View Full Version : Eye Conditions for watching HDTV at a certain distance

Hi. I'm visually impaired with a visual acurity of 20/200 in my right eye but blind in my left eye with no light perception (my mom says I have a visual acurity of 20/400 on my right eye but whoa--big print...) and I have a question that is located in the bottom of my post.

Currently, as I browse the forum and type, I'm looking at 6" with my Magnavox 32" (that I'm about to replace soon). This is with 1280x720. However, if I watch TV with subtitles on, I view between 6" to 1'.

So if I have a 50" HDTV, I'd do the same with 1280x720, but sometimes between 6" to 1', so when I watch TV, it'd be between 1' to 2' and that's not a bad thing for me but it's just a matter of personal preference.

About 50", the reason why I go with that is so I can see better when laying in bed while watching a movie at night, but that's not the point about the eye condition.

Bigger pixel size is not a bother for visual impairement like me, but I didn't like a screen door effect, which I'd go for DLP so I can get a clear text when using a computer.

In the manual for HL-T5076S, the manual states I must be at 5.9" for 50". Does it matter with any eye conditions, considering that I am blind in my left eye?

In my experience, doubling the size of the tv does not double the viewing distance that I can clearly see the tv. I can read subtitles on my 20" tv at 3' without glasses, but I need to wear my glasses to read subtitles on my 46" tv at 7'. The proportion of tv-size to distance is nearly the same, but the raw distance seems to have a much bigger effect than tv size in my ability to read subtitles without my glasses.

But my eyes aren't too bad, and it probably depends on the condition.

OK, so it's not a matter if must or should, but recommendation from the owner's/user manual.

That makes sense, since for me it'd be hard for me to read subtitles from the distance mentioned in the manual.

Thanks! :)
