So my buddy wants to record his game play on his 360. I don't record mine so I don't have a clue. I told him there might be a delay with a capture card and that I would ask you guys.
So is anyone recording their game play? What are you using?
Thanks

Forget a capture card the frame rate will just be piss poor and look like ass. just get a dvd recorder and than rip the videos onto your pc.

To much work? Are you to lazy to hit a button your remote?
I dont see how plugging the 360 into the dvd recorder inputs record your clip of gameplay and then hit the stop button..Put disc into PC rip using any software whether it be 1 click or windows movie maker for all I care...Its going to give better results and will end in less disappointment when you think you got a good game clip to show and look back on it and its choppy as hell because your PC was using resources elsewhere...A dvd recorder is a flawless and painless method which yields much better results...To many headaches with a capture card...

I use a simple video/audio splitter from Radio Shack. While I'm playing, my digital video camera records, then I take the camera to the PC and with Windows Movie Maker my kid and I edit the footage and are able to add stuff like music and credits. It's almost more fun than gaming in the first place. :)

Wait for Halo and use its record feature.

One thing you didn't mention is if your buddy plays in HD or not.
If he plays in SD anything will work....I'd recommend the Recordable DVD player set-top-box kinda thing, because then you have the new-age VCR :) Record TV, archive Skinemax Porn on Saturday nights, whatever floats your boat.
Run Svideo out from your Xbox into the recorder, and then from the recorder to the DVDR.
OR if your TV has a video OUTPUT jack, run whatever into the TV and then out from the TV to the recorder. Done.
But if he plays in HD then it becomes a bit more problematic.

Well he is playing with the HD cables. So he would need to go to the standard cables to record his game play.
I'll let him know his options.
Thanks guys.

It depends, do you want to play in HD or not? If you want to play in SD and record in SD it's a breeze, if you want to play in HD and record in SD, or play in HD and record in HD, it's going to be a headache.
I play in HD and record in SD using a Hava Wireless HD (like a slingbox except it can record, but the nice thing is it downconverts on the fly so you can still play in HD). It's around $200 and is far and away the cheapest option for any kind of recording while playing in HD.
I literally just got done researching this and setting it all up a week ago.
This post contains some videos I just made of Gears. I'm still learning all the encoding stuff and whatnot, the uncompressed stuff looks great on my PC but I've got to convert it down to this to post it.

(note that zshare is going to try and play the file as it loads so it will stutter like crazy the first time through. Let it go through once and then play it from the beginning and it will be smooth).

So with this device your 360 outputs go to this device then the tv?

Yes.
I currently have it set up as follows.
Video: Component from the 360 to the Hava, then component from the Hava to the TV. The Hava then streams to the PC via wireless or via ethernet.
Audio: Optical from the 360 to the receiver, and analog L/R from the 360 to the Hava. The 360 will then output 5.1 to the receiver, and stereo to the Hava for recording.
