HD vs Blue ray aside, those of you that have one format or even both, what are your habits when purchasing dvds? do you only get titles that you dont already own? or perhaps a select few titles that you already owned on SD dvd, but want to have in the new format. so what happens to those old SD dvd's that are now obsolete in your collection because you bought the same movie in HD or Blue ray?

so far the only title that I now own 2 copies of is batman begins. but it seems like as the studios re release titles in their chosen format, i regret having worked on my movie collection over the past couple of years before I made the jump into HD (and soon to be blue ray at christmas time)

your thoughts...

I am a collector of all things shiny so I rebuy anything I plan on watching again as I want the best presentation I can get. I have probably double dipped (from SD to HD) on ~half of my 200+ discs

I dont have any obsolete discs..I still have DVD players in my cars, laptops etc..Oh wait those HD DVD combos are curing some of that :)

Do you know where I can find more info on doing this? I have a stack of 20 or so DVDs I was going to sell. I was going to sell my Xbox, 4 controllers and like 7 or 8 games, wonder if they could use that too.

My ratio of purchases is about 1 to 5- new vs old/replacement.
I've owned a lot of DVDs in my life, and sold off quite a few- and still have about 800 or so.
I love that not only is the PQ/AQ better with the HD versions, but the disc cases are smaller too- which frees up a lot of precious space.
For that reason I'll replace as much and as often as possible.

Ususally I sell off the old dvds, if I can get anything for it. I've given a few away too.
Right now I have several huge boxes filled with discs I want to get rid of, but are so low priced new that there is no way It would be worth the effort to put them up on ebay.

Shipping them off to Iraq is something I haven't thought of, but might in the future.

I have no interest in re-buying at the current prices, and I am certainly not alone as the current dismal sales of catalog titles shows. I expect the catalog attach rate to go even lower as the formats transition out of the early adopter phase.

I am actually excited about seeing what movies that I love look like now. It also does help me clear out space. If I look through and wonder What the hell was I thinking! when I bought that disc. I just sell it to gamespot or ebay and enjoy the movies in HD.

Only about 10. But they were either movies I really liked or ones I got via the free disc promo. As many of them I had.
Most of the rebuys were of discs that fell within the 0 or1 of the teir thead as well...

But I've passed on a few for now. As I'm waiting on full collection or for lower prices.

I upgrade, but I have 2000 DVDs, some don't deserve an upgrade, some will never see HDM.

So I guess I will be selective.

I try to be selective...only the films I know I really like to watch. But it's hard...I want to watch one of my lesser films, and if I know it's in HD it's very tempting. i certainly am re-buying more than I had planned.

I'm still buying 1-2 SD DVDs per week, and 1-2 HD titles per month.

My wish-list of coming SD titles is around 30, HD around 4.

I still buy DVDs.
Some titles won't be available in any HD format for years to come.

When I first started buying HD discs, over a year ago, I did buy a few duplicates, mostly to support the format, Now I rarely double dip, only for special movies, plus I have to be sure it will be a major jump in quality.
I still watch mostly DVDs, and probably buy 4-6 a month, and maybe 1-2 HD discs a month.

I go out of my way to not re-purchase catalogue titles I already own on DVD, concentrating instead on new day-and-date releases or catalogue titles I don't already own (like "The Big Lebowsky"). Out of almost 40 HD-DVD's the only double-dips for me have been "Goodfellas" and "Superman: The Movie," with the strong possibility that "Casino" will be my third when I can track it down cheap. Money is tight so the HD version of an SD DVD has to be universally acclaimed as leaps-and-bounds better than upconverted DVD for me to even consider double-dipping. :(

all but 3 of my my HD DVD's have all been double dips. After seeing an HD version the SD version just becomes too unwatchable :D. All I can think about is the detail I'm missing. lol.

I’ve just sent about 40 DVD’s to DVD Planet in exchange for credit. I’ll selectively re-buy HD versions of the ones I know will garner repeat viewings.

For those re-buying HD movies to replace DVD movies . . .

How many times, on the average, did you watch the DVD you are replacing?

anywhere from 1-24 times depending on the movie.

"Goodfellas": 5-6 times.

"Superman: The Movie": way too many to count (at least 25), but I'm keeping the DVD anyways since there's a 30 min. 'making of' documentary (one of three) on the DVD not included in the HD-DVD/Blu-ray versions (which have two of the three).

"Casino": two times (my HD addiction started around the time I got it on DVD and I can't watch it anymore thinking of all the detail I'm missing :().

:applause: very kind of you!

I haven't got this problem yet, but looking at my .flac collection, I purchased alot of albums more than once on cassete, than on cd. I'll probably replace my 16 bit .flac files someday when they become available as HDCD or 24/96 .flac downloads.

It depends on the movie.
I will say, that Warriors of Heaven and Earth is my only triple dip (R3, R1, BD). I don't know how many times I've seen it-I lost track. That said, even double dips are rare for me, and only for movies I really like.
