need advice on lcd or plasma, debating.
application - finished lower level, 8'6" ceiling. no direct reflection from sliders or windows. use is standard viewing with broadcast and dvd. 42" to hang on wall.
Hdmi and component hookups ready
most reliable, picture quality - which brands are recommended?
I am forced to stick in the $1200-$1400 range (college soon for daughter - ouch)
thanks

I recommend plasma for these small reasons:

Plasma Pro's:
Vibrant, Accurate Colors over LCD
Home Theater Like Image
Better Off-Axis Image
Produces Less Heat than LCD

LCD Pro's:
1080p models are lower priced over plasma
Whites are crisp
Very bright screen
Slightly more heat
Reduces Glare Better than plasma

Look into Pioneer 4270/4280, Panasonic 42PX75U, or Samsung 4254.

These are great units to start with....

If you can raise your budget, get the Pioneer 4280. Otherwise I vote for the Panasonic 42PX75U.

The OP should have asked his question in the "LCD or Plasma? Plasma or LCD? and why those Black Bars? Discuss it here only Please" thread, http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=767932

Creemail, Vibrant, Accurate Colors over LCD & Home Theater Like Image are opinions. You will find these debated over and over.

As for heat, the fact is PDPs generate more heat than LCDs.

Overall I would suggest the plasma.

and your latter point is also debated over and over, i.e., "more heat" is not an indisputable fact either. Sometimes 10%-20% hotter, and even that isn't always necessarily true. Sometimes an lcd will actually run hotter. People mistake plasma listed wattage ratings as their norm when in fact it is a maximum figure which is rarely met. I won't belabor the pt. beyond that, but just wanted to make the newbies aware that this isn't an automatic pro or con for either lcd or plasma. Context of your actual video content (darker scenes require much less power from plasmas than bright scenes do, whereas lcds consume a more constant rate no matter what the on-screen content) and the specific models being compared is required to make a useful comparison).

Please post a link to a technical report or professional review that states LCDs run hotter than plasmas (of equal sizes). I'm not disputing that you can find one, I've just never seen any technical report/review stating PDPs generate less heat than an equal sized LCD. This is not normally an issue for a person to use as a discriminator.
