View Full Version : Need Advice Today! Pioneer Elite 1140 or Samsung FP-T5084???
taeisfun 07-30-07, 03:30 AM I've had my Elite 1140 for 2 weeks now. I got a great deal on it and I totally convinced myself that I didn't need a 1080p plasma for the next 5 years or so. I sit about 8 feet away. My setup is: OPPO 981, xbox 360, wii, hd cable, onkyo sr605. I will wait at least a year before buying blu-ray.
Everything was great until I saw that the Samsung FP-T5084 was going for $350 less than I paid for the 1140.
What should I do? What will give a better picture, Pioneer elite 1140 at 720p or Samsung 5084 at 1080p in terms of Oppo upconverting. Would blu-ray at 720p on the Elite look better than 1080p on the Samsung? How about non-hi-def cable and hd programming?
Would 720p on the 1140 look better than 720p on the Samsung?
Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated!
Exchange reasons:
I would save $350.
1080p vs 720p
Keep my Elite:
Because it is an Pioneer Elite television
Thanks much.

Thanks much,

I would go for the Samsung for the switch from 40 to 50inch- not because it's 1080p.
In which case- get the Pioneer 5080. The Samsung was on my list until I saw the pioneer.
Search online- the 5080 can be had cheaper than the Samsung.
wsfanatic 07-30-07, 11:30 AM bokes, the 1140 is the 50" Pioneer Elite. The Elite is one hell of a TV, if you are going to be sitting 7' or more away, you more than likely won't be able to resolve the extra detail from 1080p. You might also try outputting 1080p from the OPPO to the 1140, it does accept a 1080p signal. By outputting 720p, the set must interpolate 48 lines.
wsfanatic 07-30-07, 11:32 AM Depending on what you paid, the 5080 might garner some thought. The 1140 has better processors and a slightly more accurate green when calibrated but the 5080 has superior black levels.
russwong 07-30-07, 12:06 PM I can't speak for the samsung, but I have the 1140 and it's a great TV. At 8', you wont get the full benefits of 1080p if you have 20/20 vision. You need to be between 6' to 7' to gain from that. Would you see any benefit? Probably there will be a little...
As to spending the money for that, that's up to you.
My next question would be, are you sure you got a good price on your 1140? Why not get the 1150? You are able to get the 1150HD for just a little more then a lot of people are paying for the 1140. If I were buying now, I'd be the 1150 over the 1140, because the pricing I can get for the 1150 makes it worth while. If you are going to consider 1080p, the new 8g 1080p 5010FD or 110FD.

(a spill-over from a topic on another thread)
If one purchased an Elite, I'm thinking one major benefit of that line is how fine the PQ becomes with ISF calibration. So, if one isn't inclined to have the thing professionally calibrated, one loses some, if not much of the value associated with the difference in the cost between 1140 and the 5080.
taeisfun 07-30-07, 01:11 PM Is consensus that a 720p Elite will provide a better picture from 8 feet than 1080p with the new Samsung?
Isn't there added utility in the Samsung, knowing I'll buy blu ray in a year or so?
Basically I am staying under $2900- and you can see what the samsung is going for on CC.
PS- The 5080 isn't a better picture than the 1140 elite, is it?
Thanks guys,
Tae

The 1140 will have the more accurate colors when calibrated but the 5080's processor is superior. Add in the higher contrast and the 5080 will yield a better picture, esp if you have it calibrated. This year all Pioneers use the same processor and it is a big step up from last year.
Of course, you could go for the 1150 and have the best of both worlds!

I'd take the 5080 over the 1140, in fact I did even though it cost me $300 more. Only your eyes will tell you whether you need 1080p or 720p at 8'.
taeisfun 07-30-07, 05:02 PM For whatever reason, I got the impression that Bluray and hi def dvd's should only be played on 1080p's and not 720p's.

Creating that type of marketing buzz sells lots of new TVs.
russwong 07-30-07, 08:56 PM NO NO NO!!!!
That's just not true not true not true!!!!
The quality of the signal is probably the best way to get the best possible picture for your display. Garbage in = garbage out.
Feeding a non-1080p a good quality source like Blueray and HD-DVD is one of the best things you can do!!
Will it look better on a 1080p display? yes, IF, and only IF, you sit close enough, but to eliminate Blueray and HD-DVD because you don't have 1080p is just ignorance.
Just like it's ignorant for people who don't watch HD sources, becacuse they don't have HD TVs. I was watching HD on my 36" Sony Wega analog set for years and the quality of the source made it so much better then SD.
Do yourself a favor and get a BD or HD-DVD and enjoy the quality!
For whatever reason, I got the impression that Bluray and hi def dvd's should only be played on 1080p's and not 720p's.
taeisfun 07-31-07, 10:45 AM Thanks, I pretty much made up my mind. Choosing a 1080p Samsung over a 720p Elite is a bit ridiculous. I'm looking forward to buying a Blu ray player in about a year or so.
