I have a 2003 Sony Grand Wega III (KF-50WE610) which developed a green blob (smudge) which is viewable on dark backgrounds. Its a few inches to the left of the Sony logo and about 1/3 of the way up the screen from the bottom. So, just left of center and lower than center of screen.

Called out the service center, talked to Sony countless hours on the phone and am looking at a $1500 bill, that Sony has agreed to pay $900 of. They will NOT cover this under the service bulletin E34500176...because I have the 2003 model year set.

My questions are as follows:
#1. Any changes to the new optical block? Will this problem just come back on the new block in a few years time

#2. Does the green blob get worse over time?

I'm debating on whether to get my TV fixed, or just live with the slightly annoying problem for as long as I can and then just buy a new TV down the road???? (Which obviously will NOT be a SONY). Their handling of this has likely cost them a customer for life.

I've read many hours on the subject and my research seems to indicated that the optical block WILL crap out again and it's likely going to quickly just get worse.

Can somebody kindly give me some input?

I had that problem when my TV set was almost new (~ 1 year old) and still under warranty and the Sony repair man came by to diagnose it. And it was just dust in the optical block. It took them around 45 minutes to open up the back of the TV, extract the optical block, clean it and put it back.

If you are lucky it could be just dust. My dust particle looks like round fuzzy green blob.

Now that I have seen how to dismantle the back the TV and pull out the optical block, I could do it myself again if needed. But there are a bunch of connectors to circuit board and fan to disconnect.

My repair guy said that without a doubt my problem was NOT dust in the optical block...so he didn't take anything apart.

So, if the TV is coming apart to fix, it's going to be me doing the work.

Wife and I have decided to just stick it out with this TV until it's too annoying to look past. Then we are going to buy a new TV. (won't be a Sony next time).
