View Full Version : Dual Format HDDVD...Why?

This is kind of a rant, but why in the heck do they make dual format discs? If I wanted the DVD version of the movie, I'd go out and buy that. I'm just really confused as to why HDDVD is doing this. IMHO it ruins the collectibility of the disc.

The reason behind the dual format is to get people that are on the fence to buy hd-dvd instead of buying a sd then buying a hd-dvd later. I think it makes since ,because everybody don't have a hd-dvd player in every room like most have sd dvd players.

Personally aside from the extra cost I like the idea of it. If HD DVD flopped & Blu Ray won the battle you still have something playable on a standard player. If you had the Blu Ray disk your just left in the cold.

As far as being collectible, whats the point? I have a pretty good DVD collection but I don't consider them collectible. Heck once you buy it & open it up it no longer worth much more than five or ten bucks. Unless it goes OOP than maybe it would fetch a few more bucks.

Combo's make sense when they are at a small premium above the standard HD DVD pricing. The problem is many stores are charging full retail so you're seeing $34.98 movie pricing which is hard for consumers to swallow.

I agree it's worthless. Now if the movie was released on a dual-format ONLY and priced the same as a standard DVD, then it would make sense. As it stands right now, not too many standard DVD people will pay the extra cash for a dual-format version for when/if they upgrade to HD-DVD in the future.

It's almost guaranteed anything discussed has already been discussed in any of the above threads....at this point a generic combo thread is no different another another Friday the 13th movie...it's all redundant

Here's a generic general search using "combo" as the search word

Combos make absolutely no sense when a standard DVD is also offered for the film.

Exactly. I refuse to buy combo discs and to this day don't own any.
