View Full Version : Is there a VCR replacement like PVR?
linetest 08-02-07, 07:42 AM I want to buy some type of DVR to carry around while vacationing and camping. I may need to use it with Satellite or cable. Is there such a beast? With a simple VCR like connection between whatever may be converting the signal for the TV and the TV itself? I can't seem to find one that's not either proprietary (DirecTV) or has a fixed fee per month (I may use this machine only 2-3 weeks per year). Maybe I should just buy a new VCR if I can find one? Thanks.
See the DVD Recorders forum.

howdydooit 09-17-07, 11:32 PM You might look at Archos. Some of their products have S-Video and / or composite video in/out, some with wifi support, etc. http://www.archos.com/products/gen_5/index.html?country=global&lang=en
cinemascope 09-18-07, 03:03 AM If you can find one, Pioneer had a very useful machine with a Tivo DVR and a DVD recorder in the same chassis.
Look for a used one in great shape from a private party or a repuatable B&M, preferably with the lifetime subscription on the Tivo.
catzilla 09-18-07, 07:12 PM Is the Neuro OSD work like DVR, can be programmed, scheduled to record any channel that I want?

The OSD will allow you to record from any standard video source with RCA or S-video output (DVD player, VCR, cable box, DVR, ...). It has an IR blaster to change channels on the video source for scheduled recordings. Since it does not have a Tuner or an EPG, it is not a DVR, but it is a good option if you want to record content in the MP4 format on an external HDD or a networked drive. (Disclaimer: I work for Neuros)

I think the Pio's might've had that, too. At least the more expensive Elite.
Humax made them, too, but I don't think they had the free service.
But if you're vacationing or camping you'd better have a phone line or internet connection handy to use one.
