I have the Pioneer, and I love it, and it has been a good friend of mine for quite a while. :)
But looking at the new non-Faroudja Oppo, I think I will gain the following:
a) Much better layer change
b) HDMI 1.2 for DSD transmission, and the ability to convert DSD to PCM for HDMI transmission if need be as well
Otherwise, if I compare Secret's tests for the older 970HD vs the 59AVi, it looks like a wash:
Pio 59AVi:
Failed
Chroma, 3-2 Alt. Flags
Chroma, 4:2:0 ICP
Oppo 970:
Failed:
Chroma, 4:2:0 ICP
3-2 Cadence, Mixed Flags
Bad Edit
With the caveat that I've head that the Mediatek chip in the new 980H has been "customized" by Oppo, which I take that to mean that it possibly does do better than the 970HD on these tests.
Anyway, can ayone think of a reason why I *shouldn't* do this? I know that I might take a hit on analog audio out of the player, but if I use HDMI to a pre/pro, that becomes a non-issue. I'd also expect the Oppo to do at least as well as the Pioneer in the upscaling dept.
