Chartered hints at 45nm Xbox chip
Chia said the design of the 45nm video-game processor is not yet complete, and hinted that production of the CPU - as well as other products designed for the 45nm process - is not likely to begin until late 2008 or early 2009.
"As 65nm just started production in the last two quarters, you would expect 45nm to come on stream about 18 months from that timeframe," said Chia, referring to when Chartered expects to begin production with the 45nm processor.
excellent... welcome to about 3 months ago.

UHH... NO SIR, that was both rude and inaccurate. Microsoft is just now making the improved 65nm procs but this is the first we've heard of plans to shrink it down to the minurature size of 45nm proc. At that size Microsoft could possibly even shrink down the box, kind of like a slim PS2.
Peace,
Dreamaster
jasonstiller 08-01-07, 02:21 PM Dammit, they just keep evolving it.
We need dates on when the 65nm boxes will be available.
Redoryx 08-01-07, 02:36 PM We need dates on when the 65nm boxes will be available.
i have a hunch that they will be in the "NEW" TOP SPIN bundle coming out on the 12th.
Great. Now we'll have to put up with 1000 posts about "waiting for 45nm" before someone buys.
Redoryx 08-01-07, 02:44 PM I'll just settle for a price cut :D
assasyn 08-01-07, 03:06 PM tronn should apologize admonish.

"Chartered said that it is also working on yet more advanced 45nm chip making technology, but has not said whether this will be applied to Xbox CPU production when it becomes available."
your absolutly right. it was 3 months and 1 year ago!
you also know that after 65nm there will be the 45nm. then guess what... the 30nm. but by the time that rolls around the next Microsoft console will be out and will start out with the 65nm process. then continue downwards again. its called process evolution.
btw I'm fine and happy with my launch 360. by the time my system just keels over and the 3 year warranty expires I will be glad in knowing I could pick up another system for under $200.
so no apology needed, just the facts ma'am.

It was a rumor then.
oh ok well let me start another... MS is planning a 30nm chip. that's right I said it. big deal.

and then a 15nm....... ;)
hahaha... well all right... if anyone was hurt then I'm sorry...*wipes tear* to the OP... WOW, WOOT! OMG! really? a 45nm! awesome I'm waiting for the 45nm chips! The system will run cold enough to chill beverages instead of frying eggs! Great post OP! You deserve a gold star!
;-)
krimson 08-01-07, 04:43 PM I'm personally holding out for the chips made of anti-matter that run at absolute zero temps!

0 degrees Kelvin FTW!
Somehow I feel like the Xbox 720 will be ready for release before the 45nm chips are ready for production.

Awesome man, awesome! :D
It's important to realize the only benefit of this new process is lower power consumption and lower heat dissipation.
Shrinking the die doesn't make the processor faster or more powerful.
This being said, since 360s have been having a lot of overheating issues, this will be a welcome step.

ugh, I'm so tired of posts like this. If you did a search on this forum there'd probably be 100s or even thousands of posts where the only thing the person has said is 'welcome to last week' or 'welcome to a month ago'. Whatever, no reason to bump the thread just b/c you already knew something.

Complaining about this is so last year.

You should check out the Blu-Ray forums sometime. Its 50 times worse......if you dont do a research report on every thread in the last 6 months before posting, someone will call you on it and make a smart a$$ response.

assasyn 08-02-07, 04:16 PM Engadget is reporting 45nm chips by 4Q '07.
beezdeez 08-02-07, 05:11 PM I'm sweet because I know the entire history of the 360 and like to bash anyone who slips up and posts mildly old news. Meanwhile, I have no social skills and my only friends are my overweight cat and collection of anime.
Good post man. It was interesting to read and I haven't heard of this until now. I heard of the 65, but not of 45.
Complaining about this is so last year.
