I'm sticking with my 4 year old CRT HDTV for a little longer. However, my DVD player has just broken. Everyone seems to be looking for/talking about upconverting players with HDMI. How about if you only have component video?

Anyone here know what player to go with if you want the best possible upconverting for a still really good (IMHO) HDTV that just doesn't have any ins other than component video? Best possible for littlest cost, of course :p (I'm figuring best that can be done with component ins must be in the $75-$150 range or something)

I can vouch for the Oppo 970HD...of course you will have to apply the patched firmware to get upconversion via component. There may be others out there but I don't think any of them will do it out of the box for obvious reasons. (no HDCP on component)

Also try finding a Zenith DVB318 on Amazon or Ebay if still available. Less than the Oppo but will likely also need the firmware change to enable Component upconversion.

If you had more money to throw at it you could get one of these:

I have a 318 and the LG 418. The 970 is an all-around better player, IMO. In some instances you'll see jaggies but they are few and far between. And you get a universal player with the 970. If your set on Faroudja, AND saving money, then go for a 418 refur'd on ebay. Not that you'll need to re-flash the firmware for it as you will any of the 970, 318 or 418. (318 bought on ebay might already upconvert).
Best,
