adamuncw 08-02-07, 02:39 PM I have the same question, I am between the Toshiba and Mitsubishi. The Toshiba 65hm169 is at a good price point, and looks solid from what I have seen. The WD-65733 around the same price is also a solid TV.
With either one you have to worry about lamp life.
Any suggestions?
cantina_fly 08-02-07, 02:40 PM Since I was just shopping recently. $2K is a little low for 65" the cheapest (only) 65" I saw was the Mitsubishi WD-65733 at my local BB. For $2K, I saw a lot more good sets in the 56-60" range. I went with a 61" Samsung for 2.5K, but my GF liked the 57" Mitsubishi (mostly because it was on sale for $XXXX)
I'd go with smaller higher quality set over cheaper and bigger if you're shopping based on a fixed $$$ amount.
And what I found also, is unless you're a videophile who nuances every shortcoming of a picture, you'll be hard pressed to tell the difference between different sets in the same price range.
$.02
I also have the same question and have been shopping and reading for weeks. Cantina which Samsung did you buy? I am looking at samsung, Mits and Sony. The dlp's look great but I'm so confused now. I also would buy the smaller tv with better quality if I had a $2,000 budget, just my .02.

Do you mean the 65HM167(the newer model with 3 HDMi inputs)? i picked up one from $XXXX total delivered. I got the extended warranty from tapeworks for around $210 so my grand total(including tax , delivery, and extended warranty) was just over $XXXX
adamuncw 08-02-07, 03:02 PM Yeah I am looking real hard at getting that one, it's $XXXX plus I have 10% off that as well. It has gotten pretty good reviews from what I have read on this forum
I am going to use it in a media room with viewing distance of about 8 - 12 feet. Watch mostly DISH, xbox 360, and movies.
steinfire 08-02-07, 03:14 PM I was back and forth between Toshiba and Mitsubishi and ended up getting the new model mitsi 65734 .

gridpool 08-04-07, 10:26 PM So I came across the ws-65733 ... It supports deep color after all and maybe this will mean something down the road... Should we include the service plan price on these things? At about $250 the plan will include 1 lamp replacement and any "problems" like the whine or buzzing others have reported. At this price, I am on the cusp of upgrading from my ws-65819 analog set but I can't pull the trigger. It is the same price as the 57" model in the store at the moment. I need some encouragement...

ThumperII 08-05-07, 07:52 PM 61" DILA tvs for under $XXXX delivered. I own one and very much enjoy it. JVC does not currently ship any 65" tvs.
I bought the WD-65734 a week ago . Great set.
Fragster 08-06-07, 12:20 PM Hijacking this thread :D .
In the same boat as the OP....purchase time is within 6 weeks as soon as my new house is ready for move-in.
Needs are 65" as the minimum. I saw some 61" sets in the store right next to 65" so I know the 4" does make a difference.
Anyway, I have it narrowed it down to::
1) Toshiba 65HM167 (best bang for the buck)
2) Mit-WD65734 (appears to be better than Tosh)
3) Mit WD-Y657 (newer CCity set with 1.3 HDMI)
4) JVC HD-70FN97 LCos (slightly more but more screen size plus LCos tech)
I'm sure the price can be haggled on all 3, making it around $2k give or take. Anyway, Toshiba seems to get good reviews but seems to have bulb failures on a higher scale than the competitors (reviews are like "awesome TV WHILE it lasted"); WD65734 appears to have a softer picture and other tech issues like fan or system board failures and bulbs are more expensive; WD-Y657 is probably too new a set for reviews at this moment. JVC's Lcos seems to have heavy SSE that can be reduced but not eliminated. Picture also appears softer than DLP's.
All in all, all seem to share similar hardware issues (either with bulb or other circuitary failures). While Toshiba customer support sounds easy to deal with, the set is being phased out. Mitsubishi's CS seems to be lacking in a lot of places, from reading the horror stories on the WD-7XX threads. I can't find either reports on JVC's CS.
I've left the Sammy DLP's out as I have 2 2007 DLP's in the family circle and both are plagued with constant service calls....issues with defective color wheels, bulb, system board, fans, etc......my in-law's just had the Sammy replaced with a plasma set after several complains to CCity.
Sorry for the long rea but wanted to contribute my findings and help other members that are looking for a $2000 projection set.
Any feedback from fellow owners of the sets I've mentioned above?
Appreciated

Sorry it the rules.
DJ Kuul A 08-06-07, 01:11 PM I'm in the market for a 65hm167 as well. Within the posting guidelines, I'd be interested in hearing about good or bad experiences that people have had ordering it from the better-known online retailers.
My Mitsubishi died way prematurely -- I'm avoiding them, much as I like their PQ.
Samsung makes a 67 inch a little more than the $2000 price range. Costco has it on there website (stand included i believe) for about 2100 shipped. Check it out

Sure don't see it on Costco's website, maybe it's gone already?
quaiboy 09-27-07, 09:27 PM Same boat. Looked at the Tosh 65hm167 and the Mitsu 65733 side-by-side at BB today. Both were at price limit set by the OP, same price - not that I will pay that for either. The Mitsu looked better to my eyes, however they always look different at home. Very similar picture, however the Toshiba screen seems to be in a different finish that looks almost 'sparkly'. Caused a lot more SSE than the Mitsu. I'm sure it can be adjusted away but I was surprised how apparent it was at first blush. Both had excellent off-angle viewing which I was pleased with since we don't all watch TV in the same place.
I am also hesitant to buy a Mitsu because of CS horror stories on this forum. I'll be using a CC with 2 year protection though so that helps.
From what I've read, to summarize:
Toshiba: Can be had rather cheaply, possible bulb issues (although workarounds posted), decent CS, leaving the RP game, greater SSE
Mitsu: Bulbs and parts more expensive, whine/noise issues OOB, crappy CS, less SSE
I'll probably go with the Toshiba and return wherever I buy it if the PQ doesn't cut it.

andy sullivan 09-27-07, 09:33 PM Toshiba has announced that it will drop out of the DLP market next year, as did Hitachi.

Own that tv - 6756w. Costco had a coupon making it around the 2k mark. Early thoughts on it- HUGE the diff between 60 & 61 sets and this monster is huge. HD is spectacular, while SD is lacking severly. Known geometry issues with bowing and tickers. Other than that have had no issues. Still on the fence as to if I'm keeping it. Thought of returning this beast is overwhelming....
Ergoguy34 09-30-07, 10:24 AM I went with a sammy 6188 and I have never looked back Its been a great DLP furthermore I picked it up for way under $2k, look around at your local CC & BB they usually have a few new in the box out back..

Ain't it the truth. Gotta wonder how many folks put up with issues for this reason....

Sorry about that.
I just had Eliab calibrate my Toshiba 65HM167 and the picture is fantastic!
