i have this dvd player (dvd-ns75h):

http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Sony-DVD-Player-DVP-NS75H/sem/rpsm/oid/146242/catOid/-12873/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

and i bought an hdmi cord from monoprice. i first had a phillips hdmi cord i got locally, but took it back when i found out about the monoprice cords. anyway, the dvd player ran fine off of the hdmi phillips cord, but the first movie with the monoprice cord at about 45 minutes the screen went blank. it came back on about 30 seconds later. then i watched another movie and at about 45 minutes in all of the colors inverted randomly for about 30 seconds before returning to a normal state.

does that sound like it could be the dvd player or the cord? i am just wondering if i should also take the dvd player back anyway and exchange it for another simply because i'm within my 30-day circuit city warrantee?

You could exchange it, or return it knowing that this is the old model replaced with the DVP-NS77H (http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Sony-Upconversion-DVD-Player-Black-DVP-NS77HB/sem/rpsm/oid/186042/catOid/-12873/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do) which is on sale for $95 at CC.

Take it back to CC but take the HDMI cable with you. Before you exchange the DVD player, see if you can get them to let you check out your cable on one of their set-ups. They should be willing to do that. That way you (and they) will know if the exchange is necessary. Just a thought...

what is different about that one over the old model, just out of curiosity?

oh, and i don't know how to make the blacking out or inversing of colors happen again.

Newer MTK video chip supporting 1080P, new case design, comes in Black, JPEG resolution at HD.

Is the 77 still considered the best player for the money in this price range?
Think Im going to pick one up on Friday.

what if my tv only plays in 1080i, would it matter that the dvd player CAN play 1080p?

Think Im going to pick one up on Friday. Its recommended, the only real negatives with player is the status icon when in zoom mode not disappearing, and that its a bit slow (16 secs) bringing up the DVD menu, but quite fast afterwards. PQ at 1080i excellent, 1080p barely grainy.

Its up to you, take a look at the new one at the store and compare.

16 seconds to bring up the DVD menu?
You mean upon loading a disc for the first time, not every time I push the menu button, right?
(disclaimer: please disregard any of my idotic noobie questions) :p

i went ahead and bought the new one. i figured i may as well. i hooked up the hdmi to my dish network and man it looked a lot better than component hookups. so my question is whether or not there is a way to hook up two hdmi devices with only having one hdmi input...like an adapter that splits it into two different units depending on which one is on. it's a long shot and i suspect there is no such thing, but i figured i would ask. my hitachi f59 only has one hdmi input.

You simply use a HDMI manual or automatic switch.
