This is with HDMI, not component, right?

Just guessing: the message was from your display when the Oppo was sending a resolution the display does not support. Do you know if the display accepts all of 480i, 480p, 720p and 1080i?

If you keep cycling through the resolutions with the HDMI button it should get back to the ones the display supports. Or, connect composite or s-video cables, switch the display to those and adjust the player settings there, them switch back to HDMI.

It's the same issue. When you change resolutions the player steps through 480i->480p->720p->1080i and back to 480i. If your display does not accept one or more of these resolutions over component you will get no image and perhaps a warning message.

This presumes the player upscales over component, either because the disc has no CSS or some firmware hack has been applied. Else, you are limited to 480i and 480p.
