View Full Version : The Landscape Afterwards???
Like many others here, I find myself spending far more time watching the status of the HD format war than I should... Which got me thinking:
What will we do when the format war is over??? :D
Which format war?
HD DVD vs BD is only the beginning. Whoever wins that war is going to have to be able to compete mid term with DVD, and long term with VOD. The question is which (if either) format is going to be able to even compete with DVD for marketshare.
Woodshed 07-30-07, 11:27 AM I picture crawling out of my hole, only to see a desolate landscape without vegetation. And a 10 story robot bearing (the HDM of your choice) moniker on it's chest destroying what is left of humanity.
Just my opinion.
danieledmunds 07-30-07, 11:54 AM I'm sure the nice companies will create 2 new competing toys that we can fight over to take our minds off debts, wars, corruption and diminishing rights.

Amen to THAT!

That's a little far fetched isn't it?
We all know that the robot will only be 8 stories but the moniker will be flashing.
There will be zombies walking the streets, dragging their obsolete (the format of your choice) players and trying to give away their disks to strangers

Nothing is stopping you from doing that now.
fire407 07-30-07, 01:08 PM You guys evidently aren't reading the forum enough. Neither Blu-ray nor HD DVD will be able to output 2 full HD streams for great 3D, so new formats will definitely be developed in the next 5 years--probably competing formats. These new formats could even be the next generation of these formats where 200 GB disks might be the norm. Home theaters with great 3D are going to be very popular in 10 years.
Icemage 07-30-07, 01:10 PM I would hope that by the time we get to the point where high definition becomes obsolete, we'll have some form of holographic display technology. In the mean time we'll get video downloads after the discs become obsolete.
As far as the membership here goes, I'd certainly hope more of us will come back to enjoying movies again instead of playing at sideline cheerleading.

Oh yeah a LOT is stopping me from doing that. I will not sit around and let tomfoolery go unchallenged. It's the defensive minded person in me.

Sorry, but... what? :)
That's a lot of effort to defend the purchase of a source of entertainment. Why does it need to be such an adversarial view? Are people who buy the discs of a color other than the ones you own going to storm your house and steal the discs away from you?
I think the format war has gone to everyone's heads. We need to try harder to remember that we're here because we love movies, not just because we love technology. Lately it seems like there are more people who are interested in the daily soap opera that is this forum than they are in actually watching a movie in high definition.

We will keep on arguing about semantics of something (DLP vs LCoS, LCD vs Plasma, Paris Hilton vs Lindsey Lohan)

And be enjoying HD DVD titles like The 5th Element.

No, people who love movies are over on IMDB. AVS is mostly people who love technology---that's why everyone is fighting.

Hmm... good point. But what's the use of all the tech if you have no discs to play on the hardware? Some of the combatants seem to have lost touch, or lost hope lately.
None of these discussions matter. It's just something we're doing to pass the time, and all these people pushing for pistols at dawn over discs that can't even be told apart from a casual glance need a serious reality check.

Actually I don't think that would have been necessary, but the specs would have to allow for outputting twice the number of frames. I.e. the BluRay or HDDVD player would output 1080p48 (or 96 or..you get the drift - more frames equal more stable picture anyways). With a proper display system and glasses, it should be possible to use this for great effect.
Wikipedia on Disney 3d:
The movie is projected digitally, with a single Christie, Barco or NEC DLP Cinema projector (other digital projection technologies would work as well if fitted with the proper equipment) at 144 frames per second, six times as fast as a normal movie. Every 1/24th of a second (the projection frame rate for normal 2-D movies on film) the two scene views called "right eye" and "left eye" are each shown 3 times (6 flashes of image on the screen matching the 6-times-higher projection rate). Due to persistence of vision, the 72 image frames and 72 black frames fed to each eye in a given second should be perceived as a relatively flicker free image.
In front of the projector lens, an electronic device, the Z-Screen, developed by Lenny Lipton, from Stereographics, inserts a polarizing screen that matches the polarization of either the right lens or left lens of the glasses worn by the audience. When the left-eye-matching Z-Screen is in place, the viewer's right eye sees nothing at all (or almost nothing) while the left eye sees a normal looking frame. For the next frame of the movie, the Z-Screen swaps the polarizing screen to match the right eye lens in the glasses worn by the audience. Now the audience sees nothing (or nearly nothing) with the left eye and a normal but slightly shifted version of the frame in the right eye. The brain knits together the alternating left-right perspectives into a seamless 3-D view of the movie scene.

The diminishing rights part is only true if you're a terrorist, so please, stay inside and watch movies (like Rules of Engagement :D )

LCoS...
whoops, er, couldn't resist! :)
Seriously tho, I think there'll be a big market in upscaling HD to 4K and also 3D - basically whatever the theaters do next for business will be what the home gear will try to tackle next, I suspect.
Bailey151 08-01-07, 03:44 PM Thanks cybereality, funniest post I've seen around here in a long time :D
