I really do not know what to do with the sharpness setting on my Panasonic TH-50PX60U. I know that you are supposed to use the overscan test to set sharpness levels right. Well the problem is, that on my set unless I go past +17 (settings are from -30 to +30, 0 is the middle) the ringing, halos and edge enhancement begin to occur. I have seen that many Panasonic owners have their sharpness settings from -10 to -20, I've tried these settings but they soften up the picture quite a lot. So calibration wizards and Panny owners, if the edge enhancement starts to show up at +17. Should I just leave the sharpeness setting a 0? BTW this is on the HD DVD DVE version.

Greetings
If you do not get halos or edge enhancement until 17 ... then 15 is just fine for a setting.
Regards

THANK YOU - LJ25 - for warning me in advance of this! It seems that Joe Kane Productions hasn't learned that you can't turn a screw with a hacksaw! They still insist on setting sharpness with that overscan pattern, eh LJ?
There is a pattern that I use for setting sharpness with the standard DVE - if what's left of my memory serves me it's chapter 13.4 through 13.6 - "multiburst" or sweep pattern. It looks like vertical lines increasingly closer together from left to right.
First, turn off any and all edge enhancement on your set, including anything that is the Panasonic equivalent of "dnie". Start with the sharpness all the way down with your HD setup - then raise sharpness until you see a change in a section or sections of the pattern; that is where you stop raising the sharpness control. No two brands will effect the same section of the pattern - the frequency effected most by the sharpness(peaking) control will vary by mfg.
Good luck,
