View Full Version : POLL: Had to re-purchase SD disc after HD purchase? lockheede 07-31-07, 06:46 PM Just curious... nyg 07-31-07, 06:50 PM With the exception of the DVD season sets of Everybody Loves Raymond, I haven't purchased any SD DVDs in 3-4 years. Ain't no way in hell I'd ever go back now, pre or post Blu-ray. :D lockheede 07-31-07, 06:53 PM With the exception of the DVD season sets of Everybody Loves Raymond, I haven't purchased any SD DVDs in 3-4 years. Ain't no way in hell I'd ever go back now, pre or post Blu-ray. :D Not really a matter of going back...what if you wanted to take a movie with you that you only had in HD on a trip or to a relative's house and no HD player was available... nyg 07-31-07, 06:59 PM Not really a matter of going back...what if you wanted to take a movie with you that you only had in HD on a trip or to a relative's house and no HD player was available... My friends and family know I'm an HD addict. When we watch movies together it happens at my house in my HT. :) I also haven't felt the need to take a movie with me on a trip. Movies aren't my idea of a vacation. :p cybereality 07-31-07, 07:01 PM Not really a matter of going back...what if you wanted to take a movie with you that you only had in HD on a trip or to a relative's house and no HD player was available...Thats the beauty of the HD-DVD Combo format. lockheede 07-31-07, 07:05 PM My friends and family know I'm an HD addict. When we watch movies together it happens at my house in my HT. :) I also haven't felt the need to take a movie with me on a trip. Movies aren't my idea of a vacation. :p Well you're an exception then... My 83 year old grandmother was basically stuck in the house so I would bring the entertainment to her. When I need to fly somewhere, I like to have some type of entertainment with me for the flight or layovers... UxiSXRD 07-31-07, 07:12 PM I haven't bought SD DVD in almost 2 years now and have no intention of changing that ever. obispo21 07-31-07, 07:24 PM I still buy a fair number of SD DVDs (selection is simply too small to be HD-only), but I haven't bought an SD DVD version of a movie I already have on BD / HD DVD. I do have a number of SD DVDs that I *kept* after upgrading to HD though - due to extras (e.g. Kingdom of Heaven, Hellboy, King Kong). bart122580 07-31-07, 07:32 PM After I watch it in HD, I don't want to watch it in SD. SDouglas 08-01-07, 01:04 AM I'll go one better: Not only do I not need a DVD version of an HDM disc that I have, I have yet to watch the DVD side of an HD DVD/DVD combo release even when it is available to me. SCD kowhite 08-01-07, 02:27 AM I don't buy SD anymore. donricouga 08-01-07, 10:35 AM Do not buy SD anymore. If I want another tv with another player, i'll just buy another player. Luckily i live in a condo, so i only have my main viewing area. rlsmith 08-01-07, 07:58 PM The combo is such a nice idea. It is ideal for families with multiple systems. I really don't understand why it is so hated. There is an editorial up on AVS right now saying that the combo is "killing" HD DVD. I don't buy it. Subotnik 08-01-07, 08:51 PM I don't remember the last time I ever loaned someone a movie or wanted to take one with me while traveling, so there's no desire on my part to own an SD copy of an HD movie. If, for some reason, I really felt the need, I'd probably rent and rip it rather than buy something I'll probably only ever watch once or twice. eapleitez 08-01-07, 08:52 PM The combo is such a nice idea. It is ideal for families with multiple systems. I really don't understand why it is so hated. There is an editorial up on AVS right now saying that the combo is "killing" HD DVD. I don't buy it. It's the extra cost, which I agree is a royal pain to myself and overall adoption. If combos didn't cost any extra, it wouldn't be an issue (and it would be an actual plus), except to those people that just HAVE TO have disc art. jpco 08-01-07, 09:37 PM With kids and multiple SD players, my purchases are as follows: 1. Just for adults, HD or Combo 2. For family w/combo available, Combo 3. For family w/no combo available, SD Although I don't like the extra cost of the combo, it is a very good option for some titles. If they would only put out separate HD, SD, and Combo discs for $5 more, I think HD DVD would be on to something. As it stands, the $5 isn't a killer if I want both formats. ClevelandRob 08-01-07, 10:07 PM I don't even like forking out for HD titles! I'm a renter... If I really want an SD, I'll go to my library (huge DVD collection). nick1091 08-02-07, 09:53 AM I'll go one better: Not only do I not need a DVD version of an HDM disc that I have, I have yet to watch the DVD side of an HD DVD/DVD combo release even when it is available to me. SCD Agreed, with the exception I was actually forced to watch the last part of Children of Men on the SD side when the HD side got glitchy on me. balanceofpower 08-02-07, 08:57 PM I don't even like forking out for HD titles! I'm a renter... If I really want an SD, I'll go to my library (huge DVD collection). Wise words. I also have a local library with a large dvd collection of over 1000 movies. You can rent up to 7 a week for free! Granted, there's only one copy of each movie but for free it's really hard to complain. GeorgeLV 08-02-07, 09:53 PM Yes, I needed to replace a few Universal HD DVDs when I went Blu-ray exclusive. |
