neutral and/or which exclusive title may be available for import on HD-DVD in Aserbaidschan instead of spending these wasted hours and hours on a decent after school job in order to afford a Blu-Ray player. Looking at the available studio content and the upcoming Q4 holiday season in particular makes a Blu-Ray player a no-brainer (if you can afford it).
Some goes for the other side - instead of wasting time speculating about if and when Universal goes neutral they should just go out and buy one of these $199.- A2s and be done with it - if they are really interested in Universal titles that is.
byronmhome 07-30-07, 09:09 AM I would imagine if its not on HD-DVD media us Xbox live marketplace people will still be able to rent it @ 720p.
I think this movie would look great in HD the HD trailers looked very good on HDNet. Plus it 2:35.1 and not 4:3 like the show. Even if some how sony lost tommorow. It'd take atleast a year to see any thing blu on HD-DVD. They still make UMDs and that's been dead for over a year. They keep trying to bring it back. Ghostridder was the last UMD I saw at BB.
Saw the movie this weekend and loved it! I can't wait for the BD release. I know I'll have to watch this one again a couple of times to catch all the jokes.
The HD trailers on XBLM looked great and I'm sure this will look fantastic on BD or HD-DVD. I just hope Fox gets their act together and starts releasing again in Q4. This one should definitely be a big holiday seller!

FS Film releases Fox's Blu-rays, so that's a no for Simpsons on HD DVD in Finland.
Simpsons isn't worth the money in HD. No detailed classic shaded cartoon.
Upscaled SD DVD will look as good as anything.
Fox is BR anyways (even though they don't produce product)

I said it was a major factor ... I'm a huge Simpsons fan. Other factors include the fact that I am a gamer, and that there are other Blu-ray exclusives that I'm also interested in. :)

Having seen the previews in HD...all I can say is no, this is not going to hold true. The colors in this thing are insanely vibrant, it's gorgeous in HD...heck, the trailer looked better on my TV than the movie did in the theater.

Theres a lot more to it than just affording it. I think its safe to say that anyone diving into any of this stuff has some expendable income....right? Poor people dont really buy lots of HD TVs and players so lets get rid of the "afford" argument.
So then, what is the issue? Heres some that come to mind for me anyways:
1) Extra piece of gear in the already filled equipment rack. A new player means another $400++ dollar equipment rack for me and many other guys. I dont stack gear or cram it where it really doesnt fit. This is huge with me.
2) More cables, wires, remotes. I know, HDMI is one cable but you have another power cord & another damned remote. Yeah, yeah, Universal remote command modules are great and they are also $$hundreds of dollars. Another expense not figured in then huh?
3) Which format do you buy a title in if its neutral? Sound like a stoopid reason? Well, I dont feel it is and at some point one of the two will get more titles making the other one only to be used with a handful of titles. Total waste, IMO.
So.... you see, its not just about the initial $400 BSP-300 player costs!

Thanks for your thoughtful contribution.
Now, explain how it will be worth it in HD ... Have you seen the movie? I saw it Saturday/ loved it/ never pay HD prices for it.
Yellow round shapes without texture won't get better. They might be cleaner/ crisper, but an upscaled SD should be fine.

Not to get off topic, but one thing I've been wondering...
Since software sales have been pretty close considering the only thing HD-DVD has that BD doesn't is Universal, how would sales be if ALL studios went neutral? My guess, based on current sales, would blow BD out of the water. I mean if BD has all the studios to choose from, and they are "on par" with HD-DVD sales ( sharing Warner and Paramount, but Universal exclusively) you would think adding Sony, MGM, Fox and Lionsgate would push sales through the roof (Hi-Def speaking of course!). Maybe I'm crazy. Who knows.
Anyway, back on topic, unless FOX gets on board with HD-DVD, it looks like slim pickin's on getting it anywhere else but SD or maybe BD if FOX gets back in the game.

Of course, if you get a PS3 you could loose the CD player, DVD Player, PS2, SACD Player and have space for additional components.
Of course, if you get a PS3 you could loose the CD player, DVD Player, PS2, SACD Player and have space for additional components.
Well as far as getting rid of stuff in place of a ps2. Most SACD players are driven by the 5.1-7.1 analog outs. Which the ps3 dosent offer. Most use multi-disc or deticated CD players as they sound better. The DVD player is already being used by the HD-DVD player. Or a better scaling player.
As far as the PS2 you could replace that. But unless you have a older model the ps3 won't fit their.. I'd imagine most Home theaters don't have gamming systems other them the ps3 for BD playback
So I can understand were another rack would come in to play. The ps3 also operates on bluetooth which I think is just stupid as it limits those with IR reapeters..
So as a BD player the ps3 is so-so for a home theater. But as a gamming system it could be good if they ever put any games on it. But as it stands their are no great exclusives to sell the system . It make me wonder if sony is holdding back games in a effort to further the sales on BD movies. As thiers all these kids with money and no games to buy. So what else is their movies of course.. The further question is wil the current crop of ps3s be able to meet new BD specs. The hardware is their. Can they upgrade it via firmware. Or is the recent price drop a secret effort by sony to sell the "old" players. Then com xmas put out full Bd spec players..
Now I do plan on getting a BD player but I'm waiting for so to put out a complete player. Something that will play all parts of the disc. So hopfully it will be a good xmas present for me. I also want on that can play back SACD via 5.1 analog outs. As my current amplifier doesn't have HDMI. Although the TV has 2.
As far as the simpsons movie on BD it would be great on HD-DVD as well. It would look great. Those who say it would not take a look a robin hood on HD-DVD. It has a few cartoon shorts from the 30s. They are 4:3 and aged a little but they look amazing. A movie like the simpsons that useds more bold colors mixed with cgi would look great. I've seem the HD-lite D* HD-Net stuff it still looks good. It look even better in "real" HD.
If I have a BD player buy then this will be a first for sure. That's if fox gets their act together by then...

I've seen an upconverted South Park EP and compared to the HD version available via Xbox Live and there is a stark difference...though the upconverted version still looks great the colors are so much crisper in HD and after seeing the difference I would prefer the HD version versus the upconverted version.

It might be helpful for you to not comment on things you do not know. First, the PS3 does SACD through the HDMI outputs, and it does it VERY well I might add. As a CD player, not many CD players upsample their audio to 176.4khz, but the PS3 does and it sounds better than the way more expensive dedicated CD player I had before. Lastly, make no assumption that the PS3 is just a gaming system. Gaming is just one part of what it can do overall.
So I can understand were another rack would come in to play. The ps3 also operates on bluetooth which I think is just stupid as it limits those with IR reapeters..
There is already a IR work around for the PS3. If you are going to make comments like this, stay informed!

Once again you are behind the curve. It has already been stated that the PS3 can be made fully 2.0 compliant with firmware upgrades. It is also the best blu-ray player out there as judge by many already. As far as games, I cannot comment, I don't play games on my PS3.
fistofsouth 08-02-07, 08:51 PM Of course, if you get a PS3 you could loose the CD player, DVD Player, PS2, SACD Player and have space for additional components.
He could also throw away his universal remote and his multi-channel audio media since the PS3 lacks an IR port and multi-channel outs.
The PS3 is said to be many things, but thus far it seems to work best as a Linux box. Not as good as say a $599 Mac Mini, which would run Linux, Mac, UNIX and Windows natively, but the PS3 is better as a Linux box than as anything else. It only has one "must-have" exclusive game so it sucks as a game system and we already mentioned (no IR port or multi-channel outs) why it would be out of place as a BD player in a high-end HT set-up.
